Further to our Groundhog Day facts, the Germans watched a badger in Pennsylvania. The groundhog became the selected animal..... in Punxsutawny, now the well known name for the rituals location. This location is an Indian name.

NEAT NATURE NOTES about Groundhog Day. Groundhogs are woodchucks; the name came from the Indian word "Wojak". The first written reference about them occurred in 1841. The Delaware Indians felt the groundhogs were honorable ancestors. German settlers in the 1700's arrived in the USA bringing a tradition of celebration mid point between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. If there's sun on Feb. there will be 6 more weeks of wintery weather. ( A pretty safe bet in Canada - especially this year!).
