SEALED WITH CHRISTMAS SPIRIT >> Nothing can replicate the feeling of sending a handwritten Christmas card Season’s Greetings from my home comes in the form of an age-old Christmas tradition pulling out my address book and excitedly writing my Christmas cards every year. Bright lights and snowmen, reindeer and Christmas trees, nativity scenes and the Star of Bethlehem ... Every year, regardless of what special design is on the face of the card, it is sealed with meaningful wishes for the year to come. Thought as time-consuming to some during such a busy time of the year, I always find it important to sit down and send a simple hello in the form of a festive greeting card. On the cusp of being inside the millennial generation, I had wondered if Christmas cards were still relevant, especially within my demographic. A thing of the past perhaps? I was full of hope that the timeworn tradition I loved year after year hadn’t run its course, and to my astonishment Christmas cards were shown to be prominent now more than ever. Millennials are actually sending more cards than any other generation according to the National Greeting Card Association 1.6 billon Christmas cards went out last year. In the age of social media and digital e-cards, who would have guessed that statistic? ...FOR THE FULL STORY SEE OUR DEC. 11 EDITION - - - Interested in becoming a subscriber and supporting locally told stories? JUSTICE IS READY TO BE SERVED >> The Prairie Mountain Community Justice committee is here to make a difference The Prairie Mountain Community Justice program is now underway in the area having recently completed the referral on its first case.... Made up of an 11 person volunteer committee, the program will operate within the municipalities of Russell Binscarth, Riding Mountain West, Roblin, Rossburn, Ellice-Archie as well Gambler and Tootinaowaziibeeng (Valley River) First Nations, using an alternative approach to dealing with offenders. Termed restorative justice, the committee will serve as a mediator between victims and offenders and help them decide a means of restitution which would be satisfactory to both parties. The process takes place outside the courtroom, freeing up time and resources in the heavily burdened justice system. More importantly, restorative justice provides an opportunity for victims and accused to have an open dialogue, which focuses on moving forward and healing. ...FOR THE FULL STORY SEE OUR DEC. 11 EDITION - - - Interested in becoming a subscriber and supporting locally told stories? ON THE MOVE When it comes to the moving of homes or building structures by professional moving companies, the route is normally a gravel or highway surface, however, that somewhat changed on the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 30 as this large metal clad siding shed was hauled from the former Kokke’s Small Engine location near the CP Rail tracks to just south of the community. The R.M. of Yellowhead allowed owner Paul Kokke to take a short cut, heading across a nearby field to... 1st Avenue and then down Highway 21 to its new locale. MADE WITH LOVE >> Russell’s Woolberts Knitting is ensuring Christmas traditions are felt this holiday season With the Christmas holidays fast approaching, you’ll find Russell’s Andrea Stefanishyn, owner of Woolberts Knitting, busy creating whimsical and heartfelt designs that transform traditional knitting crafts into a fashion-forward and thoughtful gift this year. ... I have always been a crafty person, growing up with my mom and I spent lots of time doing little crafts for different holidays, she smiled. I enjoy Christmas, it is such a wonderful time of year I remember making Christmas tree decorations with my mom, which were made out of puzzle pieces and spray painted green and giving them away to family, friends and teachers for Christmas gifts. Taking up knitting in the fall of 2013, I had lost my Great Aunt Berty that spring, growing up she had lived across the road from me, Stefanishyn recalled. I would spend many evenings and weekends with her at her house. We would bake and do lots of fun things and I would spend many nights having sleepovers with her, she would spend her evening knitting while I watched TV. ...FOR THE FULL STORY SEE OUR DECEMBER 4 EDITION - - - Interested in becoming a subscriber and supporting local storytelling?
