A new bridge is going to be installed soon in the Crow Wing Trail. We are anxious to see pedestrians crossing this 23m long structure.

New Pedestrian Bridge Closes Important Gap Today, an important gap in the Crow Wing Trail is being closed as a new pedestrian bridge officially opens. This $250,000 project over the Joubert Creek in the RM of De Salaberry is the culmination of ongoing efforts to close gaps in the Trans Canada Trail across Canada.... In 1999, the Crow Wing Trail was registered as the section of the Trans Canada Trail from Winnipeg to the Canada-U.S. Border. The founding municipalities of Ritchot, De Salaberry, Franklin, St-Pierre-Jolys and Emerson were joined a few years later by the Town of Niverville and Roseau River First Nation. An 1887 provincial map was used to lay out the modern-day route for this ox-cart trail used in the mid-1800`s. Municipal road allowances, dikes, bush trails and parks were linked to form a continuous trail. The Crow Wing Trail officially opened in 2006 and since then, Association volunteers from these seven local governments have worked together to maintain and improve this 200-km length of trail. The bridge being unveiled today is the 6 th bridge installed/restored on the Crow Wing Trail. It is also part of a greenway project something Trans Canada Trail supports and encourages making use of municipal road allowances closed to cars and trucks. The new trail sections require more maintenance but the result is a safer and more enjoyable experience. Last but not least, with this closed gap, our Association can now launch two new projects. Firstly, the Crow Wing Trail Camino Project, an international project that will connect our part of the world with the historical Camino Trail in Spain; and secondly, the Crow Wing Trail Passport, which will encourage users to complete our 200 km of trail one section at a time. Once all eleven sections have been stamped by local businesses, a Certificate of Completion will be provided to the users as proof of their accomplishment. #easternmb #exploremb #thegreattrail #crowwingtrail #bonjourmanitoba

It has been 15 years since the renovated Senkiw Bridge was opened. We can not account how many people have enjoyed both sides of the river, and how many tubers have passed underneath, but I am sure that there are many happy stories that have been possible because it is there. We hope and continue working to see the bridge there for other 15 years. Congratulations to anyone who has helped CWTA to achieve this anniversary.

Some Damage is Being Done by All-Terrain Vehicle Traffic Let be good neighbors and respect the space of each other. ATVs might be fun, but they can also cause a lot of damage if they are not use properly. Hikers and bikers can not enjoy trails if ATVs have marked surface making a soup of mud, clay and dirt. This problem has been very hard close to Emerson. We invite you to read the whole article following this link: Southeast Journal May14th news paper

Our friends of Nature Manitoba have sent a email saying that they cancel their outdoor programs following guidelines set out by Canada Public Health Services and other agencies. This are some of the recommendation you should follow if you decide to be outdoors. - Activities should be done individually or only within family/household groups - Activities are done when and where it is possible to keep to the social distancing guidelines of staying 2 meters apart from other people - Anyone who is ill, or has returned from travelling within the last 14 days, stays home

