CSC Calgary Chapter 23.03.2021

Message from the Chair Jonathon Greenland, CTR With 2020 almost over, we start to look ahead into the new year. 2020 brought some struggles but we persevered and showed determination that it wouldn’t break who we are. CSC Calgary had a fantastic Connections Café with guest speaker Lisa Longball’ Vlooswyk in February followed by the 4th annual Ignite student competition. We had our 2nd annual pedal pub in July, which brought many needed laughs and friends together. This year ...CSC Calgary will not have a Christmas social and will resume monthly meetings in January. With the holidays just a few weeks away I ask that everyone be safe and responsible, and cherish those you love. Best wishes for joy and love this Christmas season, for you and your family. Tom Newton, CCCA Elected to the CSC College of Fellows CSC Calgary would like to congratulate Tom Newton, CCCA on being elected to the CSC College of Fellows! ... In Tom’s 30 years of CSC membership, he has served CSC both locally and nationally. Most recently, Tom served on the CSC Calgary chapter executive as a member-at-large, always willing to step up when needed. Whether to help teach a CSC course, sit on CTR presentation review panel, or volunteer for the golf tournament, you can always count on Tom. He served as CSC Calgary liaison to both the Calgary Construction Association, and the Alberta Roofing Contractors Association for many years. Tom continues to write articles for the chapter newsletter bringing industry news to the attention of members. On a national level, Tom served on the Technical Studies Committee (TSC), as part of the Tek-Aid subcommittee, and on the editorial advisory board for Construction Canada magazine. Education and mentoring are important to Tom. In 1992, Tom became one of the two Calgary trustees for the CSC Alberta Section Training Trust Fund (CSC-AS-TTF). The CSC-AS-TTF was instrumental in the development and funding of CSC’s education courses. He has taught portions of many CSC courses including the Principles of Construction Documentation course. Tom has been a presentation review panel member for technical representatives working on their certification, willing to provide constructive criticism and pointers to prospective CTRs. He is always willing to share advice based on his expertise and knowledge gained over 40+ years in the industry. In addition to serving on the 2013 conference technical program committee, Tom co-presented a session with Russell Snow. The session coined as A fireside chat with Tom and Russ was aimed at product representatives as a way of sharing what specifiers and product representatives expect from each other. The session was a huge success and so popular people were standing at the back of the room. Tom has been the recipient of many chapter and national awards, ranging from chapter awards of merit, national awards of merit, and program director’s awards. Please join the Calgary Chapter in congratulating Tom on a very well-deserved election to the CSC College of Fellows. The induction ceremony will be scheduled at a later date.

Dear Members, The CSC Annual Conference is scheduled for May 20 thru 24, 2020 in Montreal, QC. Like all of you, we have been actively monitoring the evolving impact of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19 from various information sources including local public health agencies, Health Canada, provincial authorities and the World Health Organization. We have made the difficult decision to cancel CSC Conference 2020. This difficult decision was not made lightly, but was made keeping ...the health, safety and wellbeing of you, our members, delegates and sponsors in mind to minimize the risk to all. By making this difficult and unprecedented decision in advance, we also hope to minimize any stress or inconvenience to you and to enable you sufficient time to cancel any arrangements that you may have made. We will be issuing full/complete refunds without any administrative costs to all delegates and sponsors. This will happen within the next 30 days. As you may be aware, we have legislative requirements and obligations that we fulfill at conference every year, including our Annual General Meeting. We are in the process of investigating the options available to CSC and the membership will be notified once the Board has made a decision. If you have any questions, please check out our FAQ page on the conference section of our website (www.csc-dcc.ca/Conferences/). Thank you for your continued support and understanding of the situation at hand. Be well and stay safe. Yours in Service, Greg Hofsted Nick Franjic, CAE President Executive Director

CSC January BREAKFAST meeting *** REMINDER REGISTRATION CLOSES January 13th, 2020 AT NOON *** The interrelationship of post-secondary education and industry... Date: Tuesday, January 14, 2020. Location: The Winston Club, 2502 6 Street NE, Calgary, AB Time: 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. How does post-secondary influence industry and how does industry influence post-secondary? In the industrial age, the relationship between post-secondary education and industry was linear. In today’s information age, you can no longer receive one-time training for a promising 40 year career. Education systems need to be agile, flexible and responsive. In order to have a promising career, one needs to commit to a path of life-long learning. The relationship between industry and education needs to be much more iterative and a two-way flow of information. Individuals and organizations that subscribe to this philosophy will surely benefit. This presentation will cover: Alberta economy and the role of construction How the present economy is impacting enrollment Women in construction and other non-traditional careers How technology is impacting the construction industry and construction education Internationalization of construction education Summary of the School of Construction at SAIT (programs, courses, content) School of Construction’s strategy and focus for growth to best serve the construction industry Speaker: Reva Bond Ramsden, B.A., B.Sc., M.B.A., SAIT Dean of the School of Construction Meeting Sponsor: Corinne Golding Specifications Inc.
