Sudbury’s Ramsey Lake waterfront is our world class feature in the middle of our phenomenal city! We are the City of Lakes! Our community could do even more t...o build on what differentiates us. We should look to other best in class waterfront cities to draw inspiration to make our Ramsey Lake waterfront even more extraordinary. Our team was recently in Thunder Bay, Ontario at their Prince Arthur waterfront redevelopment and at the fantastic waterfront restaurant Bight Restaurant & Bar which is part of the Marina Park complex overlooking Lake Superior. Imagine a smaller scale, but similar level of cutting edge design/architecture on Ramsey Lake at the former Austin Airways site (Ramsey Lake Waterdome / the former Sudbury Rowing Club location) on the east side of Bell Park at 531 McNaughton Street or as a Public Private Partnership (PPP) project teaming up with the Sudbury Yacht Club to replace or enhance their aging building on their spectacular peninsula on the west side of Ramsey Lake. These locations would be fully connected by walking/wheelchair/biking trail to our top attractions: Bell Park, Grace Hartman Amphitheatre , Science North , Northern Water Sports Centre (NWSC) , Laurentian University - Université Laurentienne, Health Sciences North / Horizon Santé-Nord , NEO Kids Foundation , James Jerome Sports Complex , and the Lily Creek Boardwalk and it would be transformative for the City of Greater Sudbury. Creating a comprehensive waterfront vision would also compliment any future hotel, condominium, conference centre, restaurants, shops or expanded park potential that may be developed privately or publicly on Ramsey Lake as well. Our waterfront is within short walking distance of our downtown, on a central transportation corridor, fully serviced by public transportation. The parking lot beside the former General Hospital or the vacant land between Science North and the Sudbury Yacht Club could be utilized for many exciting public purposes including a mixed use waterfront art gallery, library, and event space which is currently under consideration by the Greater Sudbury City Council. Pulling together as a positive, united, energized community, we can raise the quality of life in Sudbury, Ontario and put in on the map as one of the best places in Canada to live, learn, work, play and visit. We can enhance our ability to retain / recruit our youth, professionals, medical workers, top talent and strengthen our ability to attract investment capital to continue to build our city’s future, our economy and jobs for our residents. Please share your best positive ideas in the comments below to brainstorm how we can make our waterfront gem - Ramsey Lake - even more incredible for generations to come.
