STACKING HABITS FOR SUCCESS When building and maintaining new habits, try using existing ones to your advantage. We all have a list of habits that we do every day without failure. Think of your morning routine, for example. Perhaps it looks something like this: get out of bed, take a shower, brush your teeth, get dressed, make a cup of coffee or tea, and do on.... But wait...what IS a habit? At the core of each of your habits is a simple loop called the Habit Formation Loop. It consists of 3 components: 1 CUE: The external trigger in your environment that prompts your habit (Ex. getting dressed). 2 ROUTINE: This is the habit + action itself in response to the cue (Ex. turning on the coffee machine). 3 Reward: The benefit gained from the habit (Ex. Fresh brewed coffee to start your day). The to habit stacking is pairing an existing habit with a new one by turning the existing habit’s REWARD into the CUE for your new habit. We already do this every day without realizing. Take the example above, where the cue to turn on the coffee machine is getting dressed for the day. Let’s say you wanted to implement a morning journal routine. If you are a morning coffee drinker, you could pair your coffee habit with your journal habit by making your coffee the cue to your journaling: After I brew a fresh cup of coffee, I will write down 5 intentions for the day. How do I stay MOTIVATED? Whether you are trying to consistently implement daily exercise, change your nutrition habits, start a business or a side hustle, or pursue a challenging program or careerstaying the course is tough. How can you stay motivated through the tough times? How are some people seemingly motivated all of the time? ... The truth isthey aren’t! A business owner spending their Saturday night sorting through bank statements isn’t enthusiastic about accounting. A person waking up for a 6 AM workout before heading to work, loves their warm bed just as much as you. Contrary to what most of us assume, accomplishing difficult goals or changes has very little to do with feeling motivated all of the time. While motivation can be the spark to ignite change, it is typically fleeting, ebbing + flowing, and doesn’t last long enough to see the change through. So, if not motivation, what carries you through when times get tough? At Canuck, we believe that the answer lies in the verb form of discipline: To train or develop by instruction + exercise. Ok. That’s great and all, but how do I become more disciplined? There were a lot of things that 2020 threw at us...a world impacting pandemic + a major social justice movement; both impacting our sport enough to make change for the better. As a community, we stood #canuckstrong together We learned along the way how to adapt + pivot to keep us moving + doing our best to stay healthy + safe. ... As you reflect today or in days to come, it may be a challenge to remember if you accomplished any goals this past year. Most likely they weren’t the goals you wrote done in January, but new positive lifestyle habits that manifested...remember it’s the smallest action that causes ripples of healthy change in your life... Did you focus on much needed self care that was previously lacking? Did you try to stay consistent with your sleep schedule? Make time for your fitness routine? Due to the current lockdown, we are unable to continue this tradition sadly But on this #givingtuesday we are sharing a local non-profit that is in much need this holiday seasonThe Housing Help Centre. ... Many people do not know that @thehousinghelpcentre works with over 5,000 families + individuals in Scarborough + York Region each year. Their comprehensive services help clients to find and maintain affordable housing. This is achieved through services for survivors of domestic violence, refugees and vulnerable seniors, working with landlords, providing counselling, a rent bank and access to food and meals. All of their services aim to address the root causes of homelessness + prevent homelessness before it happens. All services are inclusive and offered in more than 20 languages! The housing crises faced by their clients were amplified in 2020, as they are among the most vulnerable to the negative health, social and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. We knew next to nothing about running a business and had no idea if anyone other than us would even show up! THIS IS OUR TRAINING GROUND. It is not a Globo Gym...not even close...yet we are in week 2 of the mandated gym closure. This what a @crossfit box looks like. A community of a couple hundred; not a membership of thousands.... We have ALWAYS required members to reserve for class; not because the Government mandated it. We have ALWAYS capped our classes for quality and safety; not because the Government mandated it. We HAVE gone above and beyond the mandated 6' apart between persons when working out. We HAVE designated workout stations for each member in class that is MUCH GREATER THAN 6' APART FROM EDGE TO EDGE of each station. Why? Because people move when they workout so 6' apart is not enough! We REQUIRE each member to be logged for tracing of what time and station location they were working in while in our facility. We REQUIRE members to sanitize + wear upon entering the facility. Each member is RESPONSIBLE for sanitizing their station before leaving after their workout. The Coach is then RESPONSIBLE for ensuring the space is cleaned AGAIN and safe before the next members come in at their designated time. We are a Community of individuals that believe in the balance of both physical + mental wellness in order to function in our daily lives. Currently, the Government has shown that both of these aspects are not a priority for our members' health during this pandemic...one of the most stressful times any of us have ever been impacted by. The negative mental health impact will only continue to worsen the longer people are not able to access their outlets for stress reduction. There are many other micro gyms out in the GTA that have worked hard to ensure that protocols are met and ensure the heath + safety of their community members are at the forefront. Currently, the Government has still decided to group and see us all as a "Globo Gym" versus taking a better look at what we are able to do that the "others" may never have or be able to do as effectively. Your is proportionate to your body, it never changes in size and it’s portable which makes it an awesome and fairly accurate tool for portion control. A balanced plate consists of 1-2 palms of lean protein, 1-2 cupped hands of carbs, 1-2 thumbs of fat, and 1-2 fists of vegetables.... 1 When choosing protein sources prioritize fresh, lean, and minimally processed sources such as eggs or egg whites, , poultry, lean beef, game meats, tempeh, Greek yogurt, or legumes. 2 When choosing carbs, focus on whole, minimally processed sources of carbohydrates that pack lots of nutrition and fiber such whole grain rice, oats, legumes, ancient grains, corn, tubers, fruits, and whole grain bread. 3 When choosing fats, aim for a mix of whole-food fats (like nuts and seeds), blended whole foods (like nut butters), and pressed oils (like olive and avocado). 4When choosing your veggies, try to eat the rainbow.
