This week's Throwback Thursday post takes a look something that we are all searching for when washing our hands these days - the soap dispenser. Liquid soap was invented in 1865 by William Sheppard and with the invention of this new product a device to dispense it was soon created. The dispenser pictured here with and advertisement date between 1902-1920. The wall mounted swivel headed glass and nickel-plated Beau Brummell Liquid Soap Dispenser was manufactured by the W...est Disinfecting Co. Inc., New York U.S.A. West Disinfecting was founded at the end of the 19th century by Dr. Robert S. West who invented a tar-based disinfectant. The company expanded into the cleaning product industry and in 1925, established itself in Montreal, Quebec. It quickly earned a reputation for offering Canadians high quality disinfecting and cleaning products coupled with superb service. In 1957, West Disinfecting became West Chemical Products of Canada Ltd. Wall mounted soap dispensers like this one from the Daly House collection were used in railroad stations, hotels, doctor's offices and restaurants. #dalyhousemuseum #throwbackthursday #MuseumsEh #soapdispensers #museumfromhome #brandonmb #handwashing

What item do we use everyday that has a holiday all of their own? Why it is the humble button and today is their day! You may be thinking why does the button deserve its own day? Well, the button has a long and distinctive history. Ornamental buttons have been found in tombs dating back to 2800 BC. The functional button accompanied by the buttonhole date back to 13th Century Germany and quickly became the fastener of choice for the snug-fitting styles of the time. Butt...ons are also educational. They can teach us about the social, and culture of society in the eras they were used. The materials used to make them - both natural and synthetic - reflect the evolution of technology through the ages. A good example of this is the button collection from the Daly House Museum pictured here. These buttons collected by Laura Kirk of St. Mary, Ontario feature engraved metal buttons, buttons with inlaid mother of pearl, and buttons designed from early plastics. So lets button up to the button today and celebrate this remarkable fashion accessory that makes such a big deal in our modern lives. #dalyhousemuseum #buttonday #museummonday #westernmb #stmaryontario #history

In honor of Remembrance Day and the 75th Anniversary of the end of World War II we're sharing photographs from the photograph album belonging to Joseph Alexander Whitehead of Brandon. Joseph (Joe) Alexander Whitehead was born January 1, 1925 to Ernest Christie Whitehead and Grace (Davidson) Whitehead of Brandon. He was educated in Brandon and Vancouver. Joe enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II and served on board Fairmile Type B motor boats. After the war... he returned to Brandon and became the assistant general manager of the Brandon Sun Publishing Co. He was interested in military affairs and was a sub-lieutenant in the local Navy Cadets and later was attached to the 26th Field Regiment. He was a hobby photographer and was interested in alley bowling and golf. He married Geraldine Kerr in 1945 and had one son. Joseph Alexander Whitehead passed away on October 1, 1953 due to complications from Polio. Happy Throwback Thursday! Anyone remember Stubby brand soda? We just discovered this rare metal advertising sign in our collections. It is one of our little known treasurers and a true blast from Canada's past. For those who don't remember Stubby it was a soda created by the Brown Beverage Company in Ontario around the 1930s. The company's original product was an orange cream soda. They later went on to make five different flavors. Unfortunately, the company stopped ma...king the product in the 1960s. You can see this sign and much more when you visit Daly House. We are open Tuesday to Saturday 10: 00 am to noon and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Book your free reservation at https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/107101186532 or call us at 204-727-1722 #dalyhousemuseum #bgma #throwbackthursday #museumfromhome #artifacts #westernmb #metalsigns

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - commonly known as "Alice in Wonderland" - is a novel by Lewis Carroll published in 1865. It is one of the best known and most popular works in English fictional literature. It's narrative, structure, characters, and imagery has been influential in popular culture. The book has never been out of print and it has been translated into as many as ninety-seven languages. This 1907 edition of the book is currently on display at Daly House Museum. It was published by H.M. Caldwell Co. of New York and Boston. The cut-out pictures inside are still intact. #dalyhousemuseum #museumfromhome #youngreadersday #aliceinwonderland #brandonmb

