Day 6: Time to look around the house and basement. Are you storing paints and chemicals in your house? Are they stored in a safe and secure way? Do you have anything near a heater or your furnace? You should have at least 3 feet or a meter between a heat source and any flammable materials. Do you like to use your fireplace? When was the last time you got your fireplace and chimney cleaned. Creosote and other flammable chemicals can build up and catch fire. Chimneys should be cleaned out by a certified company only.
Day 5: Today we will look at hazards around the house. Take a look at your extension cords and power bars. How old are they? A good way to remember safety is never plug something into a power bar or extension cord with a smaller cord. This can overheat. How much dust is in or on the power bar? Don't put extension cords under carpets or inside the walls. These are all great suggestions for safety. Stay safe
Day 4: Let's talk about some kitchen safety. If you've ever been cooking something and suddenly remembered you needed to change the laundry load or answer the phone, well we all know how easy it is to get distracted. The best thing of course is to never leave the kitchen when cooking, but you could put an oven mitt under your arm to remind you that you need to get back to the kitchen if you do leave for a moment. Also, where to put a fire extinguisher? The best way to figure out where is to stand in the kitchen with your back to the stove/oven and facing the exits from your kitchen. Now look towards the exits and that is where you should mount it. The reason is that if you head to the fire extinguisher in an emergency and turn around with it, if the fire is now too big to try and put it out, you can still head out the door safely.
Day 3: This year's Fire Prevention Week theme is "Serve up Fire Safety". Here is a link to some great prevention ideas and there are some games for the kids to play too. Most home fires start in the kitchen because it is so easy to get distracted while cooking. Another reason is because of the number of small appliances we leave plugged in. No Power - No Fire. https://www.nfpa.org//St/Preparedness/Fire-Prevention-Week
Day 2: Let's talk about smoke detectors. I know, so repetitive. They are so important! How old is your smoke detector. If your detectors don't have an expiry date, you can add 10 years to the manufacture date. Also, give them a good look. Are there spider webs and dust. You can give them a quick vacuum. If there is a build up of dust in or around your detectors they might not work properly which means you might not be protected while you sleep. And never never paint over them. Even if they don't match your colour scheme.