Time for another update from Race HQ; there are a few more details that we wanted to update you on. First, a reminder that a registration system email went out ...this past Saturday to all registrants. In case you are registered but did not receive it, we asked if any of you need a parking pass to leave your car at The Forks while you are out on course. Passes are $10/calendar day so you may need to estimate how long you will be on course. As a reminder, we need to know by tomorrow night, so if you haven't already done so, please let us know if you need a parking pass and for how many days (contact us at: [email protected]). After tomorrow, you will have to arrange long term parking on your own if you want to leave a vehicle at the start/finish (note our passes are discounted by about 50% of standard parking fees). Next, a quick report on course conditions. As of this past weekend we have scouted the entire route and the general consensus is that course conditions are mostly firm and fast. Since then we have had a little more snow but it also warmed up and melted. Conditions are cooling off as of tonight so the original prediction of a fast and firm course is what you are likely going to find on race day. There are a few areas of note that had conditions we wanted to mention: 1. The Forks start/finish is different this year. The river trails are closed so we are going over Main street at the cross-walk. The start of each event will begin with a neutral start to get everyone across together safely. 2. The area near the first checkpoint on Fraser Rd is icy. We would recommend staying near the edge of the road where snow has collected for improved traction. There are some other icy sections on gravel roads as well so please be aware and exercise caution. 3. For those that are taking on the 160km run or 200km bike, the river section South of Crystal Spring has had traffic on it so there are tracks to follow (sled/quad) they are a bit chunky but the surface will likely be firm due to the cooler weather on its way. There was a section with a bit of overflow on the river from one of the local farms, but with cooler temps this will have frozen solid and could potentially be icy but will otherwise be no problem to navigate (we rode it this past week and it was solid). One more thing to note: we had a last minute re-route due to an ongoing major construction project. The GPX files have been updated and the links on our website in the race bible will provide you with the updated route. If you had already downloaded the route GPX file, please replace it with the new one as of today. The cue sheets have been updated and are going through the final revision stage at the moment. They will be posted by tomorrow at the latest. Hope your final preparations are going well, there will be one more pre-race communication coming with details for the race day schedule.

Did you know that Tourond Creek is located a stones throw away from the Crow Wing Trail / Chemin St-Paul? The Crow Wing Trail is part of the Trans Canada Trai...l in Manitoba, connecting Winnipeg to Emerson at the Canada-U.S. Border. It closely follows the route of a Red River Ox-Cart Trail used in the mid-1800’s. Today’s trail is a 193-km multi-use path adventure through diverse geography and friendly communities. Whether you are a resident or a visitor, this is one of the great community assets of Tourond Creek. #closetowhatmatters A&S Homes Bluestone Homes Inc. Lets talk about trash Here is one problem I am observing over and over again and that really is a downer, on trails that are allowed to be used by ATVs and sno...wmobiles I always find beer cans and empty cigarette packs alongside in the bush or right on the trail or at lookouts. Those who litter aren't outdoor enthusiasts neither are they nature lovers. They are ignorant and disrespectful towards others and disconnected from nature. They are exactly what I am holding in my hand: trash. #sorrynotsorry #dontlitter #takeyourtrashout

I started the Crow Wing trail yesterday. I am so glad I pushed to finish the stretch along the Red River floodway even though it already got late but I knew a s...torm will bring new snow. It stormed all night so my sleep was rather meh. I am staying put probably all day. I just went outside to fix my guy lines and remove some snow as its wet and heavy. I was drenched in less than 5 minutes. The wind is not slowing down. And I am just on the outskirts of a major low that came last night from Colorado and remains all day. The snow was sticky this morning (great for building a snow man) but has become slushy and wet as it's quite mild outside (-1C). The gusts are brutal and make me worry a bit about my tent. I hope it stands strong. I am worried because I made a mistake. When I settled last night the wind blew from north-east. I contemplated which direction to put my tent up. I put my lenghtsside towards east to west and knew in my guts that this was wrong, and I did it anyway. North wind is now blowing heavily against the lenghtsside of my tent which I could have had avoided. I could have had a much smaller impact on my tent had I put it lengthwise in north-south direction. I went outside to remove the heavy snow pressing with the wind against my fly. This can be an interesting day. I already learn a lot from this. #crowwingtrail #theGreatTrail #Manitoba #canada

