A face mask or covering can be used when keeping a distance of 6 feet from others is difficult. You can make your own mask with materials you already have at home (e.g. cotton t-shirt or pillowcase). Learn more: https://www.toronto.ca//covid-19-stay-reduce-virus-spread/

The care of the Earth is our most ancient and most worthy, and after all our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it and to foster its renewal is our only hope. - Wendell Berry _ Earth Day this year is 50 years young relative to how ancient the planet actually is. This year’s events have gone online a direct contrast to the natural world we’re celebrating due to COVID-19 complications. The hope with every Earth Day that passes is that environmenta...l literacy awareness grows and increasingly people feel a responsibility to act to protect our lands and oceans. _ We hope that some moment of today will be spent on reflecting just how interconnected humans are to the natural world. That the waste we create just doesn’t go away. We’re all part of a living planet, with birds and animals, plants and fish, that rely on us to stand with them not versus them. Eco not ego. _ This beautiful illustration was created for Danforth Reduces by the talented artists at @create4impact See more

We are all in this together! Supporting one another will result in outcomes that’ll lift us all up. Small business owners and their staff are making tough decisions on a daily basis. Here are some gestures of support we can do to help them make it through this challenging period: Order takeout or delivery Pay with credit or debit cards Call in your order Shop small online or buy gift cards... Understand the hard decisions Stay home if you’re sick For those of us who are particularly interested in waste reduction, and BYOC programs, we have to understand and respect a business owner’s decision to suspend programs under further notice. Danforth Reduces will do our best to communicate with our network when BYOC programs are back on. _ Image: @commondeer

Ever wonder what taring your container is all about? The concept is quite simple, weigh your empty container so that you’re not paying for the weight of it at the point of sale. In some shops you’ll be able to do this yourself at designated tare stations; while at others a cashier will weigh it for you. Something we’re learned is that sharpie marker on glass will wash off later. _ Next is the fun part: filling your containers, bags, and/or jars! Some tips: use a funnel if t...he neck of your jar is too narrow that the scoop or spout won’t fit without touching the container. You can bring your own funnel, canning funnels work well, or a filter funnel for really narrow entry points. _ When you’re ready to pay, leave it to the cashier to deduct the tare weight. _ #BYOC #BringYourOwn #PackageFreeShopping #Reuse #Reduce #tare #PackageFree #ZeroWaste #ZeroWasteShopping #BulkBins #DitchSingleUse See more

Little Ones Closet (@littleonesclosettoronto) is the latest business to join our reduction initiative! Owner, Julie, has done a lot of amazing work to reduce waste in her store. _ Little Ones Closet mainly offers preloved clothing for ages 0 to 14 yrs. They will buy your used kids clothing, as well as maternity clothing, and resell it to others in the community. Any unsold clothing is donated to The New Mom Project facebook.com/Newmomproject/ (1450 O'Connor Dr), and anything... that can’t be sold or donated is given to a local company who turns them into rags. The goal is to keep textiles out of the landfill. And we love this! _ Donations of kids shoes, books, toys, carriers, baths, and seats are also accepted. _ Located at 1854 Danforth Ave. Close to Woodbine TTC Stn. _ Thank you for all the waste reduction efforts you’re making! Felt super awesome to be part of the @thedannybia AGM tonight, introducing the attendees to the Danforth Reduces initiative!! _ Nice to meet many of business owners who we will be interacting with as we work to make Danforth a less wasteful area for take out and eat in. It’s clear too that beautification is top priority for the BIA so seeing empty single use coffee cups shoved in planters or styrofoam drifting through the streets on a windy day is not in line with the values here. Having our streets free of litter means reducing the amount of disposables given out. We can work on reducing waste together! _ Thank you again for the opportunity to speak and we look forward to keeping the conversation going. Please reach out here if you’re interested in getting our sticker in your window.

Love this compilation of Toronto-centric resources that we can refer to as we learn to live with less waste. It covers a wide range of areas - reduce, reuse, rethink, rehome, and repair. Hope you find it just as helpful as we do! credit: @itsahashtaglife (Emily)
