This woman was significant in St. John's and NL history. Louise M. Saunders (1893-1969) was the first female lawyer in NL. She started as a legal secretary for ...Sir Richard Squires, a Prime Minister of Newfoundland, articled under him and practised in partnership with him after being admitted to the bar in 1933. She eventually opened her own firm of Saunders and Carew. Louise was active in the community and was a charter member of the Council of Women. She was also an accomplished artist. A forerunner for sure. See more