Crow Wing Trail / Chemin St-Paul 10.08.2019

In order to move we need rhythm. In order to find words we need melody. In order to dance we need motion. I am sitting on a chair in my hotel room. My feet on ...the seat. My head between my knees. My face held by my hands. Shadow crawls up the large Spruce outside my window as the sun begins to set. Warm light shines on the upper part of the tree that is set before a darkening blue sky. I don't like to see the day go. I want to hold on to it for a little longer. The nights are lonely here now that there are people around. I close my eyes while listening to Pink Floyd trying to find my way into writing. The intro of "Shine on you crazy diamond" allows me to hand my heart to the ravens to get it lifted and carried above tree tops back to the Seine River. Back to December 21st, the shortest day and at the same time one of the brightest nights. The solstice was about to give birth to a new sun under the cold warmth of the full moon. After I watched the sun setting behind a tree line - a rather short spectacle that night - I took my wheels off and left Hwy 11 pulling my sled up Ruff Rd, a small cottage road. I walked like a shadow as I decided not to switch my headlamp on. A spot of bright light shined onto the path in the distance. I expected people, a home. I wasn't sure if that excites me or not. That feeling didn't matter for long .As I came closer I stood in the clear cut aisle of Hydro power lines letting the moon's light spot me, undistracted. I turned into an even smaller path that took me to an opening and to the step banks of a river which's water was running into the Seine river under its thick white frozen blanket. I was hoping to get down to the Seine river but the bush was so thick that I decided to pitch my tent on top of the step banks of that smaller river. I shoveled snow as I did not have my snowshoes back then and pitched my tent under the light of the full moon. My headlamp still switched off. I wanted to hold off to the use of artificial light until I really did need to use it. I found gravel ground under the snow blanket which made screwing my ice pegs into the ground somewhat difficult but I succeeded nonetheless. I boiled water for dinner. Heard a loud crack down at the river. Wondered what it was. Wasn't afraid. Instead remembered those moments back in Newfoundland when cracking that loud and that close took my breathe away and made my heart beat stronger. Not anymore. My mind was calm. I originally planned to set up a fire but I had no mood to sit outside in the cold. Instead I crawled in my sleeping bag. I was warm. I was peaceful out there in the wild. I felt almost protected by the brightness and mystic of the moon. The moon was reassuring. There I was trying to fit into this wildness as 'trying to fit in' is such a thing, so I had learnt. (I was never that great with it. Rebelled.) But this wildness is good. Don't mistake it with craziness. Wildness is excepting existence as is. Nothing more. Without anybody telling me where my place is on this planet. There is no history in nature. Just rhythm, change, connection and melody. See more

With a break from the cold weather and the snow returning, it’s time to go check out some more of the trail! Date: Saturday, February 2nd, 2019 Time: 9:00am... Location: Ridgeville, the plan is to meet in the parking lot of the hall at the South end of town on the East side of Main St. if their lot is clear. Otherwise we will park in town near the checkpoint location (The Club) on Main St. Purpose: To scout the Actif Epica course between Ridgeville and Emerson along the Crow Wing Trail, we are planning to ride the route backwards from Ridgeville toward Emerson and go as far as we can, time permitting. Who: The Trail Crew (Pete and Dan) will be riding at a slow rolling pace (on fat bikes) and would love it if you brought ANY type of bike and joined them (bring friends on bikes too!). The Plan: To go have a look at this section of the route, take a few pictures and enjoy a fun, sociable ride-out from Ridgeville to Emerson and back. Depending on the weather (it is supposed to snow), we might take a shorter return route. The total distance will be kept around 40km and we will roll out at 9am and estimate the total ride time to be somewhere between 3-4 hours depending on trail conditions. In case you are late setting off, you can follow along with the blue-and-white-arrow, Crow Wing Trail markers and catch up with us along the route as we will be moving at a comfortable pace and stopping to take pictures now and then. Also, there will likely be a post ride discussion over coffee/food at a local establishment should you feel so inclined. Important Note: All participants join us at their own risk (e.g. please be safe, wear appropriate winter riding clothing, a helmet, bring blinky lights for improved visibility, enough food and water for the ride and a basic repair kit). Citing a famous quote, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU, so please respect the nature of a winter riding adventure, it can be unforgiving. Hope to see you on Saturday!

Just a friendly reminder folks, registration closes at the end of the day on Monday, February 4th. If you are planning to come and join us, be sure to register by then!

