Have you looked in your pet's mouth lately? 85% of adult pets have dental disease. If left untreated, dental disease can lead to pain, tooth loss and chronic infection for the pet. As dental disease continuously progresses, it can lead to more serious health issues including damage of the heart, liver and kidneys. A dental, also called a prophy, is a cleaning and polishing of the teeth. Your pet's teeth should be examined for redness or bleeding around gums (gingivitis) Gingi...vitis left untreated can progress into plaque in your pet's mouth and mineralize into tartar. Tartar blocks healthy oxygen from bathing the tooth and allows bacteria to thrive. This causes harm to the bone and tissues of the gums. Eventually the bone around the tooth is eaten away and the gums become sensitive. Perio means "around" Dontal means "tooth". Periodontal disease is disease around the outside of the tooth. Signs your pet is suffering from Periodontal disease *bad breath *tooth loss *dropping food from mouth *red, inflammed gums *abnormal drooling *going to food bowl but not eating *pawing at mouth What does a professional Dental Cleaning and polish consist of? * General Exam before anesthesia *Pre Operative blood work *IV catheter and Fluids (optional) *General anesthesia *Anesthesia monitoring throughout the procedure *Removal of plaque and tartar above the gumline and below the gumline *Polishing *Irrigation *Complete dental charting *Oral surgery if needed *Anesthetic recovery *Home care At Home Dental Care Brushing daily is the number 1 thing you can do for dental care! We are very excited to welcome Dr. Ilse Dedden! Dr. Dedden is joining us on a full-time basis as of August 17th. Dr. Dedden graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2015 after which she worked in a rural mixed animal clinic. In early 2019, she moved into small animal practice and is happy to be joining Cumberland. She loves the variety of things we see in veterinary medicine and is especially interested in dentistry, dermatology, soft tissue surgery and ultrasound. She has two dogs, Holly and Maverick, and a horse named Vienna. She loves to ride, travel and play sports in her spare time. Dr. Dedden is skilled in a large variety of surgeries and is a great addition to our team!

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Jamie Neufeld. Dr. Neufeld joined the clinic in a full time capacity at the end of July. Dr. Neufeld was born and raised here in Saskatoon and grew up riding horses, playing basketball, and beating her brothers at Mario Kart (arguable). She received her Bachelor of Science in Anatomy & Cell Biology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Saskatchewan in 2013 and 2019, respectively. During veterinary school, she spent a summe...r in Uganda with Veterinarians Without Borders to work on a female-empowering food security project involving goats and families in remote areas, and is now involved with a VWB project in Senegal. Following veterinary school, Jamie completed an internship in large animal medicine & surgery outside of Calgary before switching gears and joining the team at Cumberland. She enjoys the diversity of being a veterinarian and looks forward to building relationships with her patients and their families. See more

Blue-green algae thrives during hot seasons and can be found in non-flowing water including rivers, pools and decorative ponds. It makes the water look murky like pea soup or as if paint has been poured into it. Blue-green algae can FATALLY POISON all types of pets, but its especially harmful to dogs. There is NO antidote for the toxins that it produces. Immediate veterinary care is crucial. How to Protect Your Pet: - If you see water with algae blooms, do not allow your dog... to swim in it or to drink it. - If your pet comes into contact with the algae, rinse them with fresh water, take them to your veterinary team, and call your Pet Poison Helpline right away. - Know the symptoms of poisoning: difficulty breathing, lethargy, vomiting, seizures, convulsions, drooling. If you suspect blue-green algae poisoning, please contact us at 306-373-3500.

COVID-19: Additional measures we are taking Dear Clients, Due to the close contact that our work requires, we have taken additional measures to protect you and our team while providing care for your furry family members.... The following changes are effective as of Thursday, March 26, 2020: 1. We are currently operating a closed waiting room and "drop off" policy to protect our clients and staff. We ask that you follow these steps: a. When you arrive, please remain in the hallway and use your cell phone to call us at 306.373.3500. Please ensure your pet is either in a carrier or has a collar that we can attach one of our leashes to. b. Once an exam room is ready, we will come take your pet from you and into an exam room and call you to take a history and talk about any concerns. c. Once the exam is over we call you with our recommended treatment plan, we can then arrange to take payment over the phone. d. We will then bring your pet out to you in the hallway. 2. We are giving priority to urgent or sick pets, as well as time-sensitive puppy/kitten vaccinations. All other services please give us a call and we can decide if the appointment can be done at a later time. 3. As of March 30th we are still OPEN with the following hours: Monday through Friday: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Saturday: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, & closed on Sundays 4. If you are ordering food or medications, please allow 2-4 business days as our suppliers are dealing with increased demand and are trying to fill orders as quickly as possible. We will advise you as soon as your order arrives and you will be asked to pay over the phone. Please call us when you arrive to pick up your order, and we will place your order outside on the table or bring to you in the hallway. 5. For the time being, we are not accepting cash as payment. Credit cards and debit card payments are still available. Following the recommendations of our government and medical experts, we are doing our best to practice social distancing within the constraints of our roles. As such, we have taken measures to avoid both contracting and facilitating the spread of this virus. Thank you for helping us be diligent for everyones safety. As we have heard from all levels of government, the situation is fluid and any updates will be provided as changes occur. - Your dedicated team at Cumberland Veterinary Clinic

At Cumberland Veterinary Clinic, the ongoing health and safety of our clients, their pets, and the dedicated team members that serve the community, is our top priority. We are committed to maintaining a clean and sanitary environment and adhere to a strict standard of protocols to achieve this. As you have heard, the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) is occuring in Canada with cases reported in several provinces. To keep up-to-date, we are following guidelines for best practic...es from local, national and international health authorities. In light of recent news, we will be taking additional measures to ensure that Cumberland Veterinary Clinic is cleaned and sanitized more frequently, particularly in the client-facing areas like reception and waiting areas. We are confident that continued vigilance will help keep our work environment safe, and all those who are in it healthy. Please help us by using hand sanitizer available in the reception area. If you have concerns about visiting our hospital or waiting with your pet, please call ahead to discuss options such as pet drop-off. In addition, we ask that if you are feeling any symptoms such as a cough, fever, or difficulty breathing, please call us at 306-373-3500 so that we can reschedule your appointment or discuss alternate arrangements to ensure that your pet receives the care it needs. Note that currently there is limited evidence that pets can be infected with the virus, and no evidence that they can be a source of infection to other animals or to humans. We encourage you to speak to one of our veterinarians or technicians if you have questions or need more clarification. For up-to-date guidance on companion animals and the Coronavirus, please refer to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association website: https://wsava.org/ We will continue to provide updates as more information and guidelines become available. Sincerely, Your dedicated team at Cumberland Veterinary Clinic.
