Last week, we kept Valentines Day and Family Day love going with "Kindness Week!" The Junior School has been full of colour, friendship, smiles and laughter as they worked together on school-wide cooperative art projects. At the same time, students themselves become works of art with soda bottle hair accessories, more scrunchies and hair clips than you can count, fluffy onesies in every colour of the rainbow. Thank you to CHS staff and students for the positive messages scattered around campus, and your heartfelt displays of kindness. #CHSstudents

For seven years a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This, however, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs...who just happened to be there too. A tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world but works hard to remain loyal and true despite all odds. This clever, hilarious and heartfelt play gives a new look at a familiar ‘Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic’ with a winking fondness for all things Harry! The livestream shows of this Senior School performance take place on March 4 and 5 at 7:00 pm. Check your email for links to tickets or visit the "What's Happening" section at www.croftonhouse.ca/parents

Rosa Parks was born this day in 1913. She would become known as the "Mother of the Civil Rights Movement" because of her pivotal role in the Montgomery bus boycott. February is also Black History Month, with the theme "The Future is Now." Now more than ever is the time to consider the realities of Black Canadians in our communities and across the school, ongoing education and discussion is happening in classrooms, clubs, and hallways. To keep learning, our library team has also put together a selection of books to help amplify these stories and voices. #blackhistorymonth #rosaparks #civilrights

Today is Women's Sports Foundation National Girls & Women in Sports Day, inspiring girls and women to play and be active for mental and physical health. Athletics means a lot to our students and we're glad to have found ways to keep girls in play. Don't take our word for it -- let's hear from some CHS students: "Your muscles get sore in the middle but you need to keep going! And at the end you feel so accomplished!" said Gwyneth, Grade 5 "I love how if you have the right tea...m, you can basically do anything, said Nicky, Grade 7 "It’s just you and the ball. It comes over the net, and you’re so ready. It is just a great feeling when your instincts kick in, said Makenna, Grade 8 "The thing that drew me in was my teammates, and I like to help create an opportunity for them to score," said Jane, Grade 9 #NGWSD #LeadHerForward

It's amazing what you can do with a fingerprint and a little paint. Junior school students from Grades 1-7 explored some "handmade" ideas on the theme #beyourself while enhancing their fine motor skills!

Grade 3 students had plenty of ooey-gooey fun in Science Club this week, playing with Ooblek, a non-newtonian fluid made from simple household ingredients. Want to try this at home? Two parts cornstarch and 1 part water are all you need. Food colouring optional! #CHSstudents

Crofton House School 19.12.2020

For a taste of chemistry, the Grade 5 Science Club experimented with "Magic Milk" this week with creative, colourful results! Try this at home! You'll need full-fat milk, food colouring, Dawn dish soap, and cotton swabs. Put the milk in a shallow pan, then add some food-colouring drops. Dip your cotton swab in the dish soap, and gently touch it to your milk pan to see the magic!

The first "Community Edition" 1898 newsletter went out this week to celebrate the 2020 Career Conference. To help them consider their next steps and career paths, 205 Grade 11 and 12 students spent an incredible afternoon hearing from 32 alumnae, parents of current and past students, and community connections. We thank all those who generously volunteered for their time and passion! Learn more at https://bit.ly/2JudLHI.

Students in Grade 10, 11, and 12 learned the art of 'paint pouring' this week at Studio 65. They explored methods such as using a funnel or colander, as well as free pour methods called the "Tree Ring" and "Puddle Pour". This abstract type of art features endless possibilities and unique discoveries.

You know Winter Bazaar as a campus-overflowing extravaganza, but did you know its roots go all the way back to the 1940s? We wish we were flinging open the gates this weekend, but we did have a chance to open the archives to give you a look back at Bazaars past. Please check out the link in our bio!

Today would be the annual Winter Bazaarone of the most-anticipated events we have on campus. We want to thank everyone who worked creatively and courageously to make sure the CHS community could still participate in some of the Bazaar’s traditions like craft-making or hanging a decorative wreath, all in support of @kidsafeproject. We also want to thank the greater community who comes out to the Bazaar year after year to share in these traditions with us. We look forward to a time when we can welcome families to campus again.

Look at them go! Just because we can't meet doesn't mean we can't compete. The Junior School cross-country athletes took over campus today for a race against the clock - The Falcon Run. Plenty of #falconpride was on display as classmates and teammates cheered them on through 1, 2 and 3km courses. Congratulations, runners! And thank you to all the staff and coaches who made today possible!

CHS students in Grade 6, 7 and 10 had the chance to participate in @civix_canada's #studentvote for an introduction to the practical side of democracy: casting a ballot! With this hands-on program, they learn about the democratic process, research candidates and party platforms, debate the future of B.C. and cast ballots for the official candidates running in Crofton House School's electoral district. Their ballots are collected and counted so results can be compared to the real ones after polls close on Saturday, Oct 24 2020. If you're eligible to vote, don't forget to head to the polls! Thank you CIVIX for helping to build students into citizens! #bcpoli #ivotebc #CHSStudents

Grade 2s went out to clear the catch basin covers they've adopted through the @cityofvancouver -- named Autumn Drain CHS and Mr Drainy -- to clear the leaves and debris that would allow the rainwater to freely flow where it needs to go. New teachers were "knighted" and officially welcomed to Crofton House School after a grilling by Grade 12s that included skill-testing and personality-assessing questions from most-embarrassing moments, to knowledge of current slang. Their answers were "fire" and they weren't even "shook," even when asked to don crowns and signage that can only be described as "extra." In seriousness, we're proud of our entire school community and happy to see our new faces welcomed by our students.

October 5 is #WorldTeachersDay, and this year, we are more grateful than ever to the educators at Crofton House School. Teachers teach, and they also learn. In 2020, they've learned how to move their lessons online. They've learned how to support students with mindfulness. And they've learned every new rule, protocol and procedure to keep everyone as safe as possible, back in the classroom. If you see a teacher, please thank a teacher. And if you're a teacher, we thank you. #LearningNeverStops #CHSFaculty

We join schools across the country on Orange Shirt Day in the spirit of reconciliation and hope because every child matters. Our theme of Healing through Listening led us to spend time sharing the stories of indigenous children who survived the horrors of residential schools. This included Phyllis Webstad’s The Orange Shirt Story that tells of her experience, and the root of the movement she began. Students engaged with questions, anger, and sorrow over Phyllis and the children that came before and after her. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3jePFNX #orangeshirtday #everychildmatters #CHSstudents
