T...here are 2 keys to avoiding Lyme transmission from ticks - early detection and proper removal. The bacteria that causes Lyme lives in a tick’s gut and generally takes quite some time to travel to its mouth and then into you. Usually if you remove the tick within 24 hours, your risk is greatly reduced or even eliminated...as long as the feeding tick is removed properly. If the abdomen is pinched, the bacteria can be pushed up the tick and into you. Often the abdomen gets pulled right off but the tick mouthparts remain embedded, resulting in more difficult removal and increased chance of exposure to disease.
