Back in 2012, I wanted the Croatian Library's digitization project to build an audio-e-reader application like the Amazon Immersion reading app that's built into the e-reader Fire Tablet: it has an audio voice-over feature for your reading experience. The project requires native Croatian readers to record themselves reading Croatian books in the public domain (that means that no copyright is in force anymore.)... What do you think about Amazon's Fire Tablet immersion reading feature vs their new Audible Captions mobile audio book app version? Watch this video about the Audible Captions app to understand the idea better: https://youtu.be/gigFk-8VkKs

The Croatian-Canadian Library will have a new board of directors soon who will plot the future course of the library and where it will make its collection available. It was a pleasure serving the community since 2012. Best of luck to the incoming board. David Michaels

Many Croatians moved to the United States between the 1600s and 1924. It was the destination of choice for Croatians in the Americas. After 1924, many Croatians went to Canada instead of the USA, even though they had relatives in the USA. Why would they choose Canada? Immigration to the US was effectively closed to southern and central European people, including Jews with the passage of the JohnsonReed Act in 1924. ... This legislation put in a quota on such immigrants (i.e. the annual limit was set at 2% of the population of the ethnic group in the 1910 census, so if there were 100,000 of a group, only 2,000 could come in each year). This effectively shifted immigration from southern Europe to northern Europe as there were far more northern Europeans already established in the United States. The "you're not white enough Act" was fueled by prejudice - "those" people are too different; "those" people are taking our jobs; "those" people are too Catholic; "those" people are Jewish; "those" people could be communists; "those" people are too alien to American culture. In 1914, upwards of 20% of the Croatian community in Canada was taken prisoner by Canadian authorities and thrown into concentration camps. Why? Because they were Austro-Hungarian citizens and Canada was at war with Austria-Hungary. Even though most Croats arrived in Canada gladly leaving their former empire behind, Canadian authorities, reacted to xenophobia and imprisoned large number of Ukrainians, Croats, Poles, Jews, Serbs, Slovaks, Romanians, etc. Their property was taken and NEVER returned nor were they given compensation for their losses. In addition, community halls, including at least one Croatian hall were seized by the government. Xenophobia - "those" people are a threat; "those" people could start insurrection in our country; "those" people are taking our jobs; "those" people are too different from our British way of life, led to such decisions. In some cases, these prisoners were not released until almost 2 years after WW1 ended. Fast forward 100 years later, when we hear rhetoric that is racist and bigoted, we need to be vigilant. It was wrong back then and is wrong today!

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Ivica Puhalo. Founder of the Croatian-Canadian Library. Our sympathy and prayers go out to his family and friends. In 2000, Mr. Puhalo had an idea. He envisioned a place where Croatian culture could be preserved through the creation of a permanent home for a collection of Croatian-language books. With that concept, the Library was born. I know I speak for everyone in the library board when I say that we are enormously grateful for all that he has contributed to the Croatian community. He was a hard working person, with a very generous spirit. And he will be missed. -Anton Sardelic, Managing Director of The Croatian-Canadian Library
