This Fundraiser call for Filipinos and Filipino friends all over the world is being organized by Surrey Philippine Independence Day Society (SPIDS), a non-profit long-time organization of Filipinos in Surrey, British Columbia Canada in partnership with the current Filipino community group in North Vancouver and the advocacy group Global Pinoy Diaspora Canada (GPDC), based in Vancouver. The proceeds of this fundraiser will be sent directly to the Canadian Red Cross (CRC) pendi...ng a specific Typhoon Appeal for Vamco and/or Goni for the Philippines. No amount of money will be sent through the solicitor or any of the organizers. SPIDS has a standing record of 100% proceeds fundraising for Canadian Red Cross in 2011 and 2013 (in a 3 collaborative projects) respectively, which helped to yield in excess of $178,000 towards disaster relief around the world. The North Vancouver Filipino group together with SPIDS and photographer friends solicited $69,000 in 2013 and also sent to Cdn Red Cross. This was also matched 100% by the Canadian government. GPDC co-organized a fundraising event for the Taal Volcano Eruption Victims last February and proceeds were sent directly to a non-profit org in the Philippines. They also donated to CRC in 2012 for Typhoon Washi fundraising effort. On November 1, Super Typhoon Goni struck the Philippines with sustained winds of 225 kilometers (140 mph) and gusts as high as 310 kilometers (195 mph). The typhoon killed more than 20 people and displaced more than 517,000. On November 11, 2020, Typhoon Vamco made its first landfall at 11 p.m, with sustained winds of 150 kilometers (90 miles) per hour and peak intensity winds equivalent to a category 2 hurricane. The typhoon cut power to millions, caused more than 350,000 evacuations, and killed 67 people as of November 15th update. The country has been hit directly or partially by 8 different storms since the start of October 2020, and Typhoon Vamco is the 21st storm to hit the country this year.
