Cultus Lake Park Board Foreshore Management Plan Application Commercial Type A PLEASE NOTE FOR CLARIFICATION, PUBLIC ACCESS TO ANY PARK LANDS OR PATHWAYS WILL NOT BE RESTRICTED Application Details... The Cultus Lake Park Board (CLPB) submitted a Land Act Lease application to convert the existing foreshore institutional lease for the purpose of managing public facilities and controlling the construction of boathouses, wharves and other water improvement (File 0096779), located along the north edge of Cultus Lake, BC (Cultus Lake Park), into a new commercial lease. Further, CLPB has requested to modify the boundaries of the foreshore lease area to add the sliver of water area (approximately 22.78 ha) for better management of the existing buoys, docks and swim lines. The existing improvements within the current lease comprise: 42 wharves; 4 boat lifts; 209 buoys; Swim lines; and, 2 boat launches: one at the end of Sunnyside Blvd, and the other within Sunnyside Campground. CLPB wishes to reconstruct one of the existing wharves used for the Main Beach Boat Rentals business, as it is at the end of its life span. CLPB would provide public access without interference to the Cultus Lake in the Main Beach area where several public parking lots are available and in the Sunnyside Campground area, while restricting public access to the foreshore in the residential areas due to an increase in criminal activity (i.e. break-ins and theft). There seems to be a significant amount of misinformation being posted to community based social media pages regarding the Tree removal in Parking Lot B. To clarify, the trees are not being removed to create additional parking stalls, they are being removed due to the fact that they have suffered, from the time the parking lot was created from root compaction and the trees are dying from the top down. The original design of this lot had vehicles parking on the roots of these... trees and over the last 20 years the trees ability to get water and nutrients to the top has been prevented. The trees in the parking lot have been dying for many years and have now become unsafe and need to be removed which was brought before the Park Board in a meeting in April of 2020. The decision to remove the trees was decided long before the redesign of the parking lot was contemplated. The plan for the new lot has irrigation for the green spaces and replaces the 35 removed trees with 70 trees that will live for many years into the future. It will also include and new basketball court, resurfacing the tennis courts, a walking path that will link Main Beach to the Plaza, paved travelled areas and paved Handicap accessible stalls and Improved flow to help with lot safety. The Park, through the Environmental Committee has planted 100’s of new trees in the Park over this last 3 years and is committed to continuing to make the park safe and protecting the natural environment by investing in green spaces within the 640 acres. For reference the two pictures below reference the Douglas Fir tree in lot B with root compaction and the other represents a Heathy Douglas Fir with no root compaction on Lakeshore Drive. See more

Parking Lot B Tree Removal 2020 Parking Lot B Reconfiguration Trees in Parking Lot B were professionally assessed in early 2020 and staff was urged to promptly remove dying/compromised trees. Removing unhealthy trees now prior to further deterioration reduces significant risks to health and safety and provides opportunity to off-set the cost of parking lot improvements. This past August the Board considered parking lot development options and plans are underway to improve the lot’s design and function in early 2021. The improved design allows for irrigated landscaping and replacement of trees and a ratio of 2:1.

October 23, 2020 Main Beach improvements continue You may have noticed some more activity this fall at Main Beach. The project priorities are to continue to provide protection of our mature trees and to enhance the experience of users of the Park.... The first step taken was to extend the irrigation lines below the rubber path. Staff then proceeded to add topsoil around the trees and seed with grass. The grass is already up creating a magical transformation from dirt and gravel to a verdant green! Over time, the grass will do the job of reducing further erosion and add to the pleasure of picnicking at Main Beach. Select groups of trees, where significant erosion has occurred and roots are exposed, have been identified for further protection. These areas will be defined with a perimeter of rock, logs, cedar posts and naturalized with native plants and woody material. Most importantly, these protected areas will provide a growing environment for new native trees to be planted for the canopy of the future. Bark mulch will be added to these new areas as well as to the root zones of the large stands of mature trees on the north side [creek side] of Main Beach. This mulch is comprised of chipped material from trees, which provides nutrients for the soil and greatly enhances tree health. This process occurs naturally in the undisturbed forest as organic material breaks down. The other benefits of mulch are moisture retention, root protection, weed control and soil erosion. Our mulch was provided through the very generous donations of the Dyck family and well as from trees removed in the Park.
