K9 Dental Diets || Pet owners don't often realize that dental diets are formulated for all dogs. IF IT SMELLS LIKE A "vet clinic" YOU ARE NOT CLEANING ENOUGH || Our team spends A LOT of time cleaning, as much of a pain that it seems to be, thorough cleaning and disinfecting is an integral part of our BIOSECURITY PLAN. It helps keep our patients ( both large or small) and our team safe. EQUINE INFLUENZA || Just a friendly heads up Equine Influenza A has been DIAGNOSED in our practice area. It is a HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS viral respiratory disease. If you have any questions or concerns, talk to your veterinarian. The linked article does a great job explaining the disease, and prevention. Some of the main take-aways: 1. Coughing horses can aerosolize the organism up to 150ft. 2. Throat and lung tissue can take 3 weeks to regenerate - putting horses at risk for bacte...rial infection. 3. Give 1 week of rest for every day of fever. 4. Severely affected horses can be out of work for 6 months. 5. Work with your veterinarian for best treatment options if your horse is sick. https://ceh.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/health-/equine-influenza-flu

STILL BOOKING SMALL ANIMAL || Yes bovine fall season is upon us, and our vets will be spending much more time out of the clinic. With the addition of Dr. Henderson working full-time, we will still be able to accomodate many wellness/vaccine and sick pet appointments through the fall. We will be pausing the surgery schedule until late November, (we still do have a few spots left for the begining of October). If you would like on the wait list for December, call the clinic to be put on the list. #creeksideveterinaryservice #preparingforfall #companionanimalveterinarian

Castration Band Adhesions in Steers || In areas where producers castrate with a knife at branding, the tension required for vasoconstriction, can sometimes cause the cord to snap back into the abdomen and adhere to other structures (this method is different than castration done with emasculators, as they can prevent bleeding without tension on the cord). We always see a few steers in the fall (once they get onto feed) that present with symptoms of colic, or an inability to pa...ss feces. Sometimes we are able to break down the adhesion when palpating rectally, other times, surgery is required. We took the opportunity to photograph Traci performing surgery last week on one. Traci did not believe that these were a thing before moving to Maple Creek, but she is now a pro at diagnosing, and correcting them ( did she jinx herself??). #creeksideveterinaryservice #gutsurgery #bovineveterinarian #bovinesurgeon

EQUINE VETERINARY DENTISTRY || This yearling was brought in from pasture with a swelling on his jaw. His owner suspected it was an issue with a tooth. Upon presentation to the clinic: 1. An appropriate injectable sedation was used. 2. When the broken tooth was found, a local anesthetic was given. 3. The broken tooth was extracted. 4. X-ray was used to ensure all broken fragments were removed.... 5. The horse was discharged with appropriate take-home antibiotics and pain control. 6. If the owners have any questions, or the infection doesn't get better quickly, our veterinarians are readily available for follow up care. *picture of the removed tooth in the comments* #creeksideveterinaryservice #equineveterinarydentistry #saskatchewanveterinarymedicalassociation

Toothache Tuesday || This little lady came for a visit yesterday, and went home with a nice new set of braces! As you can see in the radiographs, she broke her incisive bone, and needed her teeth and bones stabilized with wire. She went home on antibiotics and pain control, we will see her back in 4 weeks for recheck and wire removal. As random as this injury may seem, it is not the first wire set of braces Luke has had to install on a young horse. #creeksideveterinaryservice #veterinarydentistry #equineveterinarian

CREEKSIDE IS CURBSIDE || With the new guidelines announced yesterday, and the changing of our clinic season from on-farm work to more in-clinic work, we thought it was a good time to review some of the procedures that we have implemented for quite sometime. Since our building is quite small, it is very hard to social distance. This has forced us to create a few rules to help limit traffic through the building, and allow us to sanitize not only between animals (which we always do), but also our front counters, debit machine etc.

