2019 marked 10 years of #RespectWeek on our #DalhousieU campuses. This year, we are holding space to re-imagine Respect Week for the next decade. What does respect mean to you? How and when can we commemorate this time? What language is reflective and meaningful? How can we engage with these topics in an intersectional way? How can we build on the current energy and commit to further action? We look forward to engaging in these conversations with you!

This year, we are commemorating Respect Week November 2 - 9! Respect Week provides an opportunity to remind our University community that all forms of discrimination, assault, harassment, and bullying are always unacceptable, whether they be on campus, online, or at home. It is our hope that the Dalhousie community will be inspired to think critically and act with intent to create a safer, more inclusive environment that we can all be proud of. For more information on the origins of Respect Week as well as a listing of some programming during Respect Week, visit our website at https://www.dal.ca//educa/events---campaigns/Pink-Day.html

October marks Mi’kmaq History Month with Treaty Day on October 1st. HRES is calling on the Dalhousie community to commemorate this time by reflecting on our collective responsibility in understanding our duties under the Peace and Friendship Treaties. #HRES, with the direction of Cathy Martin, our Indigenous Community Engagement Director, will be producing a short video highlighting what Treaty Day means to our campus community. To participate, please send us a short video (1-3 minutes long) answering the following question: what does Treaty Day mean to you? Please send your video to [email protected] or upload it to https://bit.ly/3kOtZJ5 by Tuesday, September 29th. We will be releasing the video through our social media channels and on our website. #MikmaqHistoryMonth #HRES #DalhousieU

The DSU Survivor Support Centre is hosting wellness workshops for survivors facilitated by Jungle Flower from Reclaim Your Voice. This is an opportunity to connect with other survivors and break the isolation that often follows trauma. You will not be pressured to share at any time, but you will have opportunities to do so if you wish. Create a comfy space for yourself, have something ready to write with and we'll see you Wednesday evening! A few years after escaping an abu...sive relationship, Jungle Flower (she/her) founded Reclaim Your Voice, hosting events where people who'd experienced abuse and sexual violence could share their stories. Since 2012 she has organized over 50 events in support of the survivor community. From 2018 to 2020 she took a break to focus on her own healing and restoration, travelling solo through Costa Rica, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam while exploring various healing modalities. In these workshops, she shares exercises based on her work with survivors and her training as a trauma-informed writing guide. Faces Over Boxes: Video participation is encouraged as it helps everyone feel connected. We also enthusiastically support your boundaries and ability to choose whether having your video on or off is best for you. You have the option of having video on, off, or switching throughout . Our DSU Survivor Support Manager, Shannon, will be present to offer support to anyone who might need it. WEDNESDAYS 7:00PM-8:30PM AST September: 16th. 23rd, 30th October: 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th November: 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th You may attend all the workshops, or as many as you like. These workshops are open to people of all genders. Please register with a Dalhousie or King's email at [email protected].

The asynchronous Anti-Racism Module provides a foundational overview of the ways in which Anti-Racism manifests within us, on our campuses, and in our communities. Through the exploration of concepts such as microaggressions, unconscious bias, Anti-Black and Anti-Indigenous racism, accountability and more, this workshop provides avenues of learning but most importantly implores as all to commit to changing our behaviours, attitudes and actions today. Open Call for Speakers & Presenters: HRES is looking for #speakers and workshop #presenters for our first day-long #conference on topics related to Human Rights, Social Justice, and Anti-Discrimination. The theme of the conference is Learning from the Past to Build for the Future: Challenging Discrimination from the Global to Local. The conference will be held on Friday, October 23, 2020. We are looking for #Speakers from a broad range of disciplines and backgrounds. We un...derstand the importance of representation within certain topics and encourage applicants to include a self-identification in their application. Why should I present? The goal of this #Conference is to encourage and generate educational discussions within the Dalhousie community so that we can keep the conversation going and carry forward the momentum of the global civil rights movement that is happening around us. We want to have speakers from various backgrounds and identities which is why we need you! What format will the sessions be? The format will be 1 hour; or 1.5-hour long sessions conducted online via #Zoom. Presenters can choose how they want to format their session and what tools and visuals they would like to provide (PowerPoint, PDF, images, etc.). We encourage presenters to provide opportunities for dialogue and engagement within the session whenever possible. How do I submit my proposal? If you are interested in presenting, please email us at [email protected] with title and brief description of your session by September 25, 2020. Feel free to also reach out if you have any questions. For more information visit following link http://bit.ly/dalhres or email us at [email protected]. We are looking forward to hearing from you!

Join Environmental Defence and The ENRICH Project for a virtual fundraiser with online conversations from women at the frontlines of Canada’s eco-justice struggles. Our special evening-in is with author and keynote speaker Dr. Ingrid Waldron and real-life heroes, many featured in the documentary film There's Something in the Water by celebrity director Ellen Page. Dr. Waldron will share her research on the hidden truth of environmental racism in rural Canada and how industrial catastrophes have been precisely placed - all in remote, low income, and very often Indigenous or Black communities - proving that your postal code can determine your health. https://act.environmentaldefence.ca/page/65842/petition/1

Today, Sunday, May 17 is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia. This day aims to raise awareness and coordinate international actions... for 2SLGBTQ+ rights around the world. This day by 2016 has been observed in 132 countries across the globe. The date was chosen to commemorate the decision to remove homosexuality from the International Classification of diseases of the World Health Organization. Today we would normally raise flags, listen to speeches, and recognize those who are working to make a difference to our community. However, on this day that where we would normally come together - for our own safety we have to be apart. While we may have to be physically distant it does not mean that we cannot share community. We encourage folks to share their pride today, whatever that means for you. This year’s theme in Canada for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia are ‘family support is essential.’ We encourage you to reach out to love ones who are apart of the 2SLGBTQ+ community and let them know that you love and support them because we know this support can save lives. Covid -19 has affected many in our community who have had to return to unsafe households and who may have lost contact with their support networks. Pride festivals which many of us rely on for not only community but employment have been canceled - all of this can feel like an extra weight added to the struggles we are all going through as Canadians. Our community, however, is resilient and always has been. There are many amazing organizations in Halifax working to create an online community and keep us all connected. DalOut is working on ways to be more active online - and we are still available both by messenger and email. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or if you are looking for support. We are proud to serve this community and will continue to advocate for the 2SLGBTQ+ community of Dalhousie. Stay strong and stay safe. Sincerely the DalOut executive of 2020-2021