Crow Wing Trail / Chemin St-Paul 24.06.2019

This past Sunday, three of us met up in Nivervile. The ambient temps were cold compared to previous outings, around -32C or -25.6F with a slight wind out of the... South East. Leaving Niverville and heading North toward St. Adolphe, the plan was to scout some updates to the route this year. Our planned change is to avoid crossing hwy 200 as often and improve the flow out of St. Adolphe to simplify navigation through town. The route to St. Adolphe is fairly straight forward and takes a few turns to get to town, following along the dike and dropping in at the curling club (our checkpoint location). Leaving the checkpoint we will continue North this year and follow along St. Adolphe road, crossing hwy 210 before resuming travel on the dike. Conveniently, the dike wraps around the town and takes a sharp right and goes past the public works building before re-connecting with the original route and heading North to Twin Creek Road. By the time we finished investigating the updates, the wind was starting to pick up from the South East so we decided to head back as that was going to be a head wind for our return trip. Fortunately the coffee shop in Niverville was open and we all enjoyed the chance to thaw out indoors before heading home. Next week we are taking a break as it is the Arrowhead weekend. Good luck to all that are taking part this year! We will be back at it in February so if you are looking to get in a ride on the route, there will be at least one more opportunity to come join us before race day! Actif Epica Trail Crew

Looks like we have some real winter weather on our hands. Assuming you are as much a fan of cold weather as we are, why not join us for the third in our series ...of Actif Epica recon rides! Date: Sunday, January 20th, 2019 Time: 9:00am Location: Niverville, we will meet in the parking lot of our checkpoint (the Arena, on Arena Rd.). Purpose: To scout the Actif Epica course between Niverville and St. Adolphe along the Crow Wing Trail, we are planning to continue North of St. Adolphe toward the floodway but will keep the ride distance manageable. Who: The Trail Crew (Pete and Dan) will be riding at a slow rolling pace (on fat bikes) and would love it if you brought ANY type of bike and joined them (bring friends on bikes too!). The Plan: To go have a look at this section of the route, take a few pictures and enjoy a fun, sociable ride-out from Niverville to St. Adolphe and beyond. We will return the same way, following the Crow Wing Trail. The total distance will be kept around 40km at most. We will roll out at 9am and estimate the total ride time to be somewhere between 3-4 hours depending on trail conditions. Another scouting ride is in the books. We lucked out with weather again, finding a strong South East wind that was bringing stormy weather and a slight warming ...trend. Six of us met up at the St. Malo arena and set off South towards Senkiw. The ride there was fairly uneventful with a well traveled road surface near town that made for relatively speedy progress. The first section of trail that is closed to motorized vehicles did not disappoint with the usual stomping through deep snow, slowing things down a bit. We stopped briefly to admire the horses and then pressed on towards the town site of Senkiw. Shortly after resuming our ride on gravel a local pup came out of a yard nearby and started chasing us. Jokingly, we assumed that the dog would turn back at the end of it’s property line. However, this was not the case and it joined us the entire way to the suspension bridge and back, becoming our new ride mascot in the process. The field section and trails leading to the suspension bridge had largely blown in and were mostly a walk as well (except for our new furry friend who ran and made it look easy). The return trip was largely with the wind and we had to locate the dog owner’s residence and get them to take the dog inside or risk bringing it back to St. Malo with us. Later in the evening was when the storm hit and we have since had another significant snowfall so course conditions are shaping up nicely. Thanks again to all that came out, it was great riding with you! Next week is the 2WR Falcon race so we are going to take a break for a week and will resume the week after, stay tuned if you are looking to get out and/or see more of the trail conditions. Who: The Trail Crew will be riding at a slow rolling pace (on fat bikes) and would love it if you brought ANY type of bike and joined them (bring friends on bikes too!). The Plan: To go have a look at this section of the route, take a few pictures and enjoy a fun, sociable ride-out from St. Malo to the Senkiw Suspension Bridge and then return back the same way, following the Crow Wing Trail. The total distance is approximately 37km. We will roll out at 9am and estimate the total ride time to be somewhere between 3-4 hours. In case you are late setting off, you can follow along with the blue-and-white-arrow, Crow Wing Trail markers and catch up with us along the route as we will be moving at a comfortable pace and stopping to take pictures now and then. Just a friendly reminder, if you are thinking about coming to join us in February, the earlybird registration deadline for Actif Epica is tonight. Have a safe and happy New Year!

