FYI. Researchers have been working on this since 2019. UNB’s Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management has begun a research project on the wild turkey in New Brunswick. The project is collecting observations of wild turkeys from people across the province. The project seeks to know where and when people are seeing wild turkeys in New Brunswick.... People are encouraged to submit their observations to the NB WildTurkey Research Facebook page. Once data are collected, the researchers will produce a distribution map of wild turkey populations, and develop a predictive model of the survival of wild turkeys. It is well known that wild turkeys have increased in New Brunswick. The project’s overall goal is to determine where they are, and then predict where they can persist, based on various factors, such as food supply, snow depth, ice, and future climate change. To date, there have been 64 submissions of sightings of wild turkeys in New Brunswick this winter - a total of 804 birds reported in groups ranging from 2 to 50 birds. Homeowners and members of naturalist groups and the Canadian Wild Turkey Federation have contributed their observations. The project seeks observations in all areas of the province by all citizens. The project is being conducted by Masters Student Ed Czerwinski, RPF, and co-supervised by Dr's. Graham Forbes and Joe Nocera. The project is supported, in part by the NB Wildlife Trust Fund. To submit your observations go to NB Wild Turkey Research Facebook Page, and find the link to JotForm, where you can contribute to this study. HUNTERS NEEDED FOR WEST NILE VIRUS SURVEY in RUFFED GROUSE in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia RECHERCHE DE CHASSEURS POUR L’ENQUÊTE POUR DÉTERMINER L’EXPOSITION a...u VIRUS DU NIL OCCIDENTAL chez la GÉLINOTTE HUPPÉE au Nouveau-Brunswick et en Nouvelle-Écosse This study aims to determine the number, level, and distribution of ruffed grouse exposed to West Nile Virus (WNV) in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. We are recruiting hunters who this fall/winter (2020). Participants will be provided with filter strips for blood collection and a postage-paid envelope for submitting samples. As an incentive, following the closing of grouse season, all those who submit samples will automatically be entered into a draw for a prize (generously provided by the Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, Challenger Ammunition, and the CWTF) with an approximate retail value of $660 (CAD). Thank you for helping us conserve, enhance, and protect New Brunswick and Nova Scotia’s wildlife and habitat. To participate / pour participer, contact Dr. Amanda MacDonald at [email protected] (Nova Scotia), or / ou Dr. Tadeusz Splawinski at [email protected] (New Brunswick).
