07/19 - Village of Radium Hot Springs: A cougar was hunting for bighorn sheep near the entryway to KNP yesterday evening. A sheep carcass was left near the hi...ghway last night; the sheep has since been removed. Please be advised that the cougar may return this evening to search for its food cache. Residents and visitors who may be out walking near dark in this area are advised to walk in groups of 2 (or more if possible) and keep small children or pets close by if. Cougar attacks on humans are very rare and there is no reason to believe this cougar would view humans as prey, but please be aware of your surroundings and report any cougar or dead sheep sightings to the RAPP line: 1-877-952-7277. A black bear alert has been issued for the Redstreak Campground area. Local businesses in Radium are requested to be extra diligent with locking dumpsters overnight and securing grease traps, recycling, and other bear attractants. Residents are requested to keep all garbage and recycling indoors. If this bear wanders down into town, let's not invite it to stay for an unhealthy garbage snack. If you see a black bear or grizzly bear in town, please report the sighting to the RAPP line: 1-877-952-7277. Help keep wildlife wild, and our community safe!

#DYK? Abundant berry crops that grow after a fire are an important food source for grizzly bears. Fires help to open up the forest, allowing light to reach th...e forest floor and increase the amount of berries produced. Grizzly bears can eat an incredible 200,000 berries a day! Research conducted in Banff and Yoho National Parks show that bears strongly favour burned areas. Based on these findings Parks Canada uses prescribed fires to naturally restore and maintain grizzly bear habitat in Kootenay National Park. #FireScienceSunday Learn more about fire and vegetation management in the mountain national parks: www.parkscanada.gc.ca/mountain-fire
