A long time ago, the porcupine only had fur and a round long tail like most rodent family. one day he was seen by a big black bear and the bear was hungry. the porcupine tried as hard as he could to run away but the bear stepped on his tail and flattened it a little bit. A hunter seen that the porcupine was quite defenseless and chased the bear away. the hunter told the porcupine he could help him. the porcupine let the hunter put clay all over his back and tail and on top of... his head. when he finished putting all the clay onto the porcupine he then took thorns from the Hawthorn tree and put them onto the porcupine. He told the porcupine to stay in the pine tree until you can grow the needles onto your back. the porcupine then began to feed on the pine bark and the pitch from the pine tree soon helped him to grow the quills. When the porcupine was all healed and had his own quills he began to walk on the ground again, and soon ran into the bear. The bear thought he had an easy lunch and went to step onto the tail of the porcupine and ran away with a sore paw. The porcupine then saw the hunter and asked him what he was hunting and the hunter replied that he was hunting caribou for his family and community. the hunter soon discovered that he was able to find and kill enough food for his family and community. this is why we call the porcupine Duneza', the will help you in your hunts if you ask them. There was a young boy who always played by the water and his parents kept telling him not to play down by the water and to stay in their sight along with the other children. the little boy would not listen and kept playing down by the water. one day, he fell in and he turned into a young salmon. the salmon were then on their way to the ocean, going on their four year journey. the little boy, who was now a little salmon was still showing signs... of disobedience and would not listen when the other salmon tried to get him to stay in the group. the little salmon would want to go in another direction and not follow the other salmon, even when told of the dangers in leaving the group. the little boy soon discovered that he would be going into dark and deep water that was more dangerous and scary. the little salmon also would want to take different streams and would be cut off from travelling any further. He really began to miss his family back home where he came from. The four year journey finally brought him back to the waters of where he first became a salmon. his parents were then setting net for their winter supply of food. the little salmon that now grew into a very large and strong salmon was swimming into his home waters and quickly became tangled into a net. Little did he know that it was his parent net and soon was being pulled into a boat. Upon being pulled out of the water he began struggling for air and started flopping around trying to go back into the water. It then occurred to the parents that this particular salmon began changing and was soon transformed back into a little boy, only four years older than when he left. His parents were very surprised and happy that their son had returned and gave him a big hug and told him that they missed him and had been looking for him every day. the little boy then held onto his parents and told them he would never disobey them and that he would listen to them when they told him to be safe.
