Broccoli soup sans the dairy cream and cheese is still #Delish! The creaminess can come from potatoes, coconut milk and the bone marrow from beef or pork broth. Not to point all the blame on dairy, but it can be mucus forming and hard to digest. . Don’t forget the broccoli stems! The florets are so much more fun to eat but gram for gram, the stems actually contain more nutrition! (Especially iron, calcium and vitamin C) Puréed soup is a fabulous way to eat up the stalks. .... Bone marrow is full of omega 3 essential fatty acids, vitamin K and other fat soluable nutrients. Perfect for brains . This soup contains broccoli, carrots, potatoes, pork broth & marrow (thank you @tk_ranch ) coconut milk and spices. . Prettysimple. Pretty nutritious. Pretty delicious. #broccoli #broccolistems #brainfood #eatyourvegetables #soupeveryday #soupseason #seasonaleating #holisticnutrition #fatisgoodforyou #bonebroth #bonemarrow

Each season is connected to an element and flavour. When we don’t honour the elements and flavours inherent to each season, we create weakness in our health, which will be expressed in the following season. When there is balance in each season, our health is under control. If there is no balance, then our health becomes destructive, creating a negative domino effect into the following season. For example because thicker blood is necessary during the cold winter months ... by knowing how to choose and prepare food according to winter, we can actually enjoy the season, rather than feel uncomfortably frozen all the time. Roasted Veggies is in the dinner-meal spotlight lately and they make amazing leftovers for next day breakfast or lunch! We are taking a break from the fresh green salads and getting toasty with fall veggies so we stay warm. Sometimes it’s hard to get excited about vegetables in the winter since they aren’t fresh from the garden, but roasting turns them into cozy comfort-food with it’s own satisfying crunch. Pictured here is heirloom little-giant potatoes, parsnips, asparagus, red onion, garlic, red cabbage, red pepper, broccoli & cauliflower. We eat our roasted veggies with sauerkraut and a dollop of organic full-fat greek yogurt. Soon I will be posting some of the most delicious sauces to go on roasted and steamed veggies. . #roastedveggies #seasonaleating #eatingwiththeseasons #wintereats #nutritionist #fibre #eatwiththeseasons #holistichealth #holisticnutrition #holisticnutritionist #fallveggies #addlifetoyouryears #nutritionnerd #harmony #balance #healthiswealth

The All-You-Need Cookie. Finally! A cookie creation that is a delicious & nutritious accomplishment! Cookie implies a decadent dessert, but the All-You-Need cookie is fully loaded with nutrition and fibre that can be eaten at anytime of the day. What it's not loaded with is sugar, which was my primary goal! ... The not-so-secret ingredient is molasses. Not only does it give the cookie a taste of gingersnaps (my fav) but molasses is low glycemic and offers amazing nutrition -vitamins & minerals, such as iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin B6, selenium and potassium. AND not to mention all the other goodies such as walnuts, almonds, coconut flakes, sunflower seeds, chia, flax and sesame seeds! Flax helps to bind the cookie, so there is no need for eggs, making this recipe #vegan. I use fermented and dehydrated oats in this recipe (which increases their digestibility) but there is no need to do so. Eat this cookie and feel super satiated! It’s honestly the best and stays stocked in my freezer all the time! The importance of potassium is all the rage now, and rightly so! The spotlight has been on magnesium for so long, but it’s interesting to note that we need 10x as much Potassium! Potassium and Magnesium are literally the top two nutrients inside our cells. When we are resting, 40% of ATP (energy) is used to shuttle magnesium and potassium into our cells. It is vital to have an abundant amount of these two minerals in our diet, but let us take a peak at Potassium specifical...ly: ** it is the most potent mineral found in our cells! ** it is our body's number 1 intracellular electrolyte. Potassium helps carry electrical signals to cells. We need this to happen for proper nerve and muscle function, especially heart muscles. **when Potassium levels are low, cells are not properly communicating. You may feel faint and dizzy, have laboured breathing, heart skips a beat, tingling and numbness sensations, muscles feel weak and crampy. ** adults should be consuming approx 5 grams of potassium everyday. **studies show that 99% of women and 90% of men are deficient in potassium. Among popular potassium foods such as Bananas and Avocados, Potatoes (especially russet potatoes) are even higher in potassium! I just gave you the best reason to fill up on life-giving potatoes ;) #potassium #potatoes #electrolytes #minerals #nutritionnerd #cellularnutrition #healthiswealth #holisticnutrition #addlifetoyouryears #nutrientsarenecessary #takechargeofyourhealth #prevention

