DYK: Our Knowledge for Prevention (K4P) project seeks to fill a crucial gap in current research and policy. While the recruitment and use of children in conflicts is an evolving and growing issue around the world, reliable and timely information to inform prevention efforts is lacking. Thus, K4P aims to develop an early warning system for the recruitment and use of children as soldiers, notably the first of its kind globally, to inform early and collaborative action to better protect children in conflict environments. We are grateful to our donor, our project advisory bodies and our K4P Community of Practice for their support in helping us lead this work.

Thank you to everyone who joined us this morning for the launch of the Latin American Centre of Excellence for Children, Peace and Security to implement the #VancouverPrinciples within the National School of Peace Operations of Uruguay. We commend our colleagues at the Ministerio de Defensa Nacional del Uruguay for their dedication to Peacekeeping, and the prevention of the recruitment and use of children in conflict. As one of the worlds top peacekeeping contributors per cap...ita, it is no surprise they place such a serious emphasis on the professionalization of their force. Being an early implementer of the Vancouver Principles will put them at the cutting edge of effective Peacekeeping. Speakers this morning included our Executive Director, Dr. Shelly Whitman and our Founder, Honourable, LGen (ret’d) Roméo Dallaire, Minister of National Defence of Uruguay, Dr. Javier García Duchini, Canadian Ambassador to Uruguay, Isabelle Valois, Uruguayan Ambassador to Canada, Martin Vidal, President of CALEN, MajGen(ret’d) Herbert Joaquin Figoli Almandos, Vice-President, Government & Global Relations of Dalhousie University, Matt Hebb. A touching moment came when MGen(ret’d) Herbert Joaquin Figoli Almandos spoke about his time serving under General Dallaire in Rwanda. The connection between Uruguay and Canada has been strong ever since, and the two commented today how happy they were to see this relationship usher in this progress today.
