Lest We Forget. A recent donation to the museum. Printed in 1918 by the Heliotype Co. Ltd. of Ottawa. Written in May of 1915 during the Second Battle of Ypre...s by Lt. Col. John McCrae. He was a medical officer with the 1st Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery, Canadian Expeditionary Force. McCrae’s poem was mass produced during the war, accompanied by images and even put to music. The images of poppies and crosses reflect the poems verses, but perhaps not it’s tone, which is perhaps more belligerent than it is often remembered. This meaning has softened with time. Contemporary readers, including school children, generally encounter the work as an ode to peace or as a reminder to reflect past sacrifices. In McCrae’s time, writing in 1915, the phrase take up our quarrel with the foe had a far more precise and political message. -Canadian War Museum
