I grew up in southern Idaho. In university I studied piano, voice and composition, but I also found a really special choral community there and fell in love wi...th that. So when I was faced with the decision to pursue more education and realized I couldn’t just study everything, I found conducting to be a place where all of those things came together. My undergraduate mentor and choral director, Marc Hafso, was someone who modelled an empathic leadership style and really focused on building community. I valued the role model that he was, and the way I saw him create a space for so many young people to find themselves in and feel safe in. I think I just felt drawn to what I saw him doing, and wanted to be a part of that. So I came to UBC, to do my masters in choral conducting there. As I finished UBC and no longer had access to all these ensembles to conduct, I really wanted to start my own. So, Aurora was the brainchild of seeing all these talented choral singers coming out of UBC, but there not necessarily being a place specifically for them in the choral community. So I wanted to create a community that was inexpensive and that ticked all the boxes for this age group, so they could continue to sing with people that are sharing the same walk of life. This is currently my second season with intima. There are beautiful things about being both a collaborator and a leader, and I think that’s something that’s super cool about intima. Everyone’s filling different shoes, always. Last Monday I was driving into rehearsal and thinking, man, how lucky am I right now to be singing, period. And then to be joining with a group of people to be creating beautiful music, sharing stories, expressing the range of human experience through poetry and music... I think that’s such a therapeutic thing for us and for listeners, and I was feeling incredibly grateful to be able to do that. Particularly with a community of people who are empathetic and caring and warm and supportive. Because, you know, right notes and rhythms and tone are great, but if that’s without heart, then it’sI don’t want to say worthlessbut it definitely doesn’t carry the same value."
