Ke' chin Nodrëk - The Magic Mukluk. Today is the winter solstice- the shortest and darkest time of the year. The cold and dark days we come together and share our old stories, family stories and even new stories. Working with original artwork by Darcy Tara McDiarmid, Glenda, Georgette and Fran have created a new story of one young person’s adventure while gathering wood for the winter celebration at Moosehide Village. We hope you enjoy it.... Drin tsul zhìt shò ähay. Wishing you a happy holiday season, good health and good times as we walk towards 2021. . . . . . #dawsoncity #dawson #storytelling #indigenousstorytelling #yukonfirstnations #moosehide #moosehidegathering #trondekhwechin #storytellingforkids

It is the dark time of year again. The storytelling time. We have been inspired by the story of a large winter gathering held in 1903-04 at Moosehide Village. Over 200 guests arrived by dog team from near and far for two weeks of celebration! Every person has a role to play when hosting guests- even the youth. ... Collecting wood and hauling water were both very important activities to keep camp running smoothly. We got to wondering what kind of adventures did the kids have while doing their chores? Working with original artwork by Darcy Tara McDiarmid, we have created a new story of one young person’s adventure on the trail. Stay tuned for that story to be posted on winter solstice- December 21. Out for a walk over the holidays? Check out the giant, shining Magic Mukluk on the driveway of Danoja Zho and the window display on the Yukon River side of Danoja Zho. These are both part of our storytelling project. . . . . #dawsoncity #storytelling #yukonstorytelling #yukon #yukonfirstnations #moosehidevillage #trondekhwechin #longtimeago #solstice #traditions #mukluks #dawson #IndigenousStorytelling

Nodrëk! It shines! It was a cold night with a north wind off the Yukon River, but that didn't stop folks from celebrating the dark time and the end of the school term at Danoja Zho Cultural Centre and along the dike. The fireworks were great (even though our photos are not) and the contributions of ice candles, mukluks and animal lanterns was so beautiful!... The Dawson Firefighters blew off 3 rounds of fireworks. A good reward for those who hung out and walked the glowing path-way and stayed by the fire hosted by Elder Victor Henry. A big shout out to Mr. Menzies shop class at Robert Service School! That was an awesome torch! Mähsi cho to Asia and Stephen who braved the cold wind and frost bitten fingers to light the 130 ice lanterns and luminarias. Mähsi cho to the Klondike Visitors Assc. and City of Dawson Recreation for the purchase of the fireworks! Today is so much more than an orange shirt. Today we recognize the experiences of over 150,000 Indigenous children, including children from our Dawson community, who suffered great harm at residential schools in Canada. Residential schools were established with the purpose of assimilating Indigenous peoples into mainstream Canadian society by attempting to erase their cultures, force them into Christianity and to speak only English or French. Students were discouraged from sp...eaking their Indigenous language or practicing their culture and traditions. If they were caught, the children would experience severe and often cruel punishment. Throughout the years, students lived in substandard conditions and endured physical and emotional abuse. One in twenty-five Indigenous children died while attending residential schools. There have also been convictions of sexual abuse perpetrated by school administration and staff. Students at residential schools rarely had opportunities to see or experience family life. Most were in school 10 months a year, away from their parents and relatives; some stayed all year round. All correspondence from the children was written in English or French, which many parents couldn't read. Brothers and sisters at the same school rarely saw each other, were forbidden to speak to each other and all activities were segregated by gender. Some schools carried out nutritional experiments on malnourished students in the 1940's and 1950’s with the church and federal government's knowledge. When children returned to their communities, they often found they couldn't speak their language and didn't have the skills or knowledge to help their parents. They became outsiders in their own lands. Frustrated and isolated, the children often became ashamed of their Indigenous heritage. The education or skills taught at the residential schools were generally substandard; many former students found it hard to function in an urban setting and were not prepared for young adult life outside the institution or in their communities. The aims of Canadian assimilation meant devastation for those who were subjected to years of this abuse and has caused inter-generational trauma and hurt that remains present in our communities today. We recognize these hurts and recommend all Canadians read and think about how they can participate and move forward in reconciliation through the Calls To Action. http://www.trc.ca/assets/pdf/Calls_to_Action_English2.pdf #orangeshirtday2020 #dawsoncity #dawson #trondekhwechin #DZCC #residencialschool #everychildmatters #yukon #yukonfirstnations #indigenouscanada #reconciliation
