The Home Depot Chilliwack Receives a 10 Year Rotary at Work Inclusive Employer Award! The Home Depot Chilliwack believes that all people can work and each person has unique skills, abilities that contribute to the team and the company culture. Their motto is a great attitude is what we need! Everything else you can train. The Home Depot believes in paid employment and the Store Manager says, Why do work experiences, just hire someone and pay them if you know they can do the ...job. When The Home Depot first opened 2010 in Chilliwack they realized that people with different lifestyles and backgrounds challenge each other more. Diversity creates different opinions and you need that to help connect with a wider customer base and come up with a wider range of solutions to problems. People in Chilliwack felt understood by a more diverse team of associates. This is why The Home Depot Chilliwack understands that the needs of their employees, making them feel valued, respected, has had a significant and positive impact on employee retention. You might have heard the Store Manager Aaron say, Having a work force that is diverse or inclusive gives businesses a competitive edge and he challenges all other businesses to do the same. Aaron has spoken to other businesses in Chilliwack at Employer Events being a mentor to other businesses that have questions. The Home Depot has emulated an inclusive diverse team by providing excellent leaders that role model for the company and work hard for our community by volunteering, providing supplies to create more opportunity to build relationships and have a work culture where everyone is included and respected. Samuel is a client of CSCL, Supported Employment Services. Sam has finished his Basic Security Training through Griffin Security here in Chilliwack. It has been a challenge during Covid-19 as the five-day course was shut down in March after just two days of training. The delay in the training proved to be a benefit to Sam as he was able to meet together on Zoom with his Vocational Counsellor to review the material on a regular basis. Sam took the exam through the Justice Institute British Columbia. Thanks to Griffin Security and the JIBC for approving some accommodations through this process. Sam passed the 100-question exam and will soon become Security Professional at Griffin Security. Good luck Sam! Thanks also to the Seabird Island Band for providing additional support and funding to Sam for his job start.

Joshua is a committed and dedicated Youth who knew he wanted to secure a paid employment opportunity for himself. He has attended a variety of programs offered through CSCL’s Child & Youth Services Department (on and off) since 2008. Upon graduating from high school, during a pandemic no less, Josh enrolled in CSCL’s BRIDGE/BIG Service (Youth Supported Employment Service for Youth 15-24 years of age). A few short weeks, after connecting with BRIDGE/BIG, Josh had secured an i...nterview at Walmart. With some support from his Vocational Counsellor, Josh participated in some one-to-one interview preparation workshops, and went on his way - he landed the job! Josh has now been employed for over 3 months at the local Walmart, and he continues to work part time so that he can attend the University of the Fraser Valley where he is working towards his educational goal of obtaining his Bachelor of Science Degree. We need each other more than ever as we live under the constraints of lock-down due to the pandemic. We need to be deliberate about our social connections because they are no longer built into our daily lives. Phone calls, video calls and other digital technologies offer excellent opportunities for connecting, even when we can’t be in the same room. What is known as passive socializing like listening to others can foster social connection and reduce social isolation. Th...e pandemic can also bring us together in unexpected ways. Canada has been at the forefront of a campaign for caremongering, which has seen members of the community helping one another during these difficult times. The Supported Employment Team has done just that this week. In addition to maintaining connection through Zoom meetings and phone calls they have put together wellness bags for each of their clients. The bags included personal care/wellness items such as hand sanitizer, snacks, puzzles, word search, Canada Food Guide, online cooking resources and other employment tips for success.

Covid -19 Has Not Stopped the Support Needed! In January 2020 Stephanie was excited about the opportunity to work in a senior’s facility where she felt she could help the senior’s living there and wear a uniform that she felt proud to go to work in. At the end of January, she was hired at Eden Care Home as a casual worker training in Housekeeping, Laundry and Dietary Aide. The Covid -19 pandemic has not stopped Stephanie from wanting to be at work supporting some of the more... vulnerable people in our community. She has taken shifts when others have stopped working because they are afraid or have children at home they need to care for. Stephanie, like everyone else, has been trained to practice all the precautions needed to keep herself and every one else safe. She is still learning various aspects of the job and receives support from her Vocational Counsellor on site. Stephanie says, I’ve worked here casually for a few months doing DA, Housekeeping and Laundry and love I it! It’s hard work but worth it in the end, the staff are nice, we are like one big family here at Eden. See more

Mathew has received services through CSCL for a number of years, participating in various youth programs and then continuing to be involved with CSCL through BRIDGE Youth Employment Program. Mathew enjoys socializing with his peers, and while he was initially opposed to the concept of employment, he has discovered that work is somewhat like volunteering for pay. He works hard and loves to help others. He has completed many volunteer positions, including yard/outside lawn maintenance work and assisting on a Christmas Parade Float Decoration Crew to enter a fabulous float in the local Rotary Christmas Parade. Earlier this month Mathew applied for a casual position as a Maintenance Assistant. After all his hard work it is no surprise his application was successful! No one was more excited than Mathew about this. Congratulations Mathew.

