Due to weather conditions and turbidity in Comox Lake and the Puntledge River, the Boil Water Notice for the Comox Valley Water System remains in place. This drone photo was taken yesterday and shows turbidity entering the lake from Perseverance Creek - one of the contributing factors during this storm event. Our crews are working hard and updates will be issued as they are available. Thank you to all water users for your patience and understanding. Here’s hoping for sunnier days ahead!

To those who don’t take COVID-19 seriously, I wish I could show you what my team and I have seen. The pace of this disease is unbelievable. I see patients come... in who feel a little unwell and within a day they’re on life support, experiencing hypoxemia (low blood oxygen). I see people who are otherwise healthy, in good shape, become gravely ill and deteriorate within hours. And I’m hearing from patients who’ve seemingly recovered, become so-called COVID-19 ‘long-haulers’. Five months later, they’re struggling. But I have reason to hope. Soon, I’ll shake my colleagues’ hands again and thank them for their courage. I’ll have the full team at my side again for critical interventions, during resuscitations. And [laughs] we won’t have headaches or sore ears from wearing PPE for 12 hours straight. And we’ll all meet with our family and friends again. I can't quite believe it has been a year since the first case in BC. In preparation for its arrival, we burned the midnight oil because we could see the crisis escalating elsewhere. There was a general feeling of anxiety. There was also a tremendous feeling of unity. Everyone, from nursing to housekeeping, was crucial in our efforts to prepare. They are all still working so hard 12 months later. To everyone who’s struggling right now I say, please be patient. We’ll get there. I know it is tough. But right now, your efforts will make all the difference to our ICUs in the days and weeks ahead. This is unlike anything we’ve ever faced. But we’ll get through it, I promise you. There will be a time to come together again and celebrate. Dr. Ahmad has been a clinician for 15 years, specializing in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. He is the Department Head of Emergency and Critical Care at Island Health.

Social and community gatherings have been nixed until the new year. You can grieve this loss. It’s been a tough year and we all want to be with our loved ones, ...especially during the holidays. But right now, it’s just not safe to have people in our homes that we don’t live with or aren’t in our core bubble, if living solo. There are still activities you can enjoy and some interactions are necessary. Take a look! and what you can do: Getting outside! Go for a walk or a bike ride. Choose less populated areas and keep your distance from others on trails and beaches. Hanging out with friends on ZOOM or other virtual platforms to keep in touch and celebrate Carpooling kids to and from school Grandparents, co-parents or friends providing support for child care or other essential needs Support group meetings like AA or NA Drive in/drop-off events like toy drives and seasonal light displays where you stay in your car and what you should avoid: Having friends or extended family to your home Hosting a get-together outdoors or in your backyard Playdates with children In-person religious gatherings and worship services. Individual activities like contemplation or personal prayer are OK. Receptions for weddings, baptisms or funerals We get through this and we will see the other side. Please continue to work together to protect our communities by following all the public health orders here: http://ow.ly/OQhQ50CJkPr

Its Septic Awareness Week. Protect your system by practicing water conservation. Low flow appliances, water saving devices and efficient water use practices can improve the function of your system by allowing for a longer separation and treatment time. Its also important to avoid using multiple water-using appliances at the same time or back-to-back to prevent too much water from entering your system over a short period of time. For more information on proper care of your septic system, visit www.comoxvalleyrd.ca/septic
