Cory Choma PT, CGIMS, Clinical Specialist (Pain) (Senior Physiotherapist) Cory has been in clinical practice since 1996 and is a founding member of CSA. He is one of only 4 Clinical Specialists in Pain Science in Canada and one of a handful of people awarded an ISTOP (Institute for the Study and Treatment of Pain) Honorary Fellowship. Cory has been teaching GunnIMS domestically and internationally since 2003 and is a senior instructor for the Continuing Professional Developme...nt branch of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. GunnIMS is appropriate for stubborn, recurrent or longstanding pain that appears to be resistant to treatment and has a significant peripheral neuropathic component. Cory and Dr. S. His therapy practice is centred on the core idea of freedom through mobility and utilizes 3 main treatment approaches: education, manual (hands-on) therapy, and therapeutic exercise. His goal is to work with you to understand what is your bodys functional movement patterns. With education, you will learn more about your condition/injury and appropriate ways to optimize their effect on your movement. With manual therapy, he will work with you to free up stiff regions of your body. With exercise, you will have a better understanding of how to strengthen your body and/or loosen the tight muscles and joints. Whether you are an individual who acquired injuries through sport or work, a motor vehicle accident client, the average Joe working 9-to-5, or are simply wanting to improve the overall health and mobility of your body, Abraham wants to work with you toward achieving your goals. NKT, or neurokinetic therapy, focuses on understanding the relationships between a persons dysfunctional patterns of movement and the brain. His other educational experience includes a Masters degree in Physical Education and Recreation from the U of A, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology with Kinesiology at Acadia University. Daniels passions revolve around sport and activity for all ages, including experience working with children and youth, to more mature populations. As a previous varsity football athlete, track and football coach, and participant year long in recreational activities such as golf, hockey, and skiing, he has a keen understanding of sport-related ailments. With the addition of working with athletes, he is familiar with post-surgical protocols and the means required to treat, and prevent injuries from occurring. His educational experience with rehabilitation in children with disabilities founded his holistic, psychosocial based treatment that guides his practice. Next up in our Meet the Team series is Tanya! Physical therapist 51st Avenue ... Tanya graduated from University of Alberta in 2001 with a BSc in physiotherapy. She began her career in Canmore, Ab where she worked with national level cross country and downhill skiers. When she moved to Edmonton, she switched gears and worked with chronic pain and general orthopedic clients. Because of this, she is comfortable treating a wide range of clients and feels that communication and education is the key to a successful therapist/client relationship. Tanyas ultimate goal in treatment is to correct underlying problems that could cause the reoccurrences. Her interests extend to working with individuals injured in motor vehicle accidents, those with work injuries, post-surgical patients (joint replacements, shoulder, knee and ankle reconstructions and more) and working with older adults for fall prevention. She will work with you to individualize your treatment so that it is functional and relevant to your condition and goals. Her treatments will focus on aiding your recovery with therapeutic exercise, hands-on therapy (joint mobilizations, stretching, deep tissue massage) and education. Modalities such as heat, ice, and therapeutic machines (ultrasound, TENS, etc.) may also be included for symptom management. Jaime is a graduate of the Master of Science in Physical Therapy program from the University of Alberta. In the future, she is interested in pursuing additional education in acupuncture and chronic pain management, and maybe one-day the burgeoning field of animal rehabilitation. First in our Meet the Team series we are highlighting Cory! Physical therapist 51st Avenue ... Cory has been in clinical practice since 1996 and is a founding member of CSA. He is one of only 4 Clinical Specialists in Pain Science in Canada and one of a handful of people awarded an ISTOP (Institute for the Study and Treatment of Pain) Honorary Fellowship. Cory has been teaching GunnIMS domestically and internationally since 2003 and is a senior instructor for the Continuing Professional Development branch of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. GunnIMS is appropriate for stubborn, recurrent or longstanding pain that appears to be resistant to treatment and has a significant peripheral neuropathic component. Cory and Dr. S. Goodman are contributing authors in the text Trigger Point Dry Needling: An Evidenced and Clinical-Based Approach where they present a chapter on GunnIMS.
