Back when Josh (who is now 21) was a yellow belt. all these guys ended up becoming really good. I want black belts, not the worlds best orange belt. Greatness in anything takes time, and therefore patience. It is so easy to us a parents to want to micromanage our child’s success, but talent is overrated and usually surpassed by repetition and perfect practice. ... This month we will focus on the character concept, resilience. Today’s world, especially given widespread illness, bullying, racial injustice and financial hardship, has been far from idyllic. It’s easy to see why teachers, parents, coaches and other adults in the lives of children want to shield kids from all hardships. Of course, this isn’t possible and over-protecting children isn’t the answer to adversity. What is? Teaching resilience.... Resilience is the ability to bounce back from stress, challenge, trauma, failure and adversity. We see it when our kids pick themselves up after they fall and try again, audition again, make the 3rd attempt, and solve problems even though they could take the easy way out. Psychologist, Albert Ellis, taught that Activating events or Adversity could shape one’s Beliefs and lead to certain Consequences (or ABC). The question of how resilient a person will be is dependant, in this model, on B- our beliefs that show how we are interpreting the event. Are our beliefs rational and reasonable or negative, catastrophic, unhealthy and irrational? For example: A: I fell while doing X skill. B: I stink & won’t try again. C: I stop trying and quit. -or- A: I fell while doing X skill. B: I need practice & to get help. C: I practice, get help and get better at X skill. People who are resilient are problem-solvers. They look at tough situations and instead of asking why? or why me? they ask; how? as in, how can I move forward? They’re resilient. Of course sometimes there are events that are more than frustrating. They are traumatic. Many people have heard of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a diagnosis given to someone who has a mental health condition that’s triggered by a life-altering, profound event that is perceived as extremely negative. But there is also another outcome, according to researchers at the Resilience Lab at the Keck School of Medicine of USC called Post-Traumatic Growth. This refers to what happens when those who have these negative experiences but who find a way to thrive. It’s an illustration of resilience. #curranskarate #mapleridge #mapleridgebc #resilience #karate

I am confident because I am smart. Dominic boasts on his second karate class. Nice. I reply back. Anything else? Yes, I am going to work hard at earning my karate uniform today and also keep helping people. I am going to go and get my mom and my brother and sister a chair because that is kindness.... Ok, cool. I am really proud of how great you are already at kindness. I mention back. Thanks, I want to come to karate again tomorrow. He says as he carries a chair to his siblings. I think that sound like a great idea. I smile at him and help him with the other chair. #curranskarate #mapleridge #mapleridgebc #only1senseiron #confidence #karate #martialarts #kindness

When is the best age to start my child in martial arts? When they ask or show interest. If you notice they are playing martial arts video games, or karate chopping everything in the room...... might be a good idea. #curranskarate #mapleridge #mapleridgebc #only1senseiron #karatechamp

When you wear your work uniform to the grocery store people usually ask you about your job. In my case, my unique uniform usually prompts people to tell me their martial arts experiences. Yesterday at the grocery store while getting some food for my pet bunny on my way home from class, this happened. You are the karate guy. A woman says as she passes by with her son. ... Apparently so. I smile back. We tried martial arts before, he didn’t like it. I don’t remember you guys. Did you train with me? I ask. No, we went to a different school. Oh, so that doesn’t mean that you don’t like martial arts. That just means that you don’t like how that instructor or school teaches their classes. I reply. What do you mean? She asks. A good instructor is kind of like a chef. They all have access to the same ingredients, however it is what the chef chooses to do with those ingredients that makes the difference. Just because you go to a sushi restaurant and don’t like the way that it is prepared doesn’t mean that you don’t like sushi. You just don’t like the style and the way that the chef prepared it. I explain. Oh, that makes sense. I never thought about it like that. Do you have a card? She asks. Unfortunately, there are not many pockets in these funny outfits. I only have room for ninja stars in here. But I can text you my online schedule and we can book a time for you to come in and do a free one on one session with him so see if he likes our approach. I reply. That would be great, let’s do that. I send her my schedule and fist bump her son. There are so many chefs, and the choice you make could change your child’s CONFIDENCE for their entire life. Chose wisely. #curranskarate #only1senseiron #mapleridge #mapleridgebc #karate #martialarts #parenting
