Ag Fact Friday: Feeding cows in the evening, instead of in the morning, will cause the majority of calves to be born during daylight hours. Not everybody does ...it, but it works. Research done at Kansas State University over a five year period, involving 537 births, documented 85.4% of calves born between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., when cows were fed in the evening (between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.). Many studies have been done over the years, with similar results. Nobody knows why it works, only that it does. Why do we care when calves are born? We care because difficult births are more likely to be detected, and assistance provided, during daylight hours.

So a very talented craftsman Ed Trembley agreed to build an old farm style table, from scratch for the store with the help of my brother Brian. Imagine my surprise when this beauty arrived! It became a family heirloom right then and there.

We just got in some winter range mineral both medicated and non medicated. Also got some pasture mineral for an all-round blend along with Sheep pasture mineral.

This is my ranch horse. He’s a 5 year old I showed at the cow horse futurities as a 3 year old. Made him a NRCHA money earner, but most of all he was just my ra...nch horse. He was pretty green and won his first check with only 4 months training. When I bought him, I took him home to the ranch, rode him in the round pen and worked the kinks out for a few minutes, swung the gate and lit a shuck. He was a weavin and a wobblin through the brush but after a steep hill and a little air out of his lungs he went to swinging them Herman Oak splits and was coverin country. Miles n miles of fence checked. That’s part of bein a ranch horse. The first time I ever swung a rope on him was at a brandin. He was pretty watchy of the loop at first, the first calf I heeled and drug to the fire he was tight tailed and scared to death of the ground crew, ( the playgun and little Peppy blood is a bit too close and thick for him to be gentle). But after about a dozen he settled in and went to work. I bet I drug 500 calves on him that spring, just doin ranch work. That’s what makes a ranch horse. After spring works we’re done and summer come I went to work on his cuttin and reinin and still rode him on the ranch and in the mountains checkin cows throughout the warm months. It made a fine toned athlete out of him but most of all he was just a ranch horse. When the fall futurities were over I started heeling steers in him. He did it like it was just another day at the office. I won my first check on him that winter in Arizona, he was just turnin 4. I won my next check on him in Billings Montana. Everyone compliments him everywhere he goes. And as much as I love to rope on him, he’s still just my ranch horse. I’ve run down cattle in wide open spaces and roped and doctored them all alone on this gelding. I’ve hunted elk and hauled him from Montana to Texas and everywhere in between. I’ve won buckles and saddles and near 50,000 on him. He worked his heart out for me at the USTRC finals. He’s been there for me as I turned back for 76 point runs in Will Rogers Coliseum and been to countless weekend cuttings and settled cattle and helped so many, but he’s still just my ranch horse. He’s gave lessons for people to cut on and I patterned him on the barrels in 15 minutes and I’ve roped hundreds of colts on him, but most of all he’s my ranch horse. He was there at the Lone Star and helped me win big on the 4th of July weekend, he’s walked along side nervous barrel horses in the alley to calm them down. I’ve gathered cattle in hundred degree heat and freezing blizzards on him. That’s what it takes to make a ranch horse. He’s good to shoe and has a fast walk and an easy short lope. He’ll stop a cow dead in her tracks and never ever stumbles. He’ll cinch up right with a few days off, but that’s ok. It keeps him here. I’ve never had a horse so many wanted to buy. And yet if they all had him he’d scare em to death. He’s been a show horse a turn back horse and my number one heel horse, but most of all he’s just my ranch horse. It takes thousands of acres and thousands of cattle to make a ranch horse. Out here, you’ll find the difference. I’ve owned a lot of em in my day, literally thousands, but this one will stick around a while. Mostly cause I like him, and because mostly, he’s a ranch horse. See more
