Need a quiet place to finish that assignment or study for exams? Dalhousie students, we're open for you! Masks are required at all times. Please book a time to come in advance. ... https://roombooking.library.dal.ca/ See more

Dalhousie Libraries 19.06.2020

On November 26, we introduced stricter measures in the Dalhousie Libraries to ensure masks were worn at all times by everyone in our spaces. This meant that regrettably, we could no longer allow eating in the Dal Libraries, but people can still remove their masks for a few seconds to take a drink. Since then, we've heard from many of our students who appreciate these new measures, and we just want to say, thank you for your understanding and your continued cooperation. Good ...luck on your exams and final assignments! https://blogs.dal.ca//masks-required-at-all-times-in-dalh/

Dalhousie Libraries 03.05.2020

We know that public libraries in Nova Scotia are closed for at least two weeks starting today, but academic libraries were NOT included in that announcement. That means we're open, as we have been, for bookable appointments for members of the Dalhousie community. BUT, we have adopted a zero tolerance policy for those not wearing masks properly in Dal Libraries spaces. Please, ensure that you are wearing a mask covering your mouth and nose at all times while in Dalhousie Libra...ries spaces. This also means that starting today, there is NO EATING in the Dal Libraries. You can bring a water bottle and remove your mask for the few seconds it takes to have a drink, but if you are not wearing your mask otherwise, you will be asked to leave immediately. This rule ensures the health and safety of Dalhousie Libraries staff and our library users. Thank you for your cooperation.

Dalhousie Libraries 21.04.2020

For the sake of the health and wellness of all Dalhousie Libraries staff and library users, effective Thursday, November 26, you must wear a mask covering your mouth and nose at all times while inside Dalhousie Libraries spaces. Anyone not wearing a mask that covers their mouth and nose while in the Dalhousie Libraries, except for a few seconds while taking a drink, will be asked to leave immediately. THIS MEANS THERE WILL BE NO EATING IN THE LIBRARIES. ... Thank you for respecting this rule for the safety of our staff and all library users.

Don't forget, we have study space available! You can book a computer, a study room, or just a spot to study at in one of the Dal Libraries. October is Mi’kmaq History Month and we're celebrating by featuring books on Mi’kmaq topics all month. Today's book offers a rare glimpse into sacred sexuality, gender, and identity. Honouring an often-hidden beautiful cultural landscape. Instructive, accessible, scholarly, relevant and practical. An insightful contribution to sexuality and gender, gay and lesbian, Native North American, and Indigenous studies. Welcoming and empowering for youth, adults, and family. Dr. Jose...ph Randolph Bowers is an Australian-Canadian Counsellor Psychotherapist and author of The Practice of Counselling, Sacred Teachings from the Medicine Lodge, and On the Threshold: Personal Transformation and Spiritual Awakening. Dalhousie Libraries 11.12.2019

October is Mi’kmaq History Month and the Dalhousie Libraries will be celebrating Mi’kmaq history by featuring books on Mi’kmaq topics all month. In 1927, Gabriel Sylliboy, the Grand Chief of the Mi'kmaq of Atlantic Canada, was charged with trapping muskrats out of season. The Sylliboy case was part of a broader debate within Canada about Indigenous peoples' legal status within Confederation. In using the 1752 treaty to try and establish a legal identity separate from that of ...other Nova Scotians, Mi'kmaq leaders contested federal and provincial attempts to force their assimilation into Anglo-Canadian society. Integrating matters of governance and legality with an exploration of historical memory, The Colonization of Mi'kmaw Memory and History offers a nuanced understanding of how and why individuals and communities recall the past. October is Canadian Library Month, a time when libraries have traditionally tried to reach new users to let them know about the great value libraries can bring to their lives. Within Canadian Library Month are several special days, including the third Friday of October which is reserved for Canadian Library Workers Day. We might be biased, but we just have to say that we have the some of the best library workers around right here at the Dalhousie Libraries!... (Photo taken Dec 2018 by Nick Pearce.)

Regardless of your faculty, we in the Dal Libraries consider all Dalhousie grads to be our graduates. We hope that as you become alumni, your relationship with the Dalhousie Libraries continues. We look forward to supporting your life-long learning journey and that you consider getting an alumni benefits card. October is Mi’kmaq History Month and the Dalhousie Libraries will be celebrating by featuring books on Mi’kmaq topics all month. Today's featured book is Real justice : convicted for being Mi'kmaq : the story of Donald Marshall Jr. by Bill Swan. When a young man was murdered in a Sydney, Cape Breton park late one night in 1971, his young companion, Donald Marshall Jr., became a prime suspect. Sydney police coached two teens to testify against Donald which helped convict him o...f a murder he did not commit. He spent 11 years in prison until he finally got a lucky break. Not only was he eventually acquitted of the crime, but a royal commission inquiry into his wrongful conviction found that a non-Indigenous youth would not have been convicted at all. Donald became a First Nations activist and later won a landmark court case in favour of Indigenous fishing rights. He was often referred to as the "reluctant hero" of the Mi'kmaq community.
