A couple years ago, a client asked us to dispose of an abused pool table as part of a basement reno. I kept a piece of slate from the top. Last week, we repurposed it to be a counter top for the shop bathroom. We had Ashburnham Metals make us a custom stainless deep sink for clean-ups. The tap I won at a Jack and Jill. If your floor feels more like a trampoline than a dance floor, chances are someone has pretended to be a carpenter and failed. Every year we fix work done by unlicensed, unqualified and uninsured homeowners, handy people and "carpenters". We continually push the ministry of training to restrict the trade to help protect homeowners and the integrity of the industry. We encourage the client to do their research and ask for credentials. This beam project was because someone cut out a support post and undersized a beam. Let's close this in. I don't know why, but this is my favorite part of the build. Looking down the horizon line of the trusses and watching them all plane out, then running around like crazy monkeys wailing down sheets of plywood. The completion of the framing portion of this build is drawing to an end. The heat faught us the entire build, but we just pushed through it. Hats off to the crew at D.C.D. for giving it their all. 8/12 - 30' truss, time to get tour sea legs on! Nice easy gable roof with a small tie in. Thanks to @kingdontimbermart for giving us a lift on this one. We boomed these guys up tip to tip and stood half, then jumped to the other end and came back. Boomed, stood, racked and braced in a day! Back the next day to sheet the beast. And bam, there you have your second floor. These were some super hot days getting this done. Once you throw up the exterior walls you are in the cooker. I'll let you in on a little secret, the plans had the wrong window placement across the back of the house. All the windows were staggered 6" from the lower windows. I should have caught it immediately, I caught it at the end of the day when I stood back at the already framed, sheeted and stood walls. Live and learn. Took the next morning and moved them. Floor Trusses anyone? Amazing boom work by Mike @kingdontimbermart. These bad boys were two different heights, so we had to frame our garage walls a little shorter to accomodate. Before a shovel hit the ground, there was a day of planning footing depths, wall heights and connections in order to line up our finishes at the back end of the project. Then we frame the walls. We were running a small crew for this one without a telehandler, so this was good old fasion framing. I wish I could say every set of plans were perfect and you could just shut your brain off and frame, but what fun would that be. This job had lots of little surprises that if you weren't paying attention it could really ruine a perfectly good day. Heat sheet, radiant tubing and W.W.M. all placed. We place 15m bar in all the garage door openings to prevent break out between slab and wall. We then pressurize the lines to 30 PSI until after the pour. This assures no lines are damaged or punctured during prep. or while pouring. By far my youngest apprentice, but also the most eager to learn. Better to fix the problem now, then to loose a coat later. If I were to wager a guess, it was probably the end of a tape pull and the hopper was getting empty. FlashBack: What started as a simple damproofing contracting and drainage job, turned into an underpinning and structural reinforcement. For anybody who has done underpinning, it is never a fun job, but one that few will do. It's a get your hands dirty and get it over with kinda job. With this house the footings were cracked across 20' of the back of the house. We sectioned off areas and did the underpinning in 3 pours. After the footings were setup and grout packe...d, we then needed to structurally repair the block wall. For this we knocked the faces off the top of the block, forced 15mm bar from top to bottom, then pumped in a grout mix. Our one mistake...was we missed a crack on the inside of the house behind the furnace. We ended up pumping about 15 gallons of grout into the basement before we realized there was a problem. Blow-outs are never a good time, but we got it cleaned up and emergency patched to finiah the pour. We finished the job by parging the back, taring, delta clad, socked-O and 3 feet of gravel. Here was a job that was 2 steps forward, one step back. We opened up this bedroom for an amazing client, only to find soaked insulation and mould. We used Quatro44 from @swish_ca to remove and scrub the roof deck and rafters. Dried everything out and then sealed it all with closed cell and finally rigid foil faced insulation. The next part of the reno was to deal with the fireplace. Another nightmare waiting to be opened. We reframed it, put in a new header, poured a new concrete base for the insert and then sprayed it all to seal it. This was a surprise for the client. After doing a huge restoration and working closely with the client for months, this was the least we could do. To give you an idea of how closely we work with our client. The cherry ledge around the tub was selected based on the sound the scotch glass made when it was set down. How do I define a GREAT employee / carpenter? It is maturity... when you come to me with solutions, not problems. Here is a prime example from awhile back. A guy called in at 8, when he was already suppose to be at work and said he was sick. It left us short handed on truss day. Trusses had already been dropped the afternoon before...so this was our work around. The dead man. We set this up to drag the peaks across as we carried the heals and stood them. It also acted as a fail safe so we couldn't loose a truss. Experience, engage that bowling ball on your shoulders, look for answers, not problems. Fit in a quick wall removal for a buddy this week. Old 70's style board and plaster house. Went up into the attic, installed a beam to hanger the ceiling joists off of. We then came downstairs and cut away the metal mesh in the joints and removed the wall. Because the plaster varies in thickness, we laid a base of 1/2" drywall and then filled the difference with a sheetrock 90. We then used fibafuse tape and Trimex vinyl bead, finishing our part with first coat. The homeowner is going to take it from here - but we are glad we could give them a hand and get them started on the right foot with their kitchen reno.

I found out today what the tile for this backsplash is going to be... you guys are going to love it! We have a last minute addition to the kitchen that will be installed at the end of the month, but I think we are going to hop on this tile soon just to keep the project moving.

First we prep the trim, then we do the things and then we hang the picture frame. If you aren't preassembling your window and door casements, are you even really doing carpentry? Depending on the material and the space we have to work with, we switch up our glues for the mitres. Ultimately it is the quality of the joints that this method will win out on every time. A Stoney Lake cottage we brought out of the '70s, but didn't loose the cottage feel. Some updates included: removing the old person slider windows and replacing them with new North Star patio sliding doors @alfcurtishomeimprovements. We also gave this place a new 8' wrap around deck with new glass @vistarailings guards, courtesy of @kingdontimbermart . New grand stairway leading to the lake. We got rid of both layers of carpet and replaced it with new vinyl plank floorin...g from @whelansflooringcentre . New live edge walnut eat up from @monaghan_lumber. The list really goes on for days, but this cottage will live on for lifetimes as it makes warm memories of sun kissed skin and warm summer nights by the lake.
