Detour designs, traffic accommodation strategies, and lift plans are all additional elements typically involved in a bridge project. If the crack looks like the Grand Canyon, you probably have an issue! We found this unique modification on a recent inspection we completed. The bracket had been cut in order to allow for the right hand beam to be installed and was not reconnected at all. Thankfully there had not been any movement over the many years, but it is very concerning to find a beam end held in place by nothing but gravity!! Do you have a deck you'd like inspected? Drones are an integral part of modern civil design. The ability to review accurate and high resolution photos of a site have always been invaluable, given the fallibility of human memory. Now we can also include overhead photos, which used to be either quite costly or potentially seriously out of date. Theory & models are great, but seeing the real things matters just as much!! A critical part of any structural design is how the components connect together. This is a critical connection between two parts of a bridge girder. As a result, we have bolts connecting both the web and flanges. While these ones haven't been tightened fully as this photo is from a shop mock-up, in the field each individual bolt will be tightened, and tested to ensure it holds and meets project requirements!! You may have a problem if you can stick a 2.5" pocket knife into your beam! This is an all to common thing we see, where beams have rotted out due to water entry and poor maintenance. Thankfully in this case it is only 4ft off the ground, but this could be very bad if it was at a greater height!! We highly recommend completing full yearly inspections. An engineer is not needed for this. Simply go out with a hammer and a pocketknife or screw driver and check the framing for weak spots. Could save you a lot of headache in the future.

We love seeing how past designer approached a problem. Timber is an extremely useful material, and has been used in bridge building for millennia. A manhole is a great tool to allow for access and monitoring, without having to dig up your parking lot! This sanitary manhole was installed in order to allow for a 90 degree bend as well as allow for a size change in the pipe. We completed the inspection for it on a civil design project we completed this summer. From sanitary to storm, we civil design is a core aspect of what CVL does. If your wall looks like it could fire an arrow due to bowing, you may have an issue! Unfortunately this is a not infrequent issue that we come across, especially in residential homes. In this particular case, there was no vertical rebar in the wall. This meant that there was not enough strength to hold the fill back!! At some points, the wall bowed out up to 4" (100mm) from vertical!!! Even with the lacking rebar, how do you think that could have been mitigated against?

If you design it, they may not build it! A reality of the consulting/design world is that not everything that gets designed gets built. From conceptual design all the way to Issued for Construction documents, there is never a 100% guarantee that something will get built. Things change, resources are reallocated, funding disappears and people change their minds. Being accepting that you can do everything right and still not see the finished project is a reality. This rendering is of a cool large pergola we designed for the Kananaskis Nordic Spa. They decided to go in a difference direction in the end, but we still think it looks pretty cool!!!

Typical sanitary mains and services in Canada are gravity fed, meaning that a slope is required in order to ensure that the effluent (gross bathroom water) flows.