Crow Wing Trail / Chemin St-Paul 31.03.2019

What a great weather weekend, we lucked out and had some fun in the snow this past Sunday! The weather was good, close to -10C (14F), with a moderate wind from ...the North West (conveniently, mostly the direction for our outbound ride). Leaving St. Pierre-Jolys, the route follows along Rat River Rd. and was in good shape, of course we found that out after letting air out of our tires in the very snowy parking lot at the start. That warranted a quick stop to refill some of the air to avoid over heating and working too hard. Once we turned off onto the quieter sections heading toward Crystal Spring, a bit more care was required, having only seen a few tire-tracks. In the weeks prior, we had warmer weather and some rain mixed in. That meant that underneath the snow there was a thin coating of ice, limiting the available traction in some places. The trail section leading into Crystal Spring was not one of them, and they had seen little to no recent traffic (foot/deer). We made it around the loop in sight of Crystal Spring and then turned back to enjoy a bit of tailwind on our return trip. Thanks to all that came out, it was great to see you and share the ride! The recent snow has significantly improved course conditions. We’ll be back at it again in the New Year so stay tuned if you missed out on this one. Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season! First day of winter is tomorrow and snow is in the forecast... that can only mean one thing. Time to go scout the trail! Come join us for the first in our serie...s of Actif Epica recon rides. Date: Sunday, December 23rd, 2018 Time: 9:00am Location: St. Pierre-Jolys, we will meet in the parking lot of Le Routier restaurant. Purpose: To scout the Actif Epica course between St. Pierre-Jolys and Crystal Spring Colony along the Crow Wing Trail and on our return trip we are going to check out possible detours onto the Rat River. Who: The Trail Crew (Pete and Dan) will be riding at a slow rolling pace (on fat bikes) and would love it if you brought ANY type of bike and joined them (bring friends on bikes too!). The Plan: To go have a look at this section of the route, take a few pictures and enjoy a fun, sociable ride-out from St. Pierre-Jolys to Crystal Spring Colony and then return back the same way, following the Crow Wing Trail with a possible detour along the Rat River depending on conditions. Hope to see you on Sunday!

It has been awhile, how is your fall season going? We still dream of winter and getting out on the course. Speaking of which... New for this year, we are hostin...g a 54km distance event. For those of you interested in trying something a bit shorter than our classic or long distance events, this is a perfect introduction into the winter ultra scene and/or good for a time-crunched option. We are offering both a bike and running category for this distance and the event will start in Niverville and finish at the Forks. You will pass through two checkpoints along the way to the finish (St. Adolphe and The University of Manitoba). For the 54km bike option, we have a couple of additional things. First, if you would like to rent a fat bike, we have a deal with White Pine Bicycle Co. (https://www.whitepinebicycleco.com/) where you can rent a fat bike for the event and since they are located at The Forks, you can return it when you reach the finish. In addition, if any cyclist would prefer a no-drop chaperoned ride, one of our team will be leading a ride on the course from Niverville to The Forks for those that would prefer not to race but still join us for a winter adventure. More details can be found in the race bible on our website (actifepi.ca), our registration page (https://www.webscorer.com/register?raceid=155624) and of course please contact us if you have any questions ([email protected])

Come to The Forks to learn about The GREAT TRAIL. The new signage has been officially installed yesterday. As you can see in the pictures officials and a representation of our board was there in spite of cold and snow.
