What? It's true. . What's my most reaffirming moment of 2020, which was? ... . Embrace the suck, work hard, never EVER quit, BELIEVE you can and you will. . 2020, you were awful, but your asshatness allowed me to learn how to think for myself and made me turn this year into the most successful year of my life. . Boom. . (I also can't take credit for my takeaway. An awesome patient said it first...another confirmation that I have the best and most awesome patients out there) #getafterit

We wanted to give a big thank you to our past students Laura and Megan for joining our Ashern clinic for 6 weeks! . Let's be real. Ashern isn't exactly a 'tourist destination' for students, particularly for those raised in the city. I was told it wouldn't be likely that we would get anyone.... Buuuuttttt.....we have had 4 students join us this year! Woohoo! . We are so grateful to spend time with the girls and really give them an opportunity to see what a rural/small town clinic is all about. . This clinic may be humble but it is a powerhouse of connection and growth and our #physiophamily is just the best!! . Thanks to everyone for making the girls feel so welcoming and for trusting them to work with you! . It's unbelievably rewarding to see the growth, increased confidence and improved skill set in just 6 weeks, and to give them a taste of what our awesome small town is all about. . (If anyone is wondering why I was so stern, I was trying to emulate the Step Brothers movie cover. I guess I got the Adams Family mixed up and forgot to give a cheesy smile )

Southern #Manitoba get your shovels out! And watch this video for some very valuable tips to prevent your sore back! . Important factors to take into consideration -:... . Have you had a heart attack or have high blood pressure? The heart rate can increase quite a bit when shovelling and it may not be safe. Ask for help or just don't do it. . Do you have balance or dizziness? Shovelling is likely not a good idea for you. . Do you have low back pain? Or any other kind of pain that may be exacerbated? Shovelling the light, fluffy stuff may be ok but use caution when it gets heavy. . When in doubt, ask for help, or pay your neighborhood kids to do it for you. . #winteractivities #injuryprevention #snowblower #lowbackpain #moveandplay #mobility #lowbackinstability #cardiovascular #outdoorexercise #blizzard #physiotherapy #physiotherapy #ashern #eriksdale #letitsnow #backpain #manisnowba #shovelingsnow #winterishere #physio #healthtip #physiotherapy #physicaltherapy

Good morning!! Jenna is in the office helping out patients with their pelvic floor!! Did you know that you don't need to have kids to have your pelvic floor assessed? I'll use myself as a real example! ... I peed my pants often when I was around 30..(one time down a ski hill. So warm, yet so terrible) Pelvic floor physio educated and treated me on what was going on and I don't pee myself anymore! My pelvic floor muscles were so tight that they couldn't tighten to stop the pee . Meghan will be answering phones today so call if you need to get in or if you want to ask Jenna questions!

Manitoba is going into #codered. I can feel the stress and anxiety of our province through my phone. . Here is my plan! ... . Visualizing positivity so much it would make a unicorn puke rainbows. . Spreading kindness like it's going out of style. . Leading my amazing team and new cohort of Physiotherapy students to the best of my ability. . Treating our #physiotherapy clinic as a sanctuary for our patients. An opportunity to forget about stress, heal, be pampered, decompress, be vulnerable, and feel safe. . I refuse to let stress and anxiety rule my day and I will do my best to be a light for others who are struggling. . Never taking a day for granted knowing that Jon and I are very blessed to not have our world turned upside down by this god awful #covid. . Let's be honest, I also had a beverage. . Here is to taking one day at a time and making each one the best I possibly can for me, and for my circle. . #gratitude #mindset #positivity #community #spreadlove #begood #dogood

Stretching is an essential component of your wellbeing, yet very few people stretch on a regular basis. .... It is ESSENTIAL for our wellbeing and injury prevention, particularly with people being more sedentary. . Here are a few quick dos and don’ts for stretching: . Do: stretch everyday! Seriously. Our bodies adapt to the position we are kept in the most and will tighten up if they aren't moved. . Do: hold the stretch for the prescribed amount of time by your #physio. Everyone is very individual, with different tolerance, so I can't give our a one number fits all here. . Don’t: pulse or bounce the muscle. The muscle needs to be kept on a stretch for the magic to happen! . Do: Go into a comfortable tightness. You should be thinking ‘Oh my gosh is that ever tight, but feels amazing’. . Don’t: stretch into pain. You’ve gone too far when you are wincing or experiencing pain. You're actually preventing your muscles from relaxing further! . Do: the stretch for more than one set. You know when you do a great big stretch in the morning and it feels sooooo good? . That is just the muscles adjusting to the stretch, but nothing has actually lengthened. Repetition is key. . Have anymore questions? Put it in the comments! . #stretching #myofascial #injuryprevention #tightmuscles #yoga #musclepain #aches #quarantine #sedentary #healthiswealth #physicaltherapy #physiotherapy #exercise #ashern #lundar #eriksdale #fisherbranch #steeprock

We have had the pleasure of hosting two second year Physiotherapy students, Lindsay and Sarah, for 6 weeks! . This was our first time working with students and it was a blast!! ... . The girls are from #Winnipeg and they submersed themselves in #rural life and as rural practitioners! . There is no comparison to city and rural physio. The lifestyle, clientele, the pace, culture, are night and day different. . There are significant barriers to health care in a rural setting and they have become great advocates to understanding these issues. They will take away many great lessons learned. . It's been so rewarding to see them grow over the past 6 weeks and we wish them all the very best in their #physiotherapy future! . #smalltown #physioplacement #mptstudent #physicaltherapy #ashern #ruralmanitoba

Do your knees make those rice krispie crunching sounds when you bend down or forward? Worried? Fear not! As long as it is pain-free, you have nothing to worry about. ... Those cracking and popping sounds most commonly come from gas bubbles that form in our joints and are completely harmless. Pain-free popping and cracking is normal and NO - despite what your grandmother told you, you can’t get arthritis from cracking your knuckles. HOWEVER, if you are experience painful pops or clunks that is an indicator that something isn’t working properly. It is best to have that checked out sooner than later, to avoid long term issues. We can help! Send us a message if you have further questions about your noisy joints.