This week's Throwback Thursday photo is of an unidentified baseball team - perhaps from Earl Haig School- just donated to Daly House Museum. The only individual identified is Henry T. Nordin ( far left back row). He was the principal of King George and Alexandra Schools between the 1940s to the 1960s. We'd love to identify the team, its members and the trophy they won. If anyone knows please let us know. Thank you. #dalyhousemuseum #baseballteam #brandonmb #vintagephotograph #archives #museumfromhome #brandonremembered #mystery #throwbackthursday

On this day in 1911 the Manitoba Rugby Football Union merged with the rugby unions of Saskatchewan and Alberta to form the Western Canada Rugby Football Union. Five years earlier the August 10, 1906 Brandon Weekly Sun announced the formation of a rugby club to contend for the Manitoba Rugby Championship. The team had many victories over their Winnipeg competitors and were described in the local paper as giving " a pretty exhibition of fine catching and punting, clever ru...nning, and sure tackling as has ever been seen on a local field." - Brandon Weekly Sun, October 18, 1906. The 1906 team (pictured) made it to the championship match against the Winnipeg Rowing Club. The teams faced off in Brandon at the fair grounds. Admission to the game was twenty-five cents. Unfortunately, the club failed to win the championship and seems to have faded from history. However, the sport remains popular in the city today with teams such as the Brandon Barbarians. The archives at Daly House is a great source of local sports memorabilia. We have one of the best collections of local sporting team photographs including the Brandon Wheat Kings. On this date in 1904, the father of universal health care in Canada, Tommy Douglas was born in Scotland. His interest in free medical care for everyone developed as a young boy when he suffered a knee injury that required numerous and expensive surgeries to treat. Faced with the prognosis of losing his leg, Douglas's salvation came when an orthopedic surgeon in Winnipeg offered to treat him for free if medical students were allowed to observe. After numerous surgeries, Dou...glas’s leg was saved and he became a believer in the idea that health care should be free for all. At the age of 19, Douglas attended Brandon College to finish his high school and to study theology. During his time at Brandon College he became a champion debater, wrote for the school newspaper and participated in student government as president of the student body. He graduated from Brandon College in 1930 and went on to received his Masters of Arts in Sociology in 1933 from McMaster University. Between 1935 to 1962, Douglas served as a Member of Parliament and the Premier of Saskatchewan. As a politician his primary concern was the creation of Medicare. He introduced universal health care legislation to the Province of Saskatchewan in 1962. Ten years later all provinces and territories in Canada had similar Medicare legislation. This graduation photograph of Tommy Douglas from Brandon College in 1930 is curtesy of the S.J. McKee Archives at Brandon University. The McKee Archives and the Daly House Museum Archives are full of documents and photographs related to the history of Brandon and area. Did you know that the first Thanksgiving celebrated in Canada was on November 6, 1879 when refugees from the American Civil War brought it to Canada. There was no fixed date for the annual event as this menu dated October 30, 1911 shows. Thanksgiving was moved to October after World War I when Remembrance Day was created in 1931. Since 1957, it has been the second Monday in October. The Imperial Hotel Thanksgiving menu shown here lists the delicious foods the hotel's res...taurant served on October 30, 1911. Meals available included roast lamb with mint sauce, fruit with brandy sauce, and iced pineapple custard. Quite different from our traditional turkey and cranberry sauce. Have a safe Thanksgiving everyone! #dalyhousemuseum #westernmanitoba #archives #thanksgiving #Canadianthanksgiving #funfact

As harvest is winding up for many producers in our area we thought that today's Throwback Thursday should honor everyone who makes our food. This photograph from the Museum's archives shows the thirteen men threshing team on David Wright's farm in the Wellwood, Manitoba area around 1901. The blower on the threshing machine is a "Carberry Blower" that was made in Carberry Manitoba. #dalyhousemuseum #brandonmb #carberrymanitoba #threshing #harvest #archives
