Is an early referral to physio effective? Here’s some interesting info from a 2012 retrospective study on low back pain & healthcare costs: - Of 32,000 patients an average of only 7% were referred to PT for their back pain -Of the 7% who received PT, 53% received PT within 2 weeks of their diagnosis of low back pain (Early PT) and 47% received PT between 15-90 days (Delayed PT) ... Those who received Early PT were: 1. Less likely to have advanced imaging 2. Less likely to have injections 3. Less likely to have surgery 4. Less likely to use narcotic medications 5. Fewer doctor visits 6. Lower overall healthcare costs (approx $2700 ea.) Overall, it showed that delaying referral for Physiotherapy may increase risk for additional health care usage and costs.

Fall Prevention! One of the things we find ourselves talking about with clients this time of the year as we move into slip-season is how we can prevent falls. Balance exercises are one of the best ways of increasing our ability to recover our balance once we lose it. The nice thing about these exercises is that they can be adapted for a wide spectrum of patients. Whether you’re recovering from a broken bone/surgical procedure or simply want to be preventative about falls, ...the staff here at C.S. can meet you where you’re at and begin progressing you toward a greater sense of safety and balance. Here’s some slip-tips you can start with right now: 1. Widen your base of support when walking/standing. (Increase the spread between your feet). This gives more room for recovery of balance if you DO lose it. 2. Footwear - think of adding removable spike/cleats to your boots. 3. Stand still for a moment when getting out of a vehicle. Bend each knee and ankle a few times before beginning to walk. This helps wake up your muscles and get your circulation increased after having sat for a while. 4. Spend time each day balancing on each foot (use support from a counter etc. if needed). Aim to build up to 30sec each side. 5. Come see a professional at C.S. Physiotherapy & Wellness Centre for a customized balance training program! Stay safe out there!

Are you and your children exercising enough during the Covid-19 pandemic? Recent published research from statistics Canada would suggest that maybe we’re not. Have a read of the research (link in our bio). Build your own immunity and bolster your physical and mental health naturally by spending less time on screens, drinking more water and getting quality sleep. Make sure you’re getting the right balance of vitamins and minerals through diet or supplements and keep talking t...o the people you love about the way you feel:) We can do much more to protect ourselves even beyond masks and distancing... The results of the present study suggest that avoiding excessive screen time and engaging in exercise, particularly outdoors, were important behaviours associated with better perceived mental and general health during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is impossible to predict when the COVID-19 pandemic will subside and it is possible that physical distancing measures will be a necessary part of life for the foreseeable future. Physical activity has always been important for a variety of health outcomes and this study supports the notion that healthy active living is particularly vital during times of confinement to help people maintain their mental and physical health. -Statistics Canada 2020
