We are still battling serious outbreaks in northern Manitoba and hospitals still dealing with many patients requiring intensive care. Let’s be very cautious and protect each other as restrictions ease.

Cynthia Carr Epidemiologist 14.01.2021

Make just one new goal that you can focus on for you. Connect with others virtually and write down your journey to your goal. We have to stay apart but that doesn’t mean we can’t support each other in reaching new goals.

While we learn of vaccine delays in supply chain, remember to keep all other tools in place! Small correction - I said 15% of hospitalizations end up in ICU, not 50 ... 15 is still very serious and we need to continue to protect each other. https://battlefordsnow.com//epidemiologist-looks-at-covid/

Now with a highly contagious variant found in Canada, we must work harder than ever to push back against the spread. The danger of this disease and the ability for it to spread is not just theory, it is fact. It is not about who you know or who you trust - it is about giving the virus yet another body to thrive in. Don’t let this happen. Join me on CTV at 7:50 a.m. Friday where we will talk about this. Message if you have any questions. ... https://www.cbc.ca//covid19-deaths-cases-manitoba-1.586314

It appears at least one in four who have been infected with COVID-19, even when illness is mild, are at risk for long term health impacts. Stay safe and do your part to stop the spread.

Cynthia Carr Epidemiologist 10.12.2020

Even when there is something we really want to do, we have to continue to be patient and do it safely. Social distancing even while together, will continue to be an important tool in the tool kit, especially as we start to re-open economies.

Cynthia Carr Epidemiologist 24.11.2020

While we continue to work together to stop the spread of COVID-19, it’s important that we take care of our mental health. This can be reaching out to friends or professionals, exercise, read a book or just grab a snack and watch your favourite movie. This is my rescue cat doing just that.... and watching her put a smile on my face as well. Check your local government website for lists of support in your area that are available virtually and don’t forget that there are some great Apps as well.

Tracking the numbers day to day - a picture really is worth 1,000 words.... Look at the increase in cases after Thanksgiving Weekend (October 11) - and how long it took for us to "settle" the increase... but we certainly can see good news in December - let's keep pushing back down the mountain together!!!

Cynthia Carr Epidemiologist 04.11.2020

Positive test rates may still appear to be high but remember in Manitoba, only those with symptoms should be tested - so it may be that we have fewer people being tested, but proportionally the rate is about the same as previously, even though numbers are going down. Let's keep up the positive energy, working together, and push to fewer cases in 2021!! https://globalnews.ca//manitoba-coronavirus-covid-19-case/

I am terrible at trivia, but pretty good at graphs... Manitobans it seems like we are fighting back in the right direction. It is not easy to stay apart but the more we continue to work through this, there faster we get to better days. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions I can answer for you (as long as they are not trivia!!).

It is normal for viruses to mutate; and often the mutations don’t mean much. However, viruses can mutate and become faster and stronger at spreading, they can become more dangerous in terms of making people sicker. However, they need a living body in which this occurs ... the more we stay apart and keep cases down, the more we fight against the virus mutating and becoming better at spreading amongst us.

Cynthia Carr Epidemiologist 29.07.2020

Stay safe everyone! Happy Holidays.

Cynthia Carr Epidemiologist 24.07.2020

Ugly sweater virus mutations. Yes viruses mutate all the time and this one has as well. Good news - doesn’t seem to impact vaccine effectiveness at this point. Bad news - it can become quicker to spread, target other groups, or become more virulent. Remember - the more we stop the spread, the less the virus can mutate. Happy Holidays! #covid19manitoba

This is a population and a group that we want as much as possible, for social well-being and educational achievement, to keep in school, said Carr. So this particular test, because it’s a PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction)-type test with that better sensitivity and specificity to identify people who are asymptomatic, this would be the population to try that in. Carr said it could also help health officials better understand how the virus is spreading. It looks like there’s ...a low positive test rate within schools, said Carr. We’re still learning about the science of the disease among students, so even if just teachers are involved we’re still learning about: do younger people transmit the virus well, or at all, and, of course, the teacher is in the age group where we do show symptoms we do get sick. Cynthia Carr Epidemiologist 02.07.2020

It’s not the magic bullet, distribution will be a challenge & our immune system needs to react optimally to the vaccine to use it but it looks like good qualit...y and safe vaccines may be on the way for 2021. Remember ... 1. We don’t know yet exactly what 95% effectivemeans as the data are not yet publicly released (it can mean many things from stopping the infection to reducing diseases severity & can have very different efficacy in different age and health status of people). And we don’t know how long this reported effectiveness lasts. We don’t know how many people were in the trial and are part of this first early report. 2. This is 2 dose vaccine, 4 weeks apart. The current 95% efficacy reporting refers to 7 days after the 2nd dose. So it will be a minimum of FIVE weeks from first inoculation before anyone should consider themselves protected from Covid-19. 3. There is a difference between efficacy which are results under very controlled lab conditions, including who participated in the studies and appropriate storage of the vaccine (an issue with extreme temp requirements) and real life effectiveness in all population groups. Right now we only have a very high level efficacy point in time report from manufacturers. This is not the same as all data about how it will work in real life conditions. However, every vaccine starts at this stage and we will learn more as they are rolled out. 4. Given what we know about other vaccines, 95% seems very high but it depends on what exactly is measured. I do not want to dissuade anyone from any vaccine but influenza vaccine effectiveness is in range of 40-60% depending on age group, and the most effective are for chicken pox and measles at 90% but all still contribute to saving lives whether through stopping spread, alleviating severity or duration of illness. So great news of progress but still lots of need ahead for us to stay strong and do our part to stop the spread by social distancing, masks .. you know the drill!!!

