Have you all heard about KPU’s cuts to the music program? If yes or if no, PLEASE read on... A few days ago, KPU music students and faculty learned that the un...iversity would not be accepting any intake into the first-year foundation, diploma, or degree program. After meeting with the chair of the music department, we learned that the Faculty of Arts is required to cut twenty-five courses from their 2019-2020 course offerings. Of all twenty-one departments in the Faculty of Arts, music is the only department KPU will be cutting these courses from, meaning that one hundred percent of the cuts will be targeted directly at the KPU music program. While it has been recognized that some aspects of the music program’s budget are in need of alteration, this announcement came before a degree revision that was set solve the issues. We are asking everyone if they’d consider participating in a letter-writing campaign to the Dean, President, and Vice-President. We need to make it known that KPU music has an impact on our community. We need as many people as possible to write these higher-ups, addressing their concerns about the suspension of intake of first-years and how KPU music has personally impacted your business, school, students, ensemble, festival, workplace, classroom...you get the idea. Ideally, the letters should address the Dean of Arts, Diane Purvey, at [email protected], the President of KPU, Alan Davis, at [email protected], and the Vice President, Salvador Ferreras, at [email protected] and should blind carbon copy (BCC) the Chair of the music department, Jane Hayes at [email protected]. Lastly, if you feel passionate enough about this to share about the issue on social media, please join our social media campaign with the hashtag #kpumusicmakenoise . For the sake of music education, let’s make noise.
