A lot of people have not experienced racism, especially if they do not belong to a traditionally marginalized group. I am excited to work with companies on Diversity & Inclusion initiatives and I feel that in order to be successful in these types of organizational transformations, you need to understand and have experienced some form of prejudice or racism. Many tough conversations about race and inequality are happening across the world. We, as a society have come so far with technology, medicine, yet, the world has not dealt with #socialinjustice. Over the past decade, the movement most discussed in the corporate world has been removing the glass ceiling for women to be promoted or hired directly into Sr Leadership roles. Many think that we have made substantial progress on this movement, but in reality, according to The Canad...ian Women’s Foundation, the board members for Canada’s top 500 companies consists of only 19.5% women. Today, we must continue this movement as well as strive for diverse and inclusive leadership that includes different races, religions, and LGBTQ status. We as business owners, HR professionals & people leaders need to not only support the movement, but be catalysts to the solution. Eliminating stereotypes, changing hiring and succession practices, training staff & leaders, these are all crucial steps to breaking down barriers. There are many diversity & inclusion activities that can help businesses to get on the right path. Together, we can tackle the systemic issues and move forward one step at a time.