MEET THE TEAM MONDAY || Luke Runnion, DVM - Luke is a 2012 graduate of Washington State University, upon graduation he spent several years in rural mixed animal practice in Saskatchewan, before moving back to Montana to practice at an equine sports medicine and surgical referral center. It was here that he was able to refine his knowledge and skills pertaining to equine medicine. Missing the variety that mixed animal practice provides, and a desire to raise his family rurally, Luke opened Creekside Veterinary Service the summer of 2018. You will find Luke on-farm most of the year, pregnanc and semen testing, or at the clinic working on horses, and companion animal medicine cases. #creeksideveterinaruservice #meettheteammonday #teamworkmakesthedreamwork

FALL FOAL VACCINATIONS || Don’t leave your foal exposed! The fall is a period in which the antibodies foals receive from their dams run out, and for optimum immunity, this is the time period in which their own vaccinations should be started. In Western Canada, babies born in early spring will be at risk for West Nile Virus in late summer. All foals will be at risk for contracting Tetanus if they get a cut, scratch, or other wound in the fall or winter. The winter is a time when you often have them in on hay, and are working with them regularly to get them halter broke, and handleable. Which means it is a great time to do their foal vaccination series and start them on a nutrition program to support this time of rapid growth and development. #creeksideveterinaryservice #foalvaccinations #equineveterinarian #saskvet #albertavet

Concerned About Equine Parasites? The article below has plenty of good information regarding several variables that play a role in management of parasites in horses. It isn't a short read, but dives into the parasite-host relationship, resistance to dewormer, how climate factors into a management strategy, and using fecal egg counts to drive deworming decisions. If you have any questions about deworming protocols, or want to discuss setting up a program for your herd, do not hesitate to call. https://thehorse.com/features/equine-internal-parasites/

Most breeding contracts include that your mare must be vaccinated with EHV-1 found in the Pneumabort-K vaccine at the frequency recommended by your veterinarian as part of the live foal guarantee. BOVINE PREGNANCY DIAGNOSIS BY ULTRASOUND || Most of the "added value" with the ultrasound is found in early gestation, however if the introducer (wand) is used it is easier on the animal (especially heifers) than traditional palpation at all stages of gestation. The introducer is invaluable to our veterinarians as it helps reduce the wear and tear on their arms and shoulders, allowing them to test a high volume of cattle year after year. #creeksideveterinaryservice #pregtest2020 #bovineveterinarian

JUST A FRIENDLY REMINDER || If you are going to need a pregnancy diagnosis letter for a sale this fall, please let us know well in advance. Not that our office staff doesn’t appreciate the challenge and adrenaline rush the morning of the sale, feverishly typing a letter, saving it as a PDF and emailing out to the veterinarian on farm for them to remotely sign on their phone, save and email back to the clinic to then be forwarded onto the sale ring, but if you know this area, catching them while they still have enough cell phone service to use the marvels of modern technology is a feat in itself. #creeksideveterinaryservice #callearly #nolastminuterush #pregtest2020

NOVEMBER means PNEUMABORT-K || It is recommended that all pregnant mares receive a Pneumabort-K vaccine at 5, 7 and 9mo of gestation to help protect them against the EHV strains that cause abortion ( double check the live foal guarentee, it could depend on vaccination). In Western Canada, most mares that will foal outside, will reach 5 months gestation during the month of November. #creeksideveterinaryservice #equineveterinarian #maplecreek #timetovaccinate #foaling2021

TURN YOUR HEATERS ON || With a weather change and snowfall in the forecast, it is time again to make sure trough heaters are plugged in and working. Horses are more likely to colic during a weather change than anyother time of the year. Making sure their water stays open, and they are penned close to a water source ( less wading through deep snow to get to it), will help reduce the chances of an impaction colic ( snow consumption is not sufficient). Colic is an emergency, and needs to be treated as one. #creeksideveterinaryservice #snowstorm #beprepared #equineveterinarian #saskatchewanveterinarian #albertaveterinarian

SECURING HAY FOR THIS WINTER || It is that time of year again - where you are either busy in the field putting up hay, or scouring the sale ads looking for hay to buy for this winter. Make sure that you check your hay for coarse weeds and fox tail as they can cause problems in both horses and cows. It also doesn't hurt to keep an eye on the bale feeder in the winter and remove any patches of fox tail, as they sometimes pop up in the round bale. This horse got into a section of fox tail in their round bale, and its owners noticed excessive salivation, prompting them to bring it in for closer examination. We removed as much of the fox tail stuck in its cheeks, tongue and lips, and sent it home with a course of antibiotics and pain control. #creeksideveterinaryservice #checkyourhay #haying2020 #whatishorsehayanyway