People with disabilities have talents, skills and insights that our workforce needs period. Nathan was hired at Amix Steel and Surplus in January to help with the construction and renovation of a cattle auction house to the current Steel Distribution Warehouse. Nathan met Scott Haggerty who took Nathan under his wing to teach him all about demolition, power tools and construction. Once the new building was in place Nathan was kept on to work in the steel yard. First he cleaned and tidied up the yard and he is now learning how to prepare orders for pick up. General Manager Joel Jackson is happy to have Nathan on board and adds that there should always be a large variety of work around for Nathan as a Shop/Yard Hand. As you can see Nathan is happy to be part of the great team at Amix.

When the Mentor Ability Initiative was explained to Brian, he immediately said he wanted to learn how to wash and clean cars. The Mentor, Sharmaine May, the Ge...neral Sales Manager, was eager to participate in the Mentor Ability Initiative and after hearing what Brian wanted to do, she said she would be happy to provide a mentor for him. Brian was met by Ron, the lot manager, who introduced him to Mica. Mica took Brian under his wing and showed him the steps to prepare the vehicle before the actual washing/cleaning begins. He did a walk around inspection and took the vehicle to a gas station for a fill up. When he got back, the mentorship really began. Mica demonstrated how to clean the inside of the vehicle and then it was Brian’s turn. After Mica showed Brian what was expected for the outside of the vehicle, Brian and Mica took turns with the different areas that needed to be scrubbed, washed and rinsed. They cleaned 1 van and 2 trucks. Mica was very friendly and answered all of Brian’s questions. He was helpful in pointing out some possibilities for Brian to pursue. The rest of the Staff that he met throughout his time there, were all friendly and encouraging. Brian was excited throughout the shift and said he enjoyed the tasks that were given him. Brian left the dealership feeling proud of himself; he found out that washing vehicles is a possibility in his future. Arriving at One Goal is the Starting Point to Another In May 2018 Mercy set a goal of obtaining her Learner’s License. Mercy studied every week with her Vocational Counsellor so that she would be ready to take her learner’s test. She used the online learner’s driver’s practice and studied the book. Mercy’s Vocational Counsellor soon realized Mercy had never sat in the driver’s seat of a car to know where everything in the car was located. Mercy sat in her Vocational Counsello...r’s car and learned where everything was and how to use it. Some days the Vocational Counsellor would take Mercy out in the passenger seat and Mercy would direct her Vocational Counsellor where to go to set locations, talking the whole time as if she was driving but directing how to drive, speed, lane changing, signaling, stopping, parking, backing up, going forward, etc. This was very helpful to actually understand why some rules are rules and learning to read signs, etc. Mercy was very disheartened when she went 5 times and was unsuccessful. She didn’t give up and today Mercy was so ecstatic she passed she couldn’t hold it in! She told her Vocational Counsellor this is one of my biggest dreams to get my learner’s license and I am so happy I did it! Mercy said she just keeps setting goals for herself to reach her dreams! Stephanie found out about the City of Chilliwack position through her Job Coach. She was not sure about it so asked if she could go check it out. Through talking to her job coach it sounded like a perfect first job! Stephanie likes being outside so the first part of the job appealed to her, working outside sweeping walkways and cleaning any garbage from around City Hall. The second part of the job is indoors making sure garbage’s and recycling bins are emptied. This may sound... easy but it is very busy, a bit of a maze and you will never need to go to the gym after work! Stephanie liked the idea and promptly got a message to come for an interview. Stephanie started working in December and says, The staff that work at City Hall are very nice and really appreciate the job I do. I would say it is a really good first job experience for me. Congratulations Stephanie! See more

Chance got hired at Home Depot on March 28, 2018. He was so excited to start his first shift; unfortunately his power chair that keeps him mobile decided to stop working at the same time. Chance was upset about this; he had to start his new job without the aid of his speedy wheels. He took it in to be fixed and because his chair was older they could not fix it as the parts where not made any longer. Chance had to us his manual wheelchair which made him extremely tired by the ...end of each shift. SES Supported him to gain financial assistance from WorkBC - Kara Stokes and the Opportunity Fund - Sandy Liles .They requested funding for Chance to obtain an electric wheelchair that would work for Chance in his new job. On October 12, 2018 Chance sent his Job Coach an email with a subject heading Wheelchair Dynamo It’s here! and a Smiley Face. Chance got to pick the color for his chair and while chatting with the provider he let them know about his job and how he needed to be able to reach items off the shelf. Chance got a lift!!! Chance feels great about being able to reach for customers that come into The Home Depot and show them products! Chance says It’s been really great for work! Even though it was a hard long wait for it, it was worth it! See more
