With artificial intelligence becoming more and more prominent in our everyday lives and work, how do we protect our vital systems that run on AI from nefarious actors? DarwinAI's VP of Research Dr. Javad Shafiee along with Chief Scientist Dr. Alexander Wong and others, have published a new paper about how fine-tuning can help in the creation of AI models that contain built-in defences against external adversarial attacks. The blog summarizing the key points is worth a rea...d! https://hubs.li/H0HtyPr0 See more

Last week we shared big news about our work with the Aspire Food Group and NGen Canada, and we've seen some great media coverage about this exciting advanced manufacturing project that we're part of, to harvest crickets as a sustainable protein source! "They might not have the most appetizing appearance, but looks can be deceiving: crickets are renowned for their subtle nutty flavor, crunchy texture, and exquisite astringency." Today we’re excited to announce an important theoretical development in deep learning around ‘attention condensers’. Mcuh liek you can udersntad this snetnece evne thuogh its phoentcially flwaed, attention condensers are unique, stand-alone architectures that allow a deep learning model to better focus on ‘what’s important’, facilitating more effective and trustworthy decisions. In a broad sense, this breakthrough is related to Moravec's paradox, an observation by AI research...ers that high-level reasoning in humans requires little computation whereas low-level sensorimotor skills require a lot. By using human-like shortcuts, we’ve demonstrated that attention condensers can dramatically accelerate AI and reduce its complexity. Since its release, COVID-Net has been leveraged by researchers in Italy, Canada, Spain, Malaysia, the U.S and India, and a number of groups have extended our initial effort in impressive ways. Yet beyond standard inquiries of how individuals could contribute to the project and leverage it responsibly, one question surfaced more than the others: how did we build such a high-performing and purpose-specific network so quickly? Here’s how we did it... https://tinyurl.com/y9unus53 #darwinai #xai #covid-19

Today, we’re extremely excited to announce an important collaboration with Lockheed Martin. Building trustworthy AI requires illuminating the black box in a powerful and practical manner. For years, our academic team has been working on Explainable AI (XAI); collaborating with a leader at the forefront of aerospace innovation in such an important domain is indeed a privilege and a responsibility. ... Nice piece in MIT Technology Review describing our COVID-net initiative. Several research teams have announced AI tools that can diagnose Covid-19 from x-rays in the last few weeks. But none have been made fully available to the public, making it hard to assess their accuracy. DarwinAI is taking a different approach.... Like many in the AI community, we’ve been grappling with how to best deploy our skills in service of the present crisis. To this end, we’re announcing the availability of COVID-Net: a convolutional neural network for COVID-19 detection via chest radiography. We’re open sourcing this model in hopes of developing a robust tool to assist health care professionals in combating the pandemic. Details at https://darwinai.news/COVIDnet ... #darwinai #covid19

An apropos share on the same day we were included on #CBInsights’s A-100 list. Explainable AI (XAI) is at the heart of our industry. What few realize is that the methods promoted by start-ups and tech giants are often based on narrow and limited academic techniques. A radically new approach is needed. Darwin invented it and empirically demonstrated its superiority at NeurIPS 2019. This two part medium piece articulates the prose behind the poetry. ... #DarwinXAI #DarwinAI

Join us in two weeks for a most fascinating panel discussion at University of Waterloo "Artificial Intelligence, Ethics and Healthcare: The Need for Diverse Perspectives" Registration link below.... "The explosive progress of Artificial Intelligence and deep learning systems have given rise to numerous applications in the health care space. Cancer diagnosis, drug discovery and biometric tracking are but some of the areas being tackled through second wave AI. Such applications, however, are fraught with challenging questions around patient privacy, data bias, and ethical decision-making: to what extent are engineers responsible for the behaviour of the life-and-death applications they design? This timely panel, sponsored by Engineering Alumni Affairs and DarwinAI, will explore the importance of diverse perspectives in addressing such challenges." #darwinai #AIandHealthCare #UWEng

Reflection and extrapolation: our CEO on AI in 2019, 2020 and beyond "While AI can do many things extremely well, understanding the richness of the universe which comes from authentically engaging "the world as the world" the way children do is still far beyond its capabilities. In other words, AI systems lack true contextual understanding or "meta-knowledge" an awareness of the world and themselves within it. For example, while a self-driving car can orient itse...lf on the road, it is completely ignorant of the concept of transportation itself: why humans do it, the efficiencies (or inefficacies) it brings to our lives, the implications to our planet and non-human species, etc." #darwinai #xai #generalai

Our chief scientist weighs in on the important topic of data bias in AI and Healthcare for PC Magazine In a few areas, such as radiology and medical imaging analysis, AI algorithms have surpassed human performance. But deep-learning algorithms suffer from a fundamental problem: They often adopt unwanted biases found within the data on which they're trained. If the data is limited to a certain group of people, it will perform less accurately for other demographics. "Datasets... collected in North America are purely reflective and lead to lower performance in different parts of Africa and Asia, and vice versa, as certain genetic conditions are more common in certain groups than others," says Alexander Wong, co-founder and chief scientist at DarwinAI. #darwinai #databias #aihealthcare
