Show of hands ...do you understand 2D blueprints when you look at them? Or do you need 3D to visualize. Not everyone can picture how an architectural drawing will come to life. It takes a trained eye to see in 3D. Luckily technology is crazy awesome these days and we can produce 3D drawings! Crazy times I tell ya. Side note: If you are building a new home or renovating, I can review your blueprints with you and help you understand them and make suggestions for changes if needed. Food for thought. Morning! Let’s talk about quartz and granite countertops for a sec... Quartz is my go to for countertops. It is stain resistant, maintenance free, durable and food safe. The color options are endless with so many brands creating their own looks. There is also a wide range of price points. It is an engineered product created out of real natural stone and mixed with a resin to create the most perfect designs. It is non porous, extremely hard, almost invisible seams, lar...ge slabs, and is covered under warranty. Granite is gorgeous as well. The color selection is a bit limited but is one of a kind. It is an all natural product, therefore, it is actually porous and requires a sealer. In fact the lighter the color the more porous it is making it more susceptible to stains and chipping. Not a big deal as it’s still a great product but something to consider. If granite is what you are after you will have to take a trip to the city to a quarry to pick out your own slab, it’s kinda cool actually! Since it’s a natural stone, there are no samples really and each piece is unique. If it’s quartz your wanting, there are so many samples and as a designer this definitely makes it easier on us for creating a space. FYI I offer free quartz and granite quotes whether you are building or renovating. I also have books and books of samples too with many different brands if you need me to swing by for a consult. So what is a mood board anyway? And do I need one if I’m building or renovating? Firstly yes, yes you do...well maybe not ‘need’ but it sure helps! I mean you wouldn’t tell a hairdresser to do whatever they want before your hair cut (insert photo of me in the 90’s with horrendous chopped off hair before we had iPhones to show inspiration pics). You want a visual first. . A mood board is a visual presentation of a collage of images with the exact products and materials that... are being used in your project. It’s an amazing way to visualize the design as a whole before starting. A mood board can also be a concept design that gives a general idea for what your project will feel like (before actually selecting anything specific). . Why they’re great: -clarifies your vision -keeps you on track, (Pinterest people,cough cough)there are just too many ideas out there that sidetrack us...I too am guilty -prevents impulse buys of products that don’t flow (we’ve all been there buying a random thing in the clearance section) -helps visualize the entire design as a whole before committing -a way to remember everything you’ve picked out, since projects can take months and months -keeps your builder and trades in the loop so everyone is on the same page -gives you something to share with people dying to know what your house will look like (or not if you don’t want a million opinions) . Ok so it’s been a while since I posted, (sorry my bad!). Here’s what I’ve been up to- I’ve been mainly working just 2 days a week now for the summer (due to childcare and the world ending blah blah blah) and then enjoying summer and my kids on my days off. I’m still alive, still working, still doing diy’s and random projects which I will do better at sharing with you. I’m finding on the days I’m working I go hard and leave social media in the dust, plus I don’t actually get... paid for sitting on Instagram lol. Also been at the lake lots (ministikwan) with NO cell service . What is everyone else up to? Anywho- my closet shelving project is finally done . Also I promised you guys a review on the @benjaminmoore scuff-x paint I used on the shelves. I like it, it wipes so easily and when I got a few scuffs filling the shelves, the scuffs wiped right off. Ok so it’s not the best after picture since it’s not decorated yet, and I couldn’t get the right lighting...but wanted you to see the difference from before! (Swipe to check it out). It looks unreal in person I swear. It was my DIY ceiling project. I went from a textured to a flat ceiling in a few tricky but totally doable steps. See my highlights for details. I did this technique in 2 rooms and plan to do more! I started small in case it didn’t turn out, but it did .... I was told by a few it would be a nightmare to do if it can even be done and it would be easier to skim coat over it, which is probably true but that would have cost us a lot and we likely would have just painted it and been stuck with it forever. I mean definitely hire those services if you don’t love to diy. For me I thought, why not try! And guess what it can be done fairly easily and for next to no cost at all other than paint and your time. (I had most of the supplies lying around already). If you’re ambitious and hate your ceiling, this is an awesome way to update your home. It feels so much lighter and brighter, I love it!
