FUN FACT: Wallpaper has come a long way over the years, but did you know that the product we now call bubble wrap was originally created to be a textured wallpaper? In 1957, engineer Al Fielding and inventor Marc Chavannes dreamt up the idea of a textured wallpaper. They started by heat-sealing two shower curtains together in a way that formed air bubbles, creating the texture that they were looking for. Unfortunately, this plastic textured wallpaper idea wasn't exactly a hot sell. Their team thought up a variety of other uses for their invention, including greenhouse insulation - which was also a fail, and eventually landed on the product that we now know as bubble wrap! While you may have many other uses for bubble wrap around your home, could you imagine your walls being covered in it?

There's a first for everything and 2020 seems to be proving that. November home sales hit an all time record - up 32% compared to November 2019. The past few months have shown that more and more homes are being sold, reaching over 15,000 home sales thus far for 2020. Listings may be down, but sales are definitely going up as families find that their current homes no longer serve their needs. Mortgage rates have been relatively low this year, making it the perfect time for man...y buyers to start the process of purchasing a new home. This also means that if you were thinking about selling, now is a great time to get your house on the market! Check out the link in my bio for an in-depth analysis, or contact me for more information and let’s start preparing for the purchase or sale of your home.

For many families, the kitchen is the heart of the home. While custom kitchens with plenty of built-in storage sound appealing, they also cost a pretty penny. But there’s no reason you can’t make your kitchen functional for your family on a budget. With a couple of Lazy Susan’s, shelf & drawer organizers, slide-out shelves, and cupboard baskets, you can get the look and feel of a custom kitchen for a fraction of the price. Home Depot has some great resources when it comes to... finding organizational solutions that fit your home. Head to the link in my bio and check out their website to transform your kitchen into the space you've always wanted. @homedepotcanada

The 2020 real estate market went out with a bang after 7 consecutive months of new sales records. December sales were up 44% compared to sales in the same month of 2019. 2020 year-end sales reached 16,033 - which is up 17% from 2019. It’s clear that 2020 was a time for many to reevaluate what they need in a home, which often came down to more space and amenities as we continued to spend more and more time within our homes. Listings are still down as we start off the new year..., which means it would be a great time to get your home on the market if you're considering selling. Whether you are looking to buy or sell this year, it's never too early to get the process rolling. Contact me to learn more about the current real estate market, or check out the link in my bio for a detailed market analysis!

FUN FACT: You may have noticed that many barns and farmhouses are often painted red, but have you ever stopped to wonder why? Back in the day, farmers would seal the wood on their barns with an oil based mixture that would often include things like milk and limes - this mixture would become a long lasting paint that would harden and dry fairly quickly. Farmers started to add ferrous oxide (aka rust) to this mixture, creating a burnt-orange-red look. Rust was typically plentiful on farms and has properties that are known to be poisonous to mold and moss and would help slow the growth of these fungi on their barns. Today, while we no longer use rust to increase structure longevity, red barns have become a trend and honoured tradition. And there ya have it!

Doorknobs - one of the most-touched surfaces in a house and yet we don’t often think to wipe them down on a regular basis. After this past year, cleanliness & sanitization has been top of mind for many people, but doorknobs often slide under the radar. Unvarnished brass doorknobs actually disinfect themselves within about 8 hours - the metal ions in brass and copper are toxic to molds, viruses, and germs. Other materials such as stainless steel, wood, or glass will require a little more attention when it comes to disinfecting. Be sure to add cleaning your doorknobs to your regular chores to avoid bacteria build up!

Winter is a great time to get small home improvements done. While you may not want to paint or do renovations that require you to have your windows propped open, there are still many upgrades you can make that are simple yet effective. Change out your cabinet hardware. All you’ll need for this project is some new handles, knobs, or pulls, a screwdriver, and a little bit of time & patience. We all know that after a while, grout can start looking less than ideal. Re-grouti...ng your bathtub or shower tiles can easily improve the look of your bathroom. Wall plates and light switch covers start to look dingy and off-colour after a while. Not only is this update relatively inexpensive, it’s also super easy - you could even get the kids to help! Update your lighting and replace old light bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs. Organize your basement and storage rooms. With the use of a couple bins and some shelving units you’ll clear up all your clutter and maybe even free up some floor space! What home projects are you hoping to get done this winter?
