Increased awareness of sextortion can reduce the risk of a child or youth interacting online with a potentially dangerous person. According to Cybertip.ca, a few warning signs to look out for are:... 1. Everything happens quickly: Offender begins immediately requesting personal information, photos or to live chat. 2. Provides inconsistent information: Details the offender shares while chatting do not match up with what they are posting. 3. Chatting becomes sexual: Conversation topics turn sexual or an offender begins expressing intense or intimate feelings to the child or youth. 4. Using threats: Offender uses threats that will shame or scare the child or youth to persuade them into sharing more content and information. 5. Attention bombing: The child or youth is manipulated into believing that the offender cares about them through constant communication and attention. Reports of child abuse must be made to the following reporting sources: Lethbridge Police Service Complaint Line: 403-328-4444 Child Abuse Hotline: 1-800-387-5437 (KIDS) Kids Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868 or Text CONNECT to 686868 Crime Stoppers: 1-800-222-8477 Online Exploitation: cybertip.ca Or your local police/RCMP detachment #internetsafety #ChildAdvocacy #yql #csacleth #

Orange Shirt Day Sept. 30 Orange Shirt Day is the acknowledgment of the harm Canada's residential school system had on Indigenous & Metis children's self-esteem and well being and the harm to generations of Indigenous families and communities.... Residential schools (1880-1996) were government-sponsored Christian-based schools established to assimilate Indigenous, Inuit, & Metis children into Euro-Canadian culture. Children in residential schools were stripped of their own cultural and spiritual beliefs, traditions, and practices. Orange Shirt Day is our affirmation of our commitment to ensure that every child matters. The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. Phyllis Webstad's Experience: "I was forced to attend St. Joseph Mission in Williams Lake, British Columbia, Canada for one school year in 1973. I had just turned 6 years old. I lived with my grandmother on the Dog Creek Reserve. We never had very much money, but somehow my granny managed to buy me a new outfit to go to the Mission school. I remember going to Robinson’s store and picking out a shiny orange shirt. It had string laced up in front, and was so bright and exciting just like I felt to be going to school! When I got to the Mission, they stripped me, and took away my clothes, including the orange shirt! I never wore it again. I didn’t understand why they wouldn’t give it back to me, it was mine! The color orange has always reminded me of that and how my feelings didn’t matter, how no one cared and how I felt like I was worth nothing. All of us little children were crying and no one cared." Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for us to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. Learn more: OrangeShirtDay.org Reconciliation Lethbridge

Grooming is a process used by offenders to prepare a child for sexual abuse. Often very carefully planned, and it can take place over weeks, months or even years. Survivors of sexual assault deal with a great deal of shame - this shame can stay longer than the memory of the abuse itself. As you venture forward know that within your healing journey is the power to release shame. You can do this!

What to do when a child tells you about their abuse: *listen carefully to what they're saying *let them know they've done the right thing by telling you *tell them it's not their fault *say you'll take them seriously... *don't confront the alleged abuser *explain what you'll do next *report the abuse to the proper authorities. October is Child Abuse Prevention Month and Child Advocacy Centres across Alberta are once again coming together to raise awareness about child abuse and the important role communities can play in helping to keep children and youth safe. The CSAC is working with our community partners towards developing a Child Advocacy Centre and are committed to work collaboratively with Alberta Child Advocacy Centres to provide customized supports for children and youth. Child Advocacy C...entres are devoted to giving children and youth who have experienced abuse a safe space to share their story and receive the support and resources they need throughout the entire disclosure, investigation, and judicial process. Child abuse is not limited to any particular community or demographic; it can happen anywhere, and we all have a role to play in keeping children and youth safe. It is important that everyone is informed on what they can do to help create safer communities by recognizing the signs of abuse and understanding their responsibility to speak up. It is, in fact, everyone’s legal duty to report suspected child abuse. Together, we can keep our communities safe. To donate or for more information, please visit our website at www.csacleth.ca