"For me the combination of physical in-clinic and online visits worked perfectly. The initial physical visits were great to diagnose the issue and the subsequent virtual visits ensured I was getting the properly follow up. As someone with a busy schedule the virtual visits took very little time out of my day and still allowed me to make progress toward solving my issue." - J.G.

Here is one simple tip that I believe is the game changer for keeping on top of your routine: Keep one promise to yourself everyday! Just one. Whether it’s drinking 2 litres of water, waking up 15 minutes earlier, completing your exercise program, or reading every day, keeping that one promise will boost your confidence and make you believe that you can stay on track! ... Personally, the day I say ‘yaaa, I’m not going to wake up early today’ is the day that is all goes off track. Who’s been there? Then you sleep in another dayand then another dayand don’t exerciseand feel like cr*pand down the rabbit hole we go. Keep one promise! Start small, and you will be amazed at the results! See more

We want you to know exactly what’s going on with your body, what your treatment plan means, and how to perform each prescribed exercise. While we will do our best to over-communicate, and in simple language, please ALWAYS ask questions. We are here to help, and no question is too big or too small. Forgot to ask at your appointment? Lunges are an exercise commonly prescribed in exercise plans or workout routines, but often are a source of pain or discomfort. We're here to help! By far the most important part of a lunge for beginners is the position of the knee. Ensure that the leg doesn't turn in when you are bending it and dropping down. Always think of keeping the middle of the knee in line with the middle of your foot. Remember, proper form is the most important part. Even if you can only move a tee...ny bit, it's better than going too far and having improper form. If any of these movements hurt, be sure to not continue. Send us a message and we can give you the proper direction!

Looking to get the most of your physiotherapy treatment and appointments? We have some tips for getting you the best care and recovery possible. 1. Trust the process and perform your plan of care as we discussed. There is an incredible amount of information discussed on your first appointment. It’s important to follow the plan and keep track of any questions or concerns that come up. I’m highly trained to help you alleviate your pain and reach goals. Your homework shouldn’t ...be taken lightly if you want to feel better. 2. Consistency in your plan is crucial. That means performing your exercises every day or as prescribed and attending your physio follow ups as consistently as possible. Don’t expect things to change if you don’t change how you were doing things. Don’t expect to reap the results if you aren’t doing the work. If you don’t change what you are doing then how you are feeling won’t change either. I can tell when you aren’t doing the work even if you say you have. 3. Communicate your concerns and frustrations. Are things not getting better as fast as you would like? Are the exercises not feeling how you expected them to? Are your visits looking differently than you thought they would? We want to work together so your plan is meeting your needs! 4. Have patience. Healing, strengthening, learning new habits - it all takes time. Sometimes it even takes months to fully recover. There is nothing wrong with you or the plan. Think of improving your wellbeing as a lifelong journey, with us as your unwavering support and cheerleaders! Don’t expect results to come overnight. This is a big one - with so much instant gratification in our world it’s important to know that changes to our bodies take TIME.

The footwear you get for your kids is extremely important - but what it doesn't need to be is fancy! Development in children is ever changing and their bodies need to be resilient. I strongly discourage parents from buying extra support, shock absorbing footwear for their kiddos, and definitely no orthotics! It prevents the muscles of the foot, legs, and hips from being used and developed, and creates a dependency on the footwear. Just get your kids in a cheap pair of big box store shoes. They don’t need anything more than that. Most importantly, be sure to get them to play barefoot on all types of surfaces grass, gravel, concrete - to ensure they have healthy feet!

Have you read that sitting is the new smoking? Do you work from home or at the office in front of a desk all day? We'd argue that sitting is far from the new smoking. Sitting is not inherently bad for you! However, the problem happens when you sit for too long and you don’t sit optimally. Our body adapts to the positions we are most commonly in. If you’re hunched forward at your desk all day, you can bet that your muscles and joints are going to tighten up and cau...se pain. So, how do you sit properly you ask? Just remember the 90/90 rules: Elbows bend to 90 degrees, hips at 90 degrees. Feet flat on the floor and computer at eye level. Now, we know that it’s unrealistic for some to have the picture perfect desk posture. But it's important to try your best. It also important to be moving every 30 minutes - whether it’s shoulder or neck circles, reaching your arms above your head, standing up to bend forward and touch your toes do something to get you moving! This will prevent your body from getting those aches and pains. See more

MPI reported a 60% increase in serious speed-related driving offences, where the infraction is 50 km/h or more over the limit, in April and June this year! The majority of these serious or catastrophic injuries happen on rural roadways, where speed limits are higher, making collisions more severe. People in motor vehicle accidents are candidates for physiotherapy treatment that is covered through MPI. All you need to do is call the Injury Claims line to get a injury claim number and we take care of the rest to get you started!
