Dr. Catherine Mah is Chief Investigator of a groundbreaking study that aimed to reduce the volume of sugary food and beverages by restricting the merchandising ...of these products. The 12-week Healthy Stores 2020 trial was implemented across remote Indigenous Australia stores. The goal was to design a store environment where shoppers can choose freely, without highly refined marketing strategies affecting choices. The results: The volume of sugar purchased plummeted. In 12 weeks across 10 stores, 1.8 tonnes less free sugar was purchased through foods and drinks. That’s equivalent to the weight of a large car. Store sales didn’t drop off
