Easy for God The battles of the Bible make me laugh. Just when I’m expecting some Saving Private Ryan/Braveheart/Lord of the Rings epic conflict, God shows up and ruins it. Like in Judges chapter 4. Sisera, a sex-trafficking thug who murders and enslaves the people of Israel, shows up with nine hundred iron chariots. Chariots were like ancient tanks, and iron chariots would have destroyed Israel’s brittle bronze swords. In other words, Israel stands no chance.... Until God shows up. After 14 nail-biting verses, Judges 4:15 says, The Lord routed Sisera and all his chariots. Oh! One verse, one verb, one Lord and the battle is won. Nine hundred chariots are nothing for God. That’s good news for you. You might be facing nine hundred straight days of bitterness towards your ex. Or nine hundred straight weeks of trying to find peace in your problem-solving skills instead of God’s power and plans. Or nine hundred angry questions for God in the midst of your back pain, depression, or cancer. You might have nine hundred million sins that make you think God is frustrated with you, if not completely disgusted. But that’s nothing to God. Because one day on a cross, the Lord Jesus showed up and routed all of your sins. He destroyed every single reason for God to be mad at you. One cross, one day, one sacrifice, one Jesus. Just when you expect your sin to be too much for God, Jesus shows up and says, That’s nothing!

The biggest problem with North Americans is not that they are irreligious...but that they are super religious, and don't notice. Join us for a daily devotion!

Should you name your kid after a killer? I normally wouldn’t recommend naming your kid after the woman who murdered a man while he was sleeping. But when I met one of my wife’s preschool students named Jael, I couldn’t help but smile and think of the story. But Jael, Heber’s wife, picked up a tent peg and a hammer and went quietly to [Sisera] while he lay fast asleep, exhausted. She drove the peg through his temple into the ground, and he died (Judges 4:21). That verse isn...’t in any children’s Bibles! Jael, that quiet tent-wife in northern Israel, seized her opportunity to put the murdering rapist named Sisera to death. Why would she do that? Because God directed the leaders of Israel to deliver the nation from Sisera, so Jael was doing God’s will. Where is the lesson for us? Perhaps that God saves in mysterious ways. He saved Israel from Sisera’s cruel oppression through a tent peg. Just like He previously saved Israel from Pharaoh’s cruel oppression through a Passover lamb and the salty waters of the Red Sea. Just like He would later save you from sin’s cruel oppression through a few pegs (nails) and a wooden cross. Your insecurity or pride or worry or spiritual forgetfulness might dominate you like Sisera dominated Israel, but God put those sins to death. He drove them into the cross, and that is where they will stay. Forever. So take a breath today. Your Sisera is dead. You are free to live with God’s constant approval. Thank God for Jael. Thank God even more for Jesus.
