R.I.P. Butch Stewart, Founder and Chairman of the well known Sandals & Beaches Resort chain (ATL Group of Companies) & Chairman of the Jamaica Observer. I can't believe this vibrant personality is now gone. I had the pleasure of meeting him 4 years ago at a travel conference and despite being so well-established, he was one of the most humble individuals I've ever met. Giving credit where it is due and always thinking one step ahead with his innovative mindset, he will truly ...be missed by many. Despite being a newbie in the travel industry at that time, he still gave me the time of day for a conversation, something not done frequently in any business. I will never forget his compassion and drive to make the tourism industry better each day. He was picky with the locations he chose to open new resorts and stuck true to his philosophy of giving back the Caribbean communities he became a part of. He had many chances to expand to other parts of the world but knew that wasn't his brand and always saw something special in the Caribbean, which became his home. My heartfelt condolences to the entire family, friends and colleagues of Mr. Stewart, who I know will be grieving this great man for some time. This year has been rough for many on both a personal and professional level. With Christmas season in tow however, it gives us all a wonderful reminder of appreciation for one another. Putting up our Christmas tree has become a tradition for hubby and I. I do the decorating and he serves me hot chocolate while he admires my creativeness for the year and helps me untangle all the decorations. With everything happening outside, it's great to be able to spend time with your lo...ved ones upholding the traditions you've built over the years. Karwa Chauth is considered to be a romantic festival, symbolizing the love between husband and wife. Married women wake up early and eat what is called Sargi (breakfast prepared in hopes that the wives will fast wholeheartedly for their husbands) prepared by their mother in laws before sunrise. They have their last sip of water before sunrise and then endure a day long fast without any food or drink. It is observed by ladies of the household/neighborhood together and they ce...lebrate by narrating folk tales, reading the Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha (story of the origins of Karwa Chauth) and singing folk songs. Women worship Lord Ganesh in the month of Kartika followed by the Goddess Parvati and her husband, Lord Shiva, with hopes of having a loving and nurturing marriage/family like theirs and also for the long life of their respective husband's. As the evening approaches, wives get decked up to look like Brides and get ready to break their fast with Purnima (the full moon) alongside their husband's. After spotting the full moon, women hold a chalni (sifter) with diya (ceremonial light) and offer sugar water, rice, sweets and fruits to the moon along with aartee (ceremonial light) while praying for their husbands repeating a special prayer for a total of 5 times. She then uses the Chalni to look at the moon followed by looking at her husband, to sift out all the negative energies and only give positive prayers and blessings to him. The husband then offers his wife her first sip of water for the day along with a bite of something sweet to keep their marriage sweet. Traditionally the husband would also shower the wife with gifts as a thank you for caring about his well-being, but I personally don't believe in this as I believe you should do it wholeheartedly without any expectation in return. Some husband's today also keep the vrat for their wives well being. Women also get mehndi done in advance in hopes of a dark stain which they say means your husband/mother in law love you a lot. This year due to covid, I ended up doing the mehendi myself for my in-laws and my one hand. My hubby did my right hand for me as I wasn't able to and that's true love right there!