As we approach flu season, we have to do whatever we can to limit its impact at the same time as we're battling COVID-19. Winnipeg-based epidemiologist Cynthia Carr, founder of EPI research, says symptoms of the flu and COVID-19 are similar, which may cause some issues going into this year’s flu season. The problem is those two things co-occurring and the impact on the health system and the impact on your body if you get infected with both, she said.... It can make it challenging for someone to know, ‘could this be COVID or could this be influenza?’, because there is many symptoms that are similar. She said while the two viruses share some symptoms, the recovery is different, which can lead to a much bigger impact on the health care system. We know that influenza-like illness accounts for about one-in-four emergency department visits during the flu season. It is a very serious impact on our health system, she said, adding an older person with COVID-19 may be in the hospital for two weeks. Carr said they are also helping with staff contact tracing for Revera and enhancing its capacity. She added that the hope is contact tracing inside facilities could stop outbreaks sooner. "The faster staff can be notified that they might have been a contact of another staff member or a resident, the faster they can monitor themselves," said Carr. She said it could also help the staff be more careful with people in their homes. https://winnipeg.ctvnews.ca/red-cross-called-in-to-help-two

The more that there is community-based spread, the fewer the options are for targeted approaches and restrictions without going back to a total shutdown, Carr said. But Carr said she doesn’t believe imposing further lockdowns on peoples economic and social well-being are the answer. We’re sabotaging those businesses and people that are paying the price because they are the ones that have been targeted as part of the solution to stop the spread., she said.... It’s up to people to fight COVID-19 by reducing their interactions and practising physical distancing, she said. Winnipeg-based epidemiologist Cynthia Carr noted the difference between a clinical cure, which is when a person no longer exhibits COVID-19 symptoms and a pathogen cure, which is when a person no longer tests positive for the virus. We often stop taking medication when we think we feel better, but we have not actually rid our body completely of the bacteria, she said. (Trump) might be feeling better and something like steroids definitely would help with breathing, but ...that doesn’t mean virus left the body and it doesn’t mean the steroids for example will continue to work as you usually ‘step down’ very carefully off a steroid dose. https://q107.com//73833/coronavirus-recovery-length-trump/

Winnipeg epidemiologist Cynthia Carr says social bubbles can still work in areas of the country where community spread is low. But they’re no longer effective as harm reduction measures where cases are rising rapidly. Getting people to disband their social bubbles can be tricky though, especially for those who had difficulty with isolation in the early stages of the pandemic. It’s almost sort of a reset emotionally and mentally isn’t it? You have to go back to that situati...on, Carr said. Part of the challenge is knowing how it felt. It was lonely and anxiety-inducing. But the reality is in some of these cities we’re seeing pretty quick increases (in case counts). We need to bring that back under control, otherwise this exponential spread could increase pretty quickly. https://www.terracestandard.com//experts-worry-social-res/ #covid19 #covid19canada #staysafe #winnipeg #cynthiacarr #epidemiologist

"We know that during peak flu season, at least 25 per cent of emergency room visits every day here in Winnipeg are flu-related, which can be 200-300 visits a day," she said, "We don't want to add to that with COVID-19."... The best way to reduce the strain, according to Carr, is to get the flu shot. "It will be imperative this year that we in the vaccine. Fall is near, which means flu season is too. Due to the current climatethe best chance to stay healthy is by helping your immune system keep working the best it can! Many of you have concerns about what reopening schools will look like amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic. If that isn’t enough to worry about, flu season is quick to follow. Read below for our top proactive suggestions to help you optimize your health! Thinking of getting the flu shot? Here’s why you should. Wh...ile we know it is rarely perfect, the flu vaccine is safe, free (your tax dollars paid for it, so go get it!) and recommended for all Manitobans age 6 months and older. * The Flu Vaccine can STOP the spread of the virus (best case scenario you don’t get sick), or at least help your immune system with advance warning so that it can react quicker against the virus. * This means you may get less sick than you would have without the vaccine (shorter time, less likely to end up in hospital, less likely to die). * You can get your flu shot at your local pharmacy, public health clinics and your doctor. * Young children and older adults are at greatest risk for poor health outcomes but everyone is at risk. * The flu shot will not protect against COVID-19 but the less your body is fighting other infections, the better off you will be if you are exposed to this or other viruses. In addition to the Flu Vaccine, we recommend a strong focus on eating healthy, taking a multi vitamin as well as getting enough rest and exercise. If you're a smoker and able to quit smoking, now is the time. Think of the Flu Vaccine as the coach and your immune system needs to be healthy enough to follow the next play! #covid19 #epidemiology #fluseason #flushot #stayhealthy #tipsonstayingsafe #COVID19canada
