We really enjoyed being the host location for the Community Museums Association of Prince Edward Island's workshop yesterday! The CMA workshops provide excellent information for museum and heritage institutions and are a great chance to connect with museum professionals all across PEI (and Canada- virtually!).
Here are some young Nature Sketchers in PEI who took their Sketch Across Canada sketchbooks out on the Confederation Trail in November. Thanks to Kyliee, Emi an...d Maddie of the 1st Summerside Girl Guides, and Culture Summerside for sharing! #mynaturesketch #coasttocoast https://batemanfoundation.org/sketch-across-canada/ See more
We encourage you to read about a great initiative taken on by Greenfield Elementary School here in Summerside led by teacher Ann Gallant. Students have been making handmade cards to cheer up residents displaced by the Chez-Nous fire. What an inspiring and wonderful thing to do. Way to go youth of Summerside and the staff at Greenfield!

Culture Summerside pays tribute to Doreen Huestis, a wonderful member of the Island arts community, who died this past week. The staff of Culture Summerside will miss Doreen greatly. She was one of our greatest supporters and a source of inspiration in our early days. One staff member said it best, Doreen was a true lady. She was gentle, generous, and inspiring in how she carved out her own career in the arts. Doreen was always one of our first calls when asking artists to ...participate in the innovative Arts in Motion event that became the Summerside Arts Festival. She was skilled at drawing in an audience and sharing her passion for the arts with them. She generously supported the Draw of Arts fundraiser. Growing up in Montrose, Doreen had no exposure to the arts, but she instinctively knew there was an artist within. As a teenager she saved her money until she could afford oil paints and canvas and began to outwardly express her inner creativity. She studied under Eleanor Lowe at Prince of Wales College in the 1950s, and later teamed up with Ardis DesBorough in Summerside. However, her greatest inspiration came from Doctor Georgie Read Barton, who established the Summerside Art Club of which Doreen was an original member. Doreen’s chosen form of expression was realism with her favourite subject matter being wildlife, domestic animals and ocean-scapes. She said passion was what it took to be a great painter. Doreen’s works sold throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, Australia, and Japan. One of her paintings was presented to the Duke and Duchess of York. Yet, for Doreen, her painting was about the joy it brought her; a joy that has been, and will continue to be, shared with a wide audience. What greater legacy could there be than to bring joy to an often hurting world.
The Winter Warmth Food Festival is a great opportunity to support Summerside restaurants while also enjoying some delicious local fare! The festival is presented by Explore Summerside and runs from February 8- 28.
