November is Vitamin D awareness month! . Vitamin D is made naturally in the skin when there is exposure to sunlight. In the coming months, Vancouverites will experience shorter days and cloudy skies, as is typical of winters north of the 49th parallel. These dark days prevent humans from synthesizing enough Vitamin D and will make vitamin D deficiency inevitable. . Vitamin D is essential for:... . Immune Activity Bone Strength Muscle Activity Mood Balance Cancer Risks Inflammation Control Cardiovascular Regulation Diabetes Management Weight Loss . Extreme deficiency of Vitamin D can include bone disorders such as rickets and osteoporosis, as well as a lowered immune system and regular illness. Low levels of Vitamin D have also been associated with Seasonal Affective Disorder/Seasonal Depression, a growing matter amongst North Americans. . There is varied evidence regarding the ideal vitamin D blood levels as well as differing opinions regarding the minimal daily dose individuals should supplement with. The Vitamin D Council advises a minimum acceptable blood level of 50 ng/ml, while in Naturopathic Medicine, the ideal levels range from 80 to 120 ng/ml for health benefits. . Canada's northern latitudes mean natural vitamin D production outdoors is very limited from October through to April, and in some cases can stretch longer in northern parts of the country. Health food stores do sell Vitamin D supplements in 500 to 1000IU doses, but the best way to address your vitamin D is to get it measured with a blood test to find out exactly where you fall in the range and supplement as directed by your Naturopathic Physician. . . Book in and I will get you tested at the clinic! . Dr. Sanjay Mohan Ram, N.D. THE STORY OF LUPUS AND YOUR DIGESTIVE TRACT . The disease systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), marked by the attack on joints, skin, and kidneys by the body’s immune system, is linked to an abnormal mix of bacteria in the gut according to a new study led by scientists at NYU School of Medicine. . While bacterial imbalances have been tied to many immune-related diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, and some cancers, the current study is the first detailed ...evidence of a link between bacterial imbalances in the gut and potentially life-threatening forms of SLE. . The new study, publishing in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases, showed that 61 women diagnosed with SLE had roughly five times more gut bacteria known as Ruminococcus gnavus, than 17 women of similar ages and racial backgrounds who did not have the disease and were healthy. . The study strongly suggests that in some patients, bacterial imbalances may be driving lupus and its associated disease flares. The results point to leakages of bacteria from the gut as a possible immune system trigger of the disease, and suggest that the internal gut environment may therefore play a more critical role than genetics in renal flares of this disease. . Antibodies to R. gnavus can cause a continuous and unrelenting immune attack on organs during flare ups. As such, simple stool tests to detect antibodies to the leaked bacterial strains could be used to help diagnose and track the progression of lupus and other autoimmune conditions. . At the clinic, I can order a stool test to check for any and all types of antibodies. Let’s get you booked in. . Dr. Sanjay Mohan Ram, N.D. . GUT BACTERIA AND BRAIN HEALTH . Perhaps one of the most compelling, and little understood, areas of gut microbiome science is the strange relationship between gut bacteria and mental health. Researchers are rapidly uncovering new insights into the gut-brain connection, discovering potential microbiome influences on everything from PTSD to brain inflammation. . A new study has revealed an intriguing association between low levels of specific bacteria and increased rates of de...pression. Utilizing data from the large and ongoing Flemish Gut Flora Project, the researchers assessed the association between fecal microbiome and diagnosed clinical depression. . The results found two specific bacteria significantly stood out as being consistently seen in low levels among subjects suffering from depression. Coprococcus and Dialister - increased levels of the bacteria were strongly associated with higher quality of life indicators. Another bacteria known as Bacteroides was found to be more prevalent in depressed subjects and previously been associated with the inflammatory bowel condition Crohn's disease. . If you are wondering how your digestive tract is affecting your mood, let’s book you into the clinic and get you tested. Based on the results, I can then figure out an individualized treatment plan for you. . Dr. Sanjay Mohan Ram, N.D. Why do I strongly advise every single one of my patients to get a food sensitivity blood test completed? Here’s why! . . A study published in February 2019 in the Journal of the American Medical Association reinforces an emerging area in diet science that suggests the best way to manage nutritional health is to build personalized diets. . ... . For many years, people have pursued the idea of building diets based on the nutritional compositions of the foods they eat. Examples of this would be the paleolithic diet or the ketogenic diet. No one is saying that these diets are wrong, but I am saying that it needs tweaking. . . Just think about the Canadian government’s food pyramid, which suggested daily servings of meats, vegetables, fruits, and grains to maintain good health. . . As nutrition science and technology have advanced, we have more insight into what’s happening on a chemical level inside our bodies. Some scientists, dietitians, and food companies are beginning to shift focus away from the general properties of specific foods, and towards how our individual bodies process them. . . With Food Sensitivity testing, it is a dieting method that treats each human body less as a template, and more as a highly unique ecosystem. . . Ultimately, there is no one-size-fits-all diet you need to do your Food Sensitivity Testing. Let’s get you into the clinic and I’ll get your testing completed. . . Dr. Sanjay Mohan Ram, N.D. . . 10 TIPS TO STAY LEAN AFTER THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS! 1) Workout first thing in the morning before you start your day. Then, you will have no excuse later in the day. . 2) Be more active - choose to walk or ride a bicycle or swim as much as possible, swimming is one of the highest calorie burning activities you can do.... . 3) Focus all your meals around a good source of protein and healthy fats. This will help maintain muscle. Protein and fats have the highest thermic effect of food which allows you to burn more calories digesting it. . 4) Consider getting sorbet ice cream if you do have dessert. They are usually very low in calories compared to fancy Italian gelato. . 5) Eat foods high in fiber for breakfast and this will keep you feeling full all day long. . 6) Never have 2 cheat meals in a row. For example, if you have pasta for one meal, make sure the next meal is something that is healthy, such as lean fish and vegetables. . 7) Ask for the dressing or sauce on the side when you order food at a restaurant - you can add the right amount you want as you eat. . 8) Drink water based on your body weight throughout the day. The more water you drink, the less likely you will consume large calorie meals. . 9) Drink zero calorie drinks. For example, drinks with stevia will help with sweet cravings and do not contain calories which can cause weight gain. . 10) I should trade mark this last advice I say it to patients all the time, If you are going to cheat, cheat well. Do not cheat with junk foods with artificial or junk ingredients. Cheat with food that feeds your soul and your belly foods that are decadent and worth the calories. Follow the 80-20 rule or the 6 days on, 1 day off rule. . People gain weight when they go on holidays or travel because there are so many different food choices and options.
