Every September 30th since 2013 we wear orange shirts to commemorate the residential school experience, to witness and honour the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation. For over 160 years in Canada, an estimated 150,000 Indigenous children were forcibly taken away from their families and sent to residential schools thousands never came home. The last residential school finally closed its doors in 1996.... Physical, mental and sexual abuse, as well as the trauma of being separated from their families, affected these children and their descendants for generations. At Dan’s Legacy, about 40% of our clients are Indigenous. Through our trauma-informed and culturally sensitive counselling and wrap around programs, we help our Indigenous youth clients gain insight into the trauma origins of their mental health challenges, as well as connect them to community and culture. Read here about the origins of this important day and who wore the first Orange Shirt https://www.orangeshirtday.org/about-us.html and watch Wawahte, a short film by producer John Sanfilippo and Robert P. Wells, Author , which tells the first hand stories of residential school survivors. Link shared with permission. https://bit.ly/2ENDr00 Orangeshirtday

June is Pride Month and at Dan’s Legacy we’re proud of the diversity of our team and the programming we provide for LGBTQ2S+ youth. In 2018 we launched our Queer Femme art workshops at the REACH Community Centre, but after a year the group determined that the program was not growing, missing diversity and not meeting the need of the community in the way we had intended. We supported the youth in preparing and hosting their first annual Trans Extravaganza, which was designed ...to help racialized and marginalized Trans, Two-Spirit, Non-Binary and Inter-sex (Q2SNBI+) youth discover resources in the community, discover identity pride and build self-confidence. The project was also a way our youth participants to connect with one another, develop leadership and organization skills, and help educate the hetero-cis world on their needs and issues. We’d like to thank the Pacific Blue Cross Foundation and Loyal Protestant Association for their financial support of our Queer Femme workshops, and the Red Gate Arts Society, LOVE BC, Trans Care BC, Out In Schools, Aunt Leah's Independent Lifeskills Society, BYRC, ::Man Up:: Morgane Oger, Miss604 our social media sponsor, the Trans Extravaganza Youth Committee, our volunteers and the many other supporters who helped make the Trans Extravaganza such a success.

June 21 is National Indigenous People's Day in Canada, "a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples". At Dan's Legacy, about 40% of our youth clients are Indigenous, and most have grown up in foster care or in the inner city, completely disconnected from community and culture. In 2019 we launched our Land-based Therapy intervention program, which gave the yo...uth the chance to experience the healing of the land. Here are some pictures of our camping trips to Tofino and Salt Spring Island, participating in the Pulling Together Canoe Journey at Tla'amin Nation, and a trip to Bella Coola where the youth discovered ancient Indigenous petroglyphs, watched bears salmon fishing, and experienced a soul cleansing spirit bath. Thanks to our therapist Kent Apa'tsti Danielson for these amazing photos! Our thanks to Coast Capital Savings Community Investment, TELUS Friendly Future Foundation, Canadian Medical Association Foundation, and Government of British Columbia Civil Forfeiture grants for their funding support of our Land-based Therapy Program in 2019 & 2020.
