Type and Image Studio starts March 09 The combination of type and image is a vital form of visual communication conveying complex ideas, construct meanings, implied narratives, and emotions. Students will explore the relationship between type and image across print and digital media. Course projects will combine visual and verbal elements to create sophisticated design, while looking at the formal considerations of materials in art and design production. Students are encouraged to use traditional media and digital computer programs, with an emphasis on the exploration of and through materials, process, and iteration. Meet Continuing Studies instructor Christine McGlade Christine teaches the Introduction to Visual Analytics and Introduction to User interface (UI) and User experience (UX) Design courses. Christine is also a member of the digital futures faculty at OCAD U and a senior partner at Analytical Engine Interactive. For Christine, the reason that the OCAD U Continuing Studies courses are different is because they have an inclusive, diversity based, anti-colonial approach. And, ut...ilising the online and on-demand learning environment, Christine is able to deliver a significant amount of material in six weeks. Without a sizeable time commitment, students are able to get a sense of what they might want to pursue further. Visit OCADU.ca/ContinuingStudies for more information on our courses!

ADRIENNE EDWARDS: BLACKNESS IN ABSTRACTION AND THE WORK OF DENYSE THOMASOS Wednesday, February 24, 7 pm (Zoom) Internationally-renowned, New York-based curator Adrienne Edwards discusses abstract art’s capacity to address complex questions of representation and identity. Building on the concept of her 2016 exhibition at Pace Gallery, Blackness in Abstraction, Edwards emphasizes blackness as a material, method and mode, and discusses how artists like Denyse Thomasos (1964-201...2) negotiate and exhaust the paradigm of black representation in visual art, and explore notions of opacity, non-visibility and the inextricable conceptual, political, and social dimensions of abstract art.