A carrot a day keeps excess estrogen away! It turns out raw carrots contain uniques fibres that bind toxins out of the body, particularly excess estrogen. Excess estrogen (also known as ‘estrogen dominance’) is all to common in both women and men because of processed diets and the extensive amount of xenoestrogens (man made chemicals that act like estrogen in the body - a recipe for hormonal disaster). Estrogen dominance is not pretty > PMS, major mood swings, fertility... issues, weight gain, acne and it even affects men. When excess estrogen is swept out of the body, it means less inflammation, less stress on the liver, better thyroid health, leading to overall health improvement. The carrot must be raw, as cooking can break down these unique fibres. It is also best to eat organic carrots since the Environmental Working Groups lists carrots and the 22nd most contaminated food. Ideally, the carrot can be washed but not peeled, since the peel prevents the growth of negative bacteria. Besides binding to excess estrogen, the unique fibres in carrots also boosts immunity by acting as a natural digestive brush, scrubbing away unwanted toxins and bad bacteria. Crunch your way to hormonal balance! Eating right is one of those essential life-enhancing routines. #addlifetoyouryears #nutritionnerd #hormonebalance #rawcarrots #estrogendominance #holistichealth #holistichealing #poweroffood #crunchyourwaytohealth #nutritionist #fiber

Schizandra is POWERFUL and its benefits cannot be told all at once. The transformation it has on the mind and heart is superb. The truth is, I also consume this berry every morning because it is a gentler detoxifier for the Lymph, Liver, Lung, and Kidneys. Schizandra has the profound ability to pull the toxins out of the blood stream by keeping the toxins bound until they are cleared to the eliminatory organs. I love drinking 1 tsp of Schizandra powder in warm water with a d...ollop of honey and squeeze of lemon, first thing in the morning. You can feel the berry cleaning your blood as soon as you taste it’s five flavours > sour, bitter, sweet, pungent (spicy), & salty. I use New Earth Organics Cold Extracted Schizandra berry powder, found on their website https://www.newearthorganicscanada.com//american-schizand/ Brilliant! #superfoods #schizandraberry #adaptogens #brilliantberry #detoxify #calmnerves #5flavors #preciousfood #morningritual

Fermented Oats - truly a superfood breakfast. It took me awhile to get used to a savoury breakfast involving oats. But, this bowl is deeply and empoweringly satisfying. With so many people trying to reduce their sugar content, I wanted to share this idea. Fermenting the oats unlocks the nutrients, improves digestibility and absorption. The taste? It’s sour and extra creamy texture is #nextlevel A dab of grass fed butter at the bottom of the bowl > pile on the oats > t...op with chopped sauerkraut, steamed kale, chia & hemp seeds > drizzle with Nama Shoyu or tamari. Oh #yumyumyum My baby eats it up like dessert. Interesting! I always feel ‘off’ when exposed to LED light. Ever since buying full spectrum lightbulbs for all the lamps in my home (pricey but worth it), I’m much more content and relaxed. Priceless! The blue light suppressed melatonin for about twice as long as the green light and shifted circadian rhythms by twice as much (3 hours vs. 1.5 hours).

"A house that is spacious and strongly built will serve as a pleasant home for many, many years, even if the occupants are less than conscientious about the upkeep. And if such a house falls into disrepair it can be brought back to good condition with the proper attention. But a house that is poorly built may never be comfortable and will require constant maintenance just to keep it from falling down. Most children growing up today live in the latter type of house. Throughout life, in order to be healthy, such individuals will need to pay very careful attention to their diets at all times. Their houses will likely be constantly springing leaks - allergies, digestive problems, fatigue, behaviour abnormalities, etc." Katherine Erlich

Happy Spring Everyone! Optimal Vitamin D intake is so important for your health: dental health, blood sugar control, bone health, cardiovascular health, improved immune system function etc. In Western Canada, vitamin D from the sun is not present from mid October to mid March. Luckily, we are in business again! ... The best way to generate vitamin D is from the UVB rays of the sun, which only enter the atmosphere when the sun is at an elevation angle from the horizon greater than 35. The time of day that UVB rays are at their strongest, is when the sun is at the highest point in the sky, known as SOLAR NOON. This is when the rate of Vitamin D generation increases, but will decrease again once the sun hits 35 in the opposite direction. UVA rays are still present throughout the whole day, which are harmful for the skin. The trick is to expose your skin - as much of it as you can! - for 10-20 minutes at solar noon to get the most of the UVB, vitamin D rays. If you are out longer than that, it’s important to protect your skin. Today, solar noon is at approx. 1:45pm. Are you ready to show a little skin?
